Parenting is challenging for all, but when raising children whose brains are “wired differently,” the journey can feel even more complex. Andrea Anderson, a coach specializing in helping parents connect with their neurodiverse children, joined me for a deep conversation about her journey and her approach to parenting that fosters peace, understanding, and growth for both parents and kids.

The Spark of Andrea’s Journey

Andrea’s journey began with her own two sons, who showed signs of neurodiversity from a young age. Faced with behaviors that ranged from anxiety to extreme calmness and outbursts, Andrea struggled to understand and connect with her children within societal norms. As she sought help from therapists, read books, and consulted doctors, Andrea realized that she needed to focus on her own approach and perspective.

“It wasn’t just about what was going on with my kids,” Andrea shared. “It was about how I was showing up. My energy and mindset impacted how they responded to the world around them.”

Understanding Neurodiversity: Acceptance Over Judgment

Andrea emphasized that neurodiversity encompasses a wide range of behaviors and ways of interacting with the world, which don’t always fit into societal “norms.” This, she explained, is something every parent can relate to, as each child is unique. She encourages parents to accept their children for who they are rather than pushing them to conform.

“It’s okay to be different,” Andrea said. “We don’t all have to fit in the same box, and our kids need the freedom to explore who they are without feeling there’s something wrong with them.”

Tools for Calmer Parenting

One of Andrea’s central teachings is the importance of regulating our own emotions as parents. She discussed tools like breathing exercises, emotional freedom techniques (EFT), and simple self-care routines that can help parents calm their nervous systems, even in chaotic moments. Andrea stressed that these tools are effective because they bring awareness to the present moment and allow parents to respond instead of react.

“When we stay calm, we show our kids that they are safe and loved, no matter what behavior they are struggling with at the time.”

Andrea also shared her journey of learning to balance structure and flexibility, using clear boundaries for her children while adapting to each child’s unique needs. She explained that consequences should be rooted in understanding, not punishment, helping children learn accountability without feeling shame.

The Power of Nutrition and Small Lifestyle Changes

Andrea believes in the power of nutrition to support mental health and calm the nervous system. By making gradual changes to diet, such as introducing calming foods and minimizing those that trigger stress, parents and children can experience more stability in their moods and reactions. Andrea’s approach emphasizes simplicity—small, manageable steps that yield lasting results.

“It doesn’t have to be a complete overhaul. Small changes over time can have a huge impact on how we feel and interact with our kids,” she said.

Building Connection: Seeing Our Children as They Are

Andrea spoke about the importance of truly connecting with our children, understanding their unique perspectives and needs. Rather than seeing their behaviors as “problems,” she suggests viewing them as expressions of deeper feelings or needs.

“Our kids often show us what they need. When we learn to listen and understand their point of view, we build trust and a deeper bond with them.”

How Parents Can Benefit from Coaching

Through her coaching, Andrea works primarily with parents to help them reconnect with their own sense of calm and understanding. Her programs range from one-on-one coaching to family-oriented sessions, allowing her to support parents in building the skills and mindsets needed for sustainable, peaceful family dynamics.

Her coaching is especially beneficial for those raising neurodiverse children, but the tools she offers apply to all parents, enhancing relationships not only with children but with partners and friends as well.

Key Takeaways for Parents

As our conversation wrapped up, Andrea left listeners with an encouraging message:

“Parenting isn’t about perfection. It’s about connection. When we focus on building trust and understanding, we create an environment where our kids can thrive.”

Andrea’s insights remind us that parenting is as much about growing ourselves as it is about nurturing our children. By embracing flexibility, practicing self-care, and creating a calm environment, we can navigate the ups and downs of parenting with confidence, knowing we’re making a difference in our children’s lives.
