In this episode, I had the privilege to speak with Mason Trezise, an Athletic trainer who specializes in working with athletes from middle school to college. He helps athletes with injuries from sprained ankles, injured backs, and helps guide them from the moment of injury to getting back in play in a safe, effective, and fun manner. As an athletic trainer, he has a unique perspective on how pain affects function, not only because he treats people when they are fresh off their injury, but also because he sees our much younger population! In our conversation: We delve into how children respond to pain, and how they recover from injury.

If you have any questions for Mason, he is available at: mtrezise@proactivepts.com

00:00 – Introduction: Who is Mason, how he got into athletic training and his journey into pain science.

07:40 – Pain Science key takeaways: No Brain-NO pain! Pain originates in the brain, and is more of a reaction to our surroundings. This can affect our younger athletes when they are returning to sport even when they are cleared to return to sport.

09:56 – Different conceptions of pain through middle school through college.

13:00 – The importance of looking at patients as individuals.

17:01 – What an Athletic Trainer thinks about “No Pain, No Gain”; and what is “toughness”.

20:00 – Helping kids understand how to pace back into activities safely

21:50 – Red flags and what kind of things to look out for when returning to sport

25:40 – Getting kids back into play when there is a lot of fear after in injury.

35:00 – How college students are able to understand pain science.

39:00 – How parents’ pain beliefs can influence their children athletes.

45:00 – Mason’s key on how to manage pain after injury, especially when tissues have been healed.

47:00 – Movement is medicine, but we have to be smart about it.
