I did it! A lot of Firsts for me earlier this month. This solo episode of "Run the Race" is the recap of me running 3 marathons (26.2 miles) in 3 days in 3 different states in New England. That's 80 miles over the span of 15.5 miles of races. God made us to do hard things! You'll hear the ins and outs of my trips to run in Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine - three states I'd never been to before this either. In this shorter pod, you'll hear about inspiring new long distance runners I got to meet and run with...shirts and food with a purpose...finish times that got progressively slower...music (80s and worship) to pump me up and even sing out loud to during the marathons...scenery and obstacles on the race courses...running for others...how my body held up those 3 days...ice baths and fueling in between each marathon. I close out with my tours of these states including the longest covered bridge in the nation that takes you into NH...a farm with fresh Vermont maple syrup...a unique mill-turned in that I stayed and ate at...hitting the beach and a Presidents' home on the Maine coast...historic lighthouses...and lobster rolls! And i pray. Thanks for listening to the #RunTheRace podcast, which I hope you'll subscribe to! Share it with your friends. Also, write a quick review about it, on Apple podcasts. For our 250th episode, we have a special duo sharing a lot about their up-and-down journey to redemption. These guys have both had leadership roles in churches for decades. They find God lessons in everyday life...have faced adversity with both recovering from addictions, one of them also battling cancer and the other losing his marriage, but they lean on faith and each other and their family and music to live life to the fullest. Make sure to subscribe to "Run the Race" and theirs too. (4:32) Chaplain Richard Moore and Brad Williams recently started their own podcast "Sermons on the Side" which I highly recommend and they had me on as a recent guest: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/sermons-on-the-side/id1795709466. They talk about the real meaning behind the name of their weekly show...and how church is important but their are huge experiences that happen beyond the 4 walls. (14:22) Brad is a father of 3 now, including a newborn. Hear why he thinks parenthood can reveal our selfishness and how to play "zone defense." Grandfather Richard and his wife have a combined 5 adult children and gives us some wisdom on how being a son of our Heavenly Father can inform all out relationships. (25:52) Brad learned he had testicular cancer at the same time they got their most recent positive pregnancy test. Along with his health journey, he explains why their baby's name Lily Grace is Biblically significant. Richard also gets vulnerable about, after 30 years in ministry roles, his "secret life" was revealed - an addiction (porn and struggle with lust) and "D-day" that led to trauma for his family and a broken marriage. But God. Don't miss how he's discovered, through a 16-year recovery so far, the surrender to the Lord trumps fear and shame because it leads to the ultimate freedom and a new identity in Christ. (44:05) Brad and Lisa - name of their music group, and they lead worship at a church in Harris County - have had their own marriage struggles and addiction challenges, that they sing about. I play portions of "Only You Can" on this episode: https://open.spotify.com/album/1f5aOlMYf7rdSMOjKjeAW5. Both these men are part of a weekly recovery group, knowing how vital community is to create change vs. trying to solve problems in isolation! (57:30) Both music and mentoring are powerful tools that Richard and Brad love talking about. (1:13:05) Love having these guys on. I close out in prayer. Some may call him marathon man or the "Moses of running" lately. This 58-yr-old proud Christian from Colorado has completed an astounding 456 marathons or ultras in his life. He's on target for his goal of running 100+ marathons or 50Ks in 2025 including the completion of all 50 states several more times! (2:50) Having met Keegan Haga more than a year ago and run a few races alongside him, I first asked WHY he runs so much, so many marathon. "Because we can." He elaborates, taking me back to his sister motivating him to run that 1st marathon in his mid 40s...and experiencing amazing things on his journey of running all over the USA: https://www.mycoloradolife.net/about/. (17:05) We dig deeper into the logistics of all these races and the biggest challenges of traveling so much, figuring out where to fly and sleep. In his "year of 50Ks" (as he calls it), Keenan talks about his pace for these races...finally getting a coach to help avoid injuries and do very beneficial strength training...his love of God and people helping run so much...favorite foods before and after marathons...and dealing with all sorts of weather. His previous fear of starting lines was paralyzing at times but the "mainly marathons" family makes it more fun. He's doing all 75 races with them in 2025! (39:27) Years ago, he left a great network media job in Manhattan for a simpler life in Colorado. 80% happy wasn't enough for Keenan. who has some advice for making that scary and big leap of faith from a maybe "stuck" life to taking big swings at life. (48:33) A big part of his life now is staying Prayed up, seeking out people to share kindness God's love with at races. That faith walk also changed after surviving two bouts of stomach cancer. (55:03) I asked him his favorite races overseas - quick stories about Milan, majors like Berlin, "Fire and Ice" Iceland. He also shares wisdom about picking marathons in the U.S. - which can be huge like NYC or small and informal like the "mainly" ones: https://mainlymarathons.com/. Having failed at similar big goals last year, he's stronger and confident this time around, praying through adversity and knowing how God can use imperfect people for mighty things. I close the episode out with some kudos for Keenan, a prayer, and my achievement of a 3 year run streak. Thanks for listening to the #RunTheRace podcast, which I hope you'll subscribe to! Closing out