In this episode Candace welcomes Heather Kenney. Heather grew up in Cornish, Maine. She got married after high school and had her daughter Jasmine at the age of 21. She moved to Wisconsin with her parents, got divorced soon, and got her degree in Dental Hygiene. She remarried to her husband Neil, and they have two daughters.

Heather shares about how sexual abuse has affected her family and close friends, along with that what it’s like to be a mom of a survivor. She has some true insight on the perspective of legal proceedings, and the court process. She strongly feels that it is important to pay attention to your gut intuition to those people that are around you, and she strongly feels that she needs to be an advocate.

Episode highlights:

07:28 – Sharing my perspective is definitely on the aspect of how being a child of a survivor has affected my reaction to my own child’s molestation and rape by a family member. This story is important to share, because, coming out and telling the truth helps break the silence and the cycle that families often come through with many abuse situations that take place.

22:09 – It is important to note that a lot of the behaviors: depression, drug addiction, facing trauma, stems from a lot of behaviors that are very disruptive – those are the red flags that you should pay attention to. And you should be asking questions.

31:10 – Knowing the history of my mom, and so many of the women in my life who have not dealt with the trauma that took place, there was no way I was going to let him do this. So, the investigation began.

40:29 – I truly think that going through the trial process was a huge healing process for her. For any of those who are interested in knowing a little bit about the court process: it’s incredibly difficult. The victim is definitely the one that’s on trial. The person who commits the crime has more rights than the victim. But it’s worth it.

56:40 – I prayed a lot. I still pray a lot. God gives us gifts in many different ways. Sometimes we do not recognize those gifts, and they do not look like gifts when they happen, but there are always learning lessons, and He’s always there to pick you up.
