"Real Nurses" Series: 5 of 5
LOVE: Isn't this word overused? Maybe even overrated?
Today's episode is going to be about how REAL NURSES love life & people. It's part of a 5-part series on what it takes to be a REAL NURSE.
In my opinion, the best nurses have these values/characteristics:

  • RESPECT THE PROFESSION
  • PUT IN THE WORK
  • STAY HUMBLE
  • PRACTICE WHAT YOU PREACH
  • LOVE LIFE & PEOPLE

We're going to talk about what love is and what it means to love LIFE & PEOPLE.
I'm sure everyone has heard the phrase "LOVE IS LOVE". Although I get the intention people have when they say that, I've always cringed. I find it kinda stupid and unhelpful because it sounds like a circular definition!
What is love? Can you define it in your own terms? Comment below! Loosely defined, LOVE is the affection felt and action fulfilled when looking out for someone or something.
Do you know how the Bible describes love? It's quite radical:
Read this... 1st Corinthians 13:4-8
The Bible even points out that there are different kinds of love.

  • Romantic/Erotic love (Eros)
  • Fraternal/Brotherly love (Phileo)
  • Unconditional love (Agape)

So how does this relate? And why should nurses love life and people?
As nurses, we deal with people's lives DAY IN, DAY OUT. Let's get the obvious out of the way: the very essence of nursing is to care for the lives of people in our care.
At the end of the day, our main focus, as nurses, is humanitarian. Historically, the foundation of healthcare has always been this way. This is the reason why most hospitals were started by Christian/Religious organizations. Sadly, the humanitarian cause has been corrupted by bad business. But the point remains: our purpose should be humanitarian.
The American Nurses Association's says it this way:
"Nursing is the protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities; prevention of illness and injury; facilitation of healing; alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response; and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, groups, communities, and populations."

But as a nurse, is it a moral obligation to LOVE? To answer this question, we must first identify our moral compass. The place where you derive your morals will determine this.
For Christian nurses, specifically, it's a tall order: LOVE GOD. LOVE LIFE. LOVE PEOPLE. No exceptions. God calls us not only to love the lovable... but to love everyone. Including those that are difficult to love. That's radical. That