National Bike Month with a young man from Auburn who just completed "Bo Bikes Bama" for the 4th time. We have more on that event (started by the famous Bo Jackson) and (5:15) avid cyclist Jared Bowles shares about the importance of doing challenges for causes, this one for storm relief victims in Alabama. It was instilled in him early in life about lessons of discipline - for all of us. Make sure to subscribe to "Run The Race" to hear stories like his of fitness and faith. (13:40) This single father his fitness journey from swimming at 11 years old to now triathlons. What has his training looked like for his Half Ironmans? He breaks down the numbers for swimming, biking, running...plus being a healthy example for his 4-year-old son. (22:01) Rebelling at a younger age, Jared's son being born was a wakeup call that got him back into church and exercise! The ups and downs of his health journey included a failed full Ironman, a snow skiing injury, and learning to lean on the Lord more. What does he reflect on about God while running and cycling? (29:21) The challenges of having his own single family residential construction company and being a single dad means finding balance...and waking up earlier than he wants to bike or run. (33:16) Jared shares a little more of his cycling story, the costs involved with this hobby, what the average bike ride looks like for him...his recent Marine Corps Marathon experience, and aiming for a full Ironman in the future. In the heart of this graduation season, one young man took a nontraditional route to his degree and into a life of ministry. Matthew Sanchez is a content creator, entrepreneur, speaker and podcast host who aims to help people step into their God-given purpose. We talk about the Lord changing his mindset of doubt and feeling unworthy...how obedience can bring clarity in knowing God's hand is in what you're doing...overcoming his porn addiction...and how obstacles led to his calling, including an absent father. (3:25) This dreamer and former special ed student - who struggled in school - talks about graduating from Highlands College (connected to Church of the Highlands), with the goal of continuing to tell stories to help people find your gift and say yes or surrender to our mighty God, who uses broken people. Find out more about him at https://linktr.ee/Iammatthewsanchez?utm_source=linktree_profile_share<sid=45a155b5-df51-4921-9fbb-976bafc3c024. (13:20) Matthew Sanchez also is vulnerable about not having a father around, how that pain became a blessing, helping him have empathy for others. (17:50) He also opens up about his destructive addiction to porn and how his Christian walk made him want to change. Getting rid of the old also gives more room for the new. (26:50) Facing feelings of shame, doubt, insecurity...Matthew needed a change of mindset. Along with very supportive women, like his grandmother, this young man say the God had a plan for him. A big part is showing up - he explains how that can mean a lot of things. An entertainer at heart, he found part of that to be his gift that God will use. (40:28) Matthew also has some wisdom about being obedient (can be scary) and how that can make it clear we are on God's path. Also hear his take on "God whispers"...knowing who you are...and wearing your brokenness on your sleeve. (54:28) He closes us out in prayer. He recently became a world champion pizza maker, winning the International Pizza Challenge in Las Vegas, out of 100+ of the best pizzaiolos. And he gives God the glory for it! We chatted while eating a pizza he made for us at the business he's owned for almost a decade, Cerrone's Brick Oven Pizzeria in Columbus GA. Make sure to subscribe to this podcast to hear fun and inspiring conversations about faith, fitness...and food too. (2:49) Leo DiCesaris discusses his love for pizza, his family roots in Italy, studying how to make pies all over the USA, passion for cooking authentic italian food, plus how you can make dough lighter and more digestible. (10:38) Leo sees Cerrone's as "God's business." We ask him about that higher calling and giving joy to people through food and fellowship. He also gives some of his keys to a good work-life balance. (16:09) We then dive into the 2025 International Pizza Challenge: the rules, criteria he and the other pizza chefs were judged on, what was on his WINNING PIZZA (plenty of unique ingredients including a rare pig from Spain) that started with a dough that he created over the course of 2 weeks. (31:41) Listening to worship music while cooking in this competition, pizza champ Leo is glad he now has a worldwide platform to talk about honoring the Lord, and seeking His will. He has some Godly advice for future chefs and restaurant workers dreaming of success in the face of fear and a high probability of failure for pizzerias. (35:45) And nearly 3 years ago, this pizza business owner got into a horrible head-on collision, leaving him with a list of broken bones. He opens up about that, the full year of recovery, and his super supportive wife. (40:45) Leo is also a big guy, who played offensive tackle in high school and college and arena football - where he got lessons for life that have stuck! He talks about food (like pizza) being fuel for sports too, essential nutrients before and after workouts. And after talking about what I eat before and after long runs and races, I close the episode in prayer. Thanks for listening to the #RunTheRace podcast! About 1/4 way into the Major League Baseball season, and you may not be a pro, but experts say you can train like one! We talk on this shorter episode about strengthening your core, flexibility, and faith when times get tough - when you're up to bat in life. Baseball movies teach us lessons. So does discipline when it comes to the principles of fitness and faith. One specific workout called the "hurling exercise" can help with the core aka foundation of your muscles. How about yoga? And the benefits of eating healthier? The sport is sometimes compared to a religion. Baseball's lessons include the power of teamwork and getting grace from God when we're facing those curveball, fastballs in