On today’s episode of Jimmy Makes Science Simple, Jimmy takes a look at a new study that links childhood sugar consumption with cognitive decline later in life.
In today’s episode, Jimmy presents a NEVER-BEFORE-SEEN episode of his show JIMMY MAKES SCIENCE SIMPLE (http://www.instagram.com/jimmymakessciencesimple) to outline important new research he wanted you to know about. It’s a study published in the June 2021 issue of Frontiers In Neuroscience entitled “Long-Term Over-consumption of Sugar Starting at Adolescence Produces Persistent Hyperactivity and Neurocognitive Deficits in Adulthood”: https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fnins.2021.670430/full
This mouse study makes the connection between sugar consumption as a child and hyperactivity and neurocognitive issues as an adult. It’s a truly fascinating look at the reaction in various doses of sucrose on the brain, weight, memory, behavior, anxiety and depression, impulsivity, and more. The most impactful and sobering line in the study was where it stated that “sugar over-consumption satisfies all criteria for the classification of sugar as a drug of abuse.” WHOA! While animal-based research doesn’t have direct impact on humans and merely form a hypothesis for doing a randomized controlled trial (RCT), this lays the groundwork for a strong correlative human study on the detrimental brain-altering effects of sugar consumption in childhood manifesting in adulthood. DON’T MISS THIS!
