We all have insecurities, but some of us have insecurities that run so deep they impact how we let ourselves experience life.
For as long as I can remember, my thoughts about my face were the sources of my deepest pain and shame. While others were focused on losing weight and changing the shape of their bodies through diet and exercise, my shameful secret was that I had an intense aversion to my face, particularly the way I looked on camera and on video.
And while you can wear clothes to cover up your body, your face is always exposed.
The insecurity was so intense that I remember being worried when my husband got new glasses early in our relationship that he'd finally see how I truly looked and would start seeing all the flaws I saw when I looked in the mirror.
My thoughts about my appearance have impacted all areas of my life. I am in very few pictures with my family. My girls have very few pictures of their mom and dad before they were born, and even less with me after.
As I moved through life, I found ways to work around or minimize the time or need for my mug to be on camera or video, even as I started my coaching practice.
But there comes a point when you can keep running from your deepest insecurities, or you can choose to start facing them and work through them so that, over time, they no longer control your life.
That time came two weeks ago for me.
But looking back, I can see where I started laying the foundation for this growth over two years ago, when I first wrote on a loose-leaf piece of paper entitled "Areas of Future Growth" that in the future I would help myself become more comfortable in my skin and work through my thoughts around my appearance.
In this episode, I look back over the past two years and connect the dots that led to finally taking major steps this month to really gain traction in a previously painful area of my life.
Even if your deepest insecurity is not around your appearance, I invite you to take a listen and see where you can draw some parallels to help you take steps to start working through yours.