critical moments of our lives. He can work miracles, coming up to bat for us. Thanks for listening to the #RunTheRace podcast, which I hope you'll subscribe to! Share it with your friends. Nowadays, with people living more sedentary lives, many of us begin losing 1% flexibility each year, starting in our 30s. But did you know proper stretching can help slow down the aging process? And that intravenous hydration can help you deal with energy and a long list of ailments? Our guest recently opened up two separate businesses that provide those services for anyone, including athletes. Subscribe to "Run The Race" to hear weekly insight to help you improve your fitness and faith. (6:44) Experienced sales associate - in the field of physical therapy, health and wellness - Josh O'Neal is the co-owner of a Hydralive and his newest venture a Stretch Zone, both those in North Columbus GA. He talks about the unique advantages of those businesses...the importance of having better range of motion, even as our bodies get older...the what/why of practitioner-assisted stretching...and being proactive with flexibility. (19:55) As for jolts of hydration, Josh talks about what that does for your body...additives for that IV...other services at Hydralive like the really cold Cryotherapy. (28:41) He also talks about how a month+ furlough from his job during COVID led to being an entrepreneur who now co-owns these businesses, God opening doors with the help of a partner/nurse. (41:46) Josh's goal is helping others through enjoying experiences to improve their health. His faith in God drives that passion to focus on the Golden Rule for clients - do onto others as you'd want them to do to you. That also goes for his family and his church, which is why he fights through anxiety on the worship team. (52:10) We close our chats with his favorite parts of co-owning businesses. A lot of it comes down to having "ownership." Thanks for listening to the #RunTheRace podcast! Also, write a quick review about it, on Apple podcasts. As we head into Good Friday and Easter weekend, a local Pastor joined us to talk about Jesus dying on the Cross and rising again...growing up as a pastor's kid and his own call into ministry...what it was like starting a brand new church...how we can lay down our lives daily, as Jesus died for us...opportunities for churches on Easter...and their year-long prayer chain. (3:25) The crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus was Plan A, but we can't live up to His standard. Pastor Grant Collins of Fountain City Church in Columbus GA explains that and how it applies to our lives. (13:48) His dad was a longtime pastor, and they were at church a lot. What kind of help does he give Pastor Grant, over the last few decades ago of ministry (also sharing those moments he felt called). And being obedient to God helps you discovery your unique calling. (27:45) Starting or planting their church 7 years ago, it was scary and their family almost went to Turkey instead. Pastor Grant had a wakeup moment that helped change his definition of faith and lead a mission-focused church without empty religious traditions. He says here are things we can do to take up our cross daily: disown ourselves, be convicted by His Word, put ourselves in God's presence, be rooted in community, have accountability partner(s), get involved in church. (52:30) Is his church doing Easter different than other Sunday services? Regardless, he knows it's one of the most attended and calls this an opportunity to share the Gospel, connect people with community. Fountain City Church is also leading a 2025 "Unbroken Prayer Chain for the Chattahoochee Valley" which other churches, businesses, small groups, etc. can sign up to pray certain days or weeks to help with what this pastor calls a spiritual "awakening" in this area: https://fountaincity.churchcenter.com/registrations/events/2643050. And Pastor Grant closes us in prayer. Thanks for listening to the #RunTheRace podcast, which I hope you'll subscribe to! Share it with your friends. Here's a recap of my latest marathon in state #32 of Maryland, near Annapolis. How did I finally break the elusive 4 hours for my finish time in a 26.2 mile race? You can do hard things too if you work hard and put your mind to it. Subscribe to "Run The Race" for more wisdom on fitness and faith. I talk all about working for the first time with a coach, who helped give me confidence, and how a bunch of members of the Navy did at the B&A Trail Marathon. Meeting the goal also involved diverse and consistent training, a good pace strategy, digging deep, good food, using mantras (like "I can do all things through Christ") and music the right ways, believing and not stopping. On this shorter episode, you'll also hear about my pre-marathon and post-race tours in Annapolis (US Navy Academy) and Washington DC (inside the Capitol). And travel can be a fun, but also messy, as I learned again. Regardless, God is good! Thanks for listening to the #RunTheRace podcast! Also, write a quick review about it, on Apple podcasts. She operates a cafe in West Georgia with a motto of "serving coffee with kindness." We could all use that in our world today. Rewind back to what made her focus on loving people out of dark times, this business owner talks about growing up dirt poor with a mom who made life magical with outdoors adventures...leaving everything to hike the Appalachian Trail...making plans to kill herself but why she didn't do it...and the healing power of kayaking. Now, she's opening up a first-of-its-kind venture in the Chattahoochee Valley. (3:18) The owner of The Brick and Mortar Cafe in Columbus GA first talks about why she left her 3 jobs and sold all her stuff, a decade ago, to set out to hike the AT from Georgia to Maine - and then why she had to stop after nearly 700 miles. The roots of it were depression and proving something to herself and the power to keep moving. And in Maine, she got a job managing a coffee shop that inspired her to open up her own! (10:00) The mission of her coffee shop in "Old Town" is to love people where they are, put a smile on customers' faces. That comes from the