Ep 249 - Russian doping whistleblowers Yuliya and Vitaly Stepanov (Part 1)
Manage episode 282902702 series 86782
Yuliya Stepanova and Vitaly Stepanov are the two whistleblowers who exposed Russia’s state-sponsored doping programme, leading to the ban of Russian athletes in international competition.
Yuliya is a middle-distance runner who competed for Russia at the 2012 London Olympics and 2016 Rio Olympics. She became an informant for WADA. Vitaly worked for the Russian Anti-Doping Agency. Together they exposed the full extent of the state-sponsored doping programme that eventually led to Russia's exclusion at the Olympics and their fleeing to the US to avoid repercussions.
With the Russian ban recently lifted by CAS, the issue of doping is again back in the picture. That's why Jody and David spoke with Yuliya and Vitaly about how they went from being a part of the system to attempting to bring it down, the effect it has had on their life and what their plans are for the future.
This is Part 1 of a two-part episode. Make sure you listen to Ep 250 for part 2.
