Adthyza is a relatively new thyroid medication that was released within the last 1-2 years. I say new because that’s still pretty new in the grand scheme of things especially when it’s so rare to see a new thyroid medication. *note: I am not paid by Adthyza or any pharmaceutical company! I don’t even have a very favorable opinion of this medication and I’m just sharing what I think. How does Adthyza compare to other thyroid medications? Let’s discuss: First, you should know that Adthyza is a porcine derived thyroid medication which means it falls into the family of natural desiccated thyroid hormone. This means it should be compared to medications like Armour thyroid and NP thyroid. Adthyza contains a combination of T4 and T3 thyroid hormone and markets itself as a sort of cleaner option compared to what’s available. According to their own website, Adthyza claims to be lactose, gluten, corn, dye, and latex free. While you can consider this to be low allergen, I don’t think you can consider it to be very clean as both NP thyroid and armour thyroid have fewer total fillers. Adthyza contains 6 inactive fillers and both NP thyroid and armour thyroid contain 4. Having said that, I still think having another option is great for thyroid patients because it means that if you’ve tried and failed both armour and NP thyroid, you still have some other options. I also like the fact that Adthyza is trying to build more transparency by allowing you to look up the concentration of each dose based on lot. This is no doubt in response to the recent issues that thyroid medications have had to super potent and sub potent lots. All in all, Adthyza is a step in the right direction but ultimately fails to meet the needs of thyroid patients. Most thyroid patients probably don’t need to switch over to it unless they aren’t doing well on their current regimen.