dark place of Heather being suicidal, years ago, and one final phone call stopped her. Brick & Mortar may not be faith-based, but they want to touch people's lives. A small part of that is writing uplifting messages on their coffee cups. Heather also hopes she can inspire/mentor other female entrepreneurs who, like her, may have though these dreams are not achievable. Growing up as a people pleaser, she's also learning to take care of herself. She also talks about how her life changed from losing her mom recently, after being her caregiver, and how the cafe community she build supported her so much. (24:45) The next business for her is a collaboration with the owner of local italian restaurant Treviolis called "The Collegiate Outpost" inside Columbus Technical College, a new concept for this part of GA. it's not just a place for coffee, sandwiches, pastries, pasta but also designed with a culinary internship program where students can learn skills and get future jobs at area restaurants, cafes. (27:37) Not owning a TV for the last few decades, Heather loves the outdoors - getting on the water and in the woods for decompression, stress relief, meditation. And Heather gets emotional talking about how her mom showed them how powerful and exciting it is to be out in nature. She also shares some wisdom she's learned from the valleys and mountaintops...her evolving from a judgmental young Christian to a person focused on love instead of legalism...plus some of her favorite coffee drinks. And I close out the episode talking about the pros and cons of coffee for your health and workouts, then a final prayer. During this Women's History Month and anytime, her job as Associate Brand Manager for Aflac (headquartered in Columbus GA) gives her the opportunity to put women in the spotlight, like when she went to the NCAA women's Final Four last year, among some big names. We also talk on this episode about transitioning from being only to runner to strength training...dealing with the pressures of being a strong woman on the job and in the gym...and how faith brought her out of a path of panic. After a update on the growth of women's sports, (6:20) Madison Montgomery joins in to talk about her Final Four experience, why it's important to shine the light on female athletes, and her advice for young women. (17:00) Becoming "too thin" a year ago, Madison has since lifted weights more and hired a nutrition coach. You may be surprised what she's learned about workouts and especially food (and more of it). She also describes the "athlete camp" she recently attended. (27:18) In her mid 20s and busy juggling school and jobs and being fit...she started having panic attacks which led to depression and thoughts of suicide. She shares her story to help other women who may think they need to portray having it all together. (37:08) And Madison credits getting through dark times to the Lord's grace. She talks about starting her day early through quiet time with God. And she wants to experience as much as she can in life - which recently has helped her see women's sports in a different light. I close us out in prayer. Thanks for listening to the #RunTheRace podcast! Also, write a quick review about it, on Apple podcasts. For more info and all past episodes, go to www.wtvm.com/podcast/.…

Known as Chap, this Puerto Rican Chaplain in Georgia is focused on church unity and diversity, and showing our faith with works, hence the name of the church he's the founder and pastor for: Love in Action Outreach Ministries. He's also the organizer of a special event this weekend called "March for Jesus Columbus." You can learn more about both at https://www.facebook.com/loveinactionoutreachga. (2:33) Chaplain Emilio Rosa first talks about his call into ministry, that started with translating his dad's sermons into English for a church at age 8. (8:26) He recalls facing racism while growing up as a minority in the 1970s in Brooklyn NY. Rosa opens up about pet peeves about churches separated by race, but what can be done about the divided body of Christ? He says we have to be intentional about being with those that don't look like us, amidst a push lately for multicultural churches. (13:45) The event March for Jesus will happen in downtown Columbus GA - for a 4th year - on Saturday March 15, with gathering at 9am at St. Luke church then heading out on 3 mile march at 10am, with a break in the middle for a brief message and worship. Part of this is praying for local cities and leaders. Columbus' mayor is scheduled to be involved again. Rosa talks about why being part of this is so important, getting out of your comfort zone, showing a diverse group that has a message of hope for those seeing this march. (27:05) The chaplain also breaks down the ACTION part of his church "Love In Action Outreach." Most of Jesus' work was outside the church. He talks about how he/we can identify needs. Part of the way Rosa does it is through being on the Columbus Hispanic Outreach Committee - sharing resources, networking, then doing. For more info, you can send an email to loveinactionoutreachga@gmail.com or call Rosa at 770-837-1421. He closes us out in prayer. He's now one of only 400 people that have completed a Transcon. Navy LT Paul Johnson joins me on the "Run The Race" podcast (subscribe now) to talk about his 3,000 mile run and walk from Los Angeles to New York City, plus his new world record for a fitness challenge in Antarctica...all of this helping him and others with mental health issues, some that come from military deployments. (5:11) Johnson talks about how running is a coping mechanism for his anxiety and depression. He loves it so much he ran across the USA in 52+ days, raising more than half a million dollars in the process for nonprofit Team RWB that helps military veterans with healthy lifestyles. Listen to the pod to hear more about that org plus his stories about transcon training...challenges like sandstorm and heat...sleep and crew...lots of food, that may sound strange and delicious...mental strength throughout the epic journey...seeing the USA this way...and the documentary film all about it that will be streaming this Spring. (21:34) How do different military branches handle fitness, like his - the Navy? Regardless, Johnson talks about exercise being essential for stress management...for any of us. On long deployments, stuck on a ship at sea, it's tough. (27:24) Another environment that's one of the harshest in the world is Antarctica, where he and a Navy vet friend ran 100 miles in the fastest time ever, just under 24 hours through snow and major winds! He describes that immense challenge. (33:31) And Paul Johnson also enjoys helping other people meet their goals, sharing fun videos on social media with tips about a lot of things to do before/during/after runs and workouts. You'll also want to hear about his next goals that are unique and may sound crazy. We close our chat with why it's so important to support causes like Team RWB. You can still donate to them, on behalf of Paul's transcon and upcoming movie: https://donate.teamrwb.org/fundraiser/5143120. Thanks for listening to the #RunTheRace podcast! Dana Barker works a few jobs and wears a lot of hats - now add dancing to that! This Auburn University senior technical analyst and fill-in TV meteorologist (for stations like WTVM in his hometown of Columbus GA) also stays busy as a football ref and hockey PA announcer for the Columbus River Dragons, who he's representing in the upcoming "Dancing Stars of Columbus," the biggest local fundraiser for the Alzheimer's Association. We talk on this episode about his many roles and how fitness/exercise is a part of those. (2:41) Dana says he's out of his "comfort zip code" learning a dance for this Thursday night's gala. He's been sweating quite a bit while learning/practicing his 90 second routine with pro Tracie Chamblee, who was my partner when I was a "dancing star" 2 years ago. The most important part is raising money for Alzheimer's research and caregivers. You can support Dana or others by giving at this link: https://act.alz.org/site/TR/Gala/GA-Georgia?px=24103747&pg=personal&fr_id=18356. (10:16) This former nerd of mathlete (his term) did not play sports growing up, but is involved with them now like being an experienced ref for high school football - which his broadcast career has helped him with a key part of that job...communication. This president of the local AHSAA association, covering schools in East Alabama, also gets in tens of thousands of steps during each football game as a white hat. It sometimes has to dance on the football field to keep from being run over. (22:04) Dana has also become a student of the game of hockey that he loves now. The longtime PA announcer and DJ for the Columbus River Dragons (formerly the Cottonmouths) talks about why this sport on the ice has hung around this part of Georgia for three decades now. (27:17) This scientist may have the strongest passion though for weather and forecasting! He tells a story about storm chasing and getting close to a funnel 4+ years ago in Eufaula AL. Dana also talks about how the 2019 deadly tornado in Beauregard AL (23 people dead) changed his mindset from working severe weather as an adrenaline rush to a real focus on being a service and saving lives. (37:40) Now, dancing Dana is nervous and excited to hit the dance floor, giving back in the city of Columbus GA where he has deep roots. I close out the pod episode in prayer. His day job is endodontist (dentist) in the Griffin GA area, but some people may see his hobby as extremely challenging: running a marathon race or more per month for the last 8 years! That includes some 100 milers. On "Run The Race," Paul Shepherd talks about that consistency as he chases marathons/ultras in all 50 states...favorite races like Boston and UTMB in France and beyond...benefits of trail running...this sport as a way to be humble and grow closer to God...building his own running trails...and other cool race stories, from Jerusalem to ones themed for history or military. (2:07) This episode kicks off with my personal recap of my latest 26.2 mile race, the Rehobeth Beach Seashore Marathon in DE, which Paul ran as well! (11:06) Paul talks about the keys to consistency vs. fleeting motivation. What helps is having 2 signed-up-for races on the calendar at all times. He's 47 states into his marathon journey now. (19:20) Paul has run some of the big ones like the Boston Marathon, the Kona triathlon, and Ultra Trail Mont Blanc (UTMB) - he goes into details about the trails there from France into Italy/Switzerland, the 106 mile loop with 36K feet of vertical, in an area where his grandfather escaped after being shot down in Germany during WWII. After a little on the pros and cons of running on trials - which he likes better - (28:03) we dive into his mindset of being a "forever beginner," trying new things and staying humble with new skills. Running, in his eyes, is also spiritual - because when we stress our bodies (like in ultra races), the spirit carries us and we connect with God who "designed us to run." (37:00) Paul also built a half marathon trail on the land where he lives, inspired in part by "Field of Dreams." It means sharing fun and suffering at home with fellow runners. (42:20) After giving his take on our DE marathon together, he talks about making core memories as he runs races all across America, helping him learn and love our country even more. This June, he plans to run a marathon in his 50th state, joining the only 2,000 people in the world that have done that. We wrap up our chat with some of his quick stories about the Jerusalem Marathon, painfully going down stairs after his early-on Soldier Marathon, and his still marathon-running 82-year-old dad being his run hero. (1:03:45) My closing prayer. Thanks for listening to the #RunTheRace podcast! Also, write a quick review about it, on Apple podcasts. 6 years after losing her teen daughter to suicide, an East Alabama mother is only ramping up her crusade to help save the lives of other students through their "Love Like Lexi" project, which is hosting a new event later this week. Check out her emotional, heartbreaking, inspiring story on this episode of "Run The Race," which you can subscribe to or follow for weekly wisdom and testimonies of faith and fitness. (3:20) Andrea Mills' high school senior daughter took her own life on February 6, 2019. What prompted it may shock you. It was a wakeup call for this family...and a warning for so many others, before it's too late. It has to do with purpose, self-worth and empowerment for teenagers. (14:20) Andrea felt major guilt, but God kept her going...and seeing so many others with intrusive thoughts motivated her to go from grieving mom to advocate! Along with sharing their personal story, she has advice for other moms and dads about what to ask your teens and talk to them about. For the last 4 years, she has led a nonprofit named after their daughter where they talk about navigating mistakes/failures (that will happen) at many school assemblies, which have had 80,000 attendees so far, preparing young people and their parents for this fight! Suicide comes with stigma too, to even talk about, but Andrea says we have to use our voices for change. (27:45) Faith is also a centerpiece in the story of Lexi and her family. So is spiritual warfare and people pouring into each other with encouragement (for outsiders and "comfort carriers" too). Andrea also explains the message behind the name "Love Like Lexi." (42:05) And this Thursday February 6, they'll be hosting the tri-city Live Project Crusade at Woodruff Park in Columbus with free food, new inspiring music, the Miracle Riders and other groups - all to help people out of the darkness. More info: https://lovelikelexi.networkforgood.com/events/76105-live-project-crusade. (48:18) Andrew closes the episode out in Prayer for us. Thanks for listening to the #RunTheRace podcast! Are you ready for a change or to live your best life? Maybe God is signaling to you it's time for a shift. A new life coach is ready to help you prepare and organize with a strategy. Quadasia (Dasi) Love wears a lot of other hats too: international chaplain, model and actress, and a prophet at her church (through the fivefold ministry) that's focused on unity and going soon to Zambia. (3:15) Dasi Love kicks us off on this podcast episode with insight on how faith impacts big life changes for us, like God's call and tools to do special things vs. bad habits and the world's distractions. There are plans that need to be made over the course of months, part of her life coaching called "My Kairos Time" (greek for due season): https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61571592010474. (8:40) Time management is huge for a lot of us. Time to eliminate excuses. And when do you know to make that sometimes-scary change in your life? Dasi says "God can't be through you what He isn't to you." She went from being a pre-med Biology major in college and a future Dr. Love....to a real relationship with Jesus, attending seminary and becoming a Chaplain for Dunamis International Chaplains. This young woman is (19:03) also an actress and model who won't comprise on certain photo/video shoots. She was the stand-in and running double for the main actress in the Kendrick Brothers' popular film "Overcomer." (25:35) Dasi also loves to discuss what true unity looks like, in and out of the church. She's learned a lot from her job as a chaplain - going where they're needed! (32:50) One more hat she wears is as a prophet top make sure others are in alignment with the Word of God, not as a "fortune teller." This is part of the Christian concept of fivefold ministry - 5 roles to serve the church in different ways. Satan can also pervert those roles or what's in the Bible. What can also get in the way of those gifts are pride, churches' fear of criticism, denomination differences, pastors not held accountable). (44:33) Along with fundraising for a Fall 2025 trip to Zambia, Dasi Love also has partnered with pastors to help persecuted believes in the Islamic state of Pakistan. She explains...then closes our episode out in prayer. Thanks for listening to the #RunTheRace podcast, which I hope you'll subscribe to! Share it with your friends. The young woman on the podcast today is a lawyer and road runner turned therapist + ultra athlete + race director who shares some insightful, deep thoughts on finding the right career path...the path of running as a healer instead of a competition...why and how she's done numerous 100 mile races now...her tools to help professionals and athletes that are very driven...and how sports (especially endurance) can help with your mental health. Subscribe to "Run The Race" to hear more inspiring guests talking about fitness and faith. After talking about the rare snow we just had in Georgia - and getting to run in it - (6:34) I introduce to y'all Emily Labutta, a licensed Associate Professional Counselor with Atlanta Wellness Collective, a big change from her years as a criminal prosecutor. Why the change? And her reasons for running have changed too! you can probably relate to what she's been through. Now, it's about adventure (on trails) instead of performance. Great quote from her: "What happens in the soul is better than what happens on the watch." (17:24) Athletes can be driven...and as a therapist now, she can help with positive aspirations/energy instead of negative self-talk. Listen, she cries during long races, then gets to running again. She's completed nine 100 mile races in the last 3 years, including a recent one around a track in less than 24 hours! Emily has some wisdom about training your legs, stomach and more for those long distances...and how to ACCEPT the PAIN. (33:24) Sports challenges also help a lot with self-discovery and our own resilience, what we can and cannot do (both important). She explains the connections that can happen between endurance athletics and trauma. (43:51) She also helps lead events as a co-race director, adding that job now with Revolution Running in Georgia. Her newly created race The SPARROW (I'm running the 3 hour but there's a 6 hr option) on February 8 in Flowery Branch GA is named for a Latin phrase that means "While I breathe, I hope." And she describes how HOPE (and help from others) may look different than you think. You can still sign up for that great event: https://ultrasignup.com/register.aspx?did=116113. Two weeks into 2025, how are your goals (resolutions) for the New Year looking? A lot of people may still be going to the gym weekly or even daily. Sticking to those healthy habits can be a challenge, but it's worth it. (2:30) Brian Patrick has been with Crunch Fitness for the last decade, now General Manager of the gym in Columbus GA. He has some advice on being consistent with your exercise routines. And the why lately is more about "healthy" than losing weight. Hear what he says about small challenges and friends motivating you. (8:24) Brian started his fitness journey on an Olympic power lifting team while attending high school in Savannah. He talked about essentially lifting a person over your head in 3 seconds flat. He also says showing up to the gym is more important than form, (15:57) but you can always ask questions or get help from others at the gym. What do you like to do as far as fitness? That'll keep you coming back. Why or when should you hire a personal trainer? Brian explains a few ways they can help you. Group fitness is what some people enjoy most. (24:40) Working out can also help your stress and mental health. Brian even gets a little emotional in talking about how rewarding his job is...helping soldiers, married couples, people of all shapes and ages. And what are the new trends at gyms? They include HIIT (high intensity interval training). (34:10) And we close out our chat talking about good nutrition for your health and how to maintain small changes like serving sizes and when you eat. Still gotta eat or fuel enough too! Jimmy Carter died less than a week ago at age 100. He was our 39th President but also an outspoken hero of faith. On this day before the processional begins for his funeral - from Plains GA to Atlanta to DC and back to his Georgia home - here are my thoughts and some history on Carter's life of faith. Make sure to subscribe, follow, like this "Run the Race" podcast for more inspiring stories about fitness too. Former President Jimmy Carter practices what he preached, putting his Christian beliefs into action - in the White House and before/after that...through worldwide humanitarian efforts, working on many Habitat for Humanity projects, and regularly teaching Sunday School at his GA church - drawing thousands. In this shorter episode, also hear more about how his 77 year marriage to Rosalynn Carter was an example of living out faith, along with reading the Bible and very consistent prayer. This episode, coming out on Christmas Eve, is with two of my best friends. They are pastors who lead a church in Illinois, formerly led youth ministry in Georgia. We had a superb conversation about the true meaning of Christmas...what a close relationship with Jesus looks like...misconceptions of our faith because of "headline theology"...the importance of friendship on Earth...reading the entire Bible in 30 days...the challenges of ministry...and a lil football too. (3:03) Joe Banks and Jarrod Six are the lead and executive pastors of Abundant Church in Alton IL. The 3 of us met a decade+ ago in Columbus GA. We start our pod chat with why CHRISTmas is the culmination of our faith and how it's an opportunity to show others our authenticity. How can an intimate relationship with Jesus (his birth being celebrated) be compared to intimacy in our marriage? (13:51) For those who want to hear God speak to you, His Word is a great start. Pastor Joe talks about some in their church kicking off 2025 with a Bible Shred, reading the entire book in 30 days! And they both gives keys to success to discipline in reading the Bible on a regular basis. In the face of life's ups and downs, (24:05) friendship is also crucial or "redwood faith." They explain. And instead of Christianity being about a stuffy set of rules to follow, His Word describes a life of joy. But what's it really like working with a best friend, side-by-side in the tough world of ministry? They both love football, but sports or other things we put above God...can become a real problem. (49:30) Holidays are for celebrations, but it can also be depressing and difficult, so these guys talk about how to bring people into community. Jarrod opens up about how it can be heavy for pastors carrying other people's burdens but it's a calling. And finding balance in ministry is a myth. (1:04:50) Joe closes us out with a prayer of blessing. Merry Christmas everyone!! Thanks for listening to the #RunTheRace podcast, which I hope you'll subscribe to! Share it with your friends. Cheerleading is a sport 150%, so says my guest this week on the "Run the Race" podcast, which you should subscribe to. She's dancing her way to fitness at age 40 now too. (3:05) Mandy Hood has coached hundreds of students in cheerleading and has been a part of more than 20 national titles, at all levels. (5:45) We talk to this coach and mom about the fitness aspects and misconceptions of cheer, from a tight core and strength to clutch execution and endurance. (17:25) She also had plenty to share about the challenges and rewards of coaching, (23:44) starting out as a competitive dancer at age 4...mental health, (35:50) getting back into dance as a Pro partner and choreographer for Dancing Stars of Columbus GA...her heart for their cause of fighting Alzheimers Disease, (42:58) and being creative with choreography on a journey that's more important than the wins. I close out the episode with some more fitness practice from a famous cheerleader...then prayer. Here are links to learn more about our local Dancing Stars competition benefiting such an important cause that we hope you'll donate to: https://act.alz.org/site/TR?fr_id=18356&pg=entry. We have a lot going on in our world and personal lives these days. Preaching lately about stress-free leadership and stress-free marriages, my guest this week is a Pastor in East AL and West GA who's giving some raw insight on hearing the voice of God (instead of trying to build faith) to help discover His will for your life...helping spiritual leaders in America plus on his numerous missions to Africa...strengthening the church's connection to communities...and why he started the "Unite The Valley" nonprofit that's about to have it's first big leadership event, a month from now. You can learn more and sign up at https://utvchatt.com/. (2:28) Pastor Curtis Doleman Jr. of Praise Ministry Tabernacle (Phenix City AL) explains how a deep connection to God and knowing His voice...leads directly to hearing the Lord's instructions for our life. To improve in leadership or anything else, do you try using your own tools or trust God and the tools he gives us? That can make it stressful or not. There are pre-conceived notions for leaders. He also explains the "staring contest" with God. (15:55) 33 years ago, Pastor Curtis had an unconventional salvation experience, alone in his bedroom. You don't want to miss this story, what he said to God and the quick responses in Scripture. (21:01) After going into ministry, he went on overseas Missions including to Africa, where Curtis also focuses on preaching to the leaders of churches, who also are stressed out and striving at times. He talks about the difference in prayer and worship in African nations. (29:45) A pastor for three decades himself, Curtis has long been called to help strengthen the church, which at times he says is like a "circus." Should we be quiet and stoic in church out of respect, trying to act perfect...or should we strive for freedom, real faith and an authentic experience with God? We talk about grace and sin too. (39:45) He also describes the paramount importance of faith leaders being connected with the community, local government, other leaders where you live. (46:50) The nonprofit he founded "Unite The Valley" has "lunch and learns" the 2nd Thursday of each month. And soon, they're hosting a leadership symposium January 9-10 in Columbus GA. He talks about the goals of these events, to lift up leaders. Pastor Curtis says the church does not lack anointing but has a lack of leadership. (55:35) And he closes our episode out in Prayer. Happy Thanksgiving! As you're traveling, or before/after you eat, check out this special and shorter episode of the "Run The Race" podcast that you can also subscribe to. I talk about the origins of Thanksgiving - which involve President Lincoln wanting us to use the new holiday to acknowledge God first. It's a holiday that's about much more than food and football (those are great too). You'll also hear, on this pod, some insight on giving thanks as a spiritual discipline...what the Bible says about thankfulness (Psalms, Thessalonians) and how it's tied directly to God...being grateful being the purpose of Thanksgiving...what complaining can end up doing...and why being thankful out loud is powerful, with the help of God's peace. This almost 63-year-old strength and conditioning coach has helped people get stronger, faster, lose weight for 30+ years. And this year, he finished 3rd in his age division in a competition for "Mr. Health & Fitness" and try to be featured in that magazine. (2:05) Richard Berklin - also an elementary PE teacher in Columbus GA - first talks about the importance of being fit, toned at an age. He talks goals and food when he first meets potential clients. That got us talking about nutrition and even moderation over the holidays, including those "cheat days." (8:25) This big strong guy also talks about what he does at the gym in his workouts close to every other day...and how his lifelong passion for fitness started in 7th grader with a coach that told him he was too small. He's still proving people wrong! (12:22) We chatted about Richard's competition to be in "Mr. Health & Fitness" and what he learned in the process. He also has a passion to lead by example and inspire others, educating them with scientific knowledge about strength and conditioning that he's learned along the way. (18:00) How does his coaching work? It depends on what you need. He also tells a story about a client losing close to 200 pounds that emphasizes why support from loved ones like your spouse is vital. (23:31) Richard Barklin has also worked with pro athletes, like some familiar past names with the Atlanta Falcons, but he enjoys college football more. And he reminds us...you can have new fitness goals at any age. What can wealthy people teach us about health and priorities? He explains that...plus why discipline, positivity, and being in the right crowd are ingredients for success. (31:05) There's also that spiritual side to sports and working out. Speaking of that, I close out the episode...with a prayer. Thanks for listening to the #RunTheRace podcast, which I hope you'll subscribe to! Share it with your friends. A few weeks out from Thanksgiving and with all the holiday parties/travel coming up, is exercising a priority for you? My guest this week on the podcast (go subscribe) has some wisdom for you when it comes to fitness, health, plus nutrition, leadership! She is a Crossfit gym owner, an accomplished athlete with Ironmans and triathlons, also a city council member in Columbus GA. (2:09) Joanne Cogle wants to help people get 1% better every day. If you have excuses about working out, she says there's no time like the present to do it. If you're waiting to be good enough or ready, stop waiting. She says it's about your future and quality of life! Group fitness also helps, but how? (11:55) Her fitness journey started in Canada where she grew up, from biking and the YMCA...to being a basketball coach, PE teacher, personal trainer...to taking ideas from an Army gym to open her own. (17:35) Joanne opened CrossFit CSG almost 9 years ago. What's her favorite exercise? She also explains how they're bridging gap for those on the rebound from injuries etc. and the typical "workout of the day" their eclectic group does that are very structured and coached. Learn more about her gym: https://crossfitcsg.com/. (24:36) Also vital for your wellness is nutrition - protein is underrated - and sleep/recovery. (29:06) Seeing a competition on TV sparked Joanne to do an Ironman, and the super competitive athlete has done 20 Ironman distances since then, but says simply walking a 5K is a great start for anyone. The key is to do things that you'll succeed at...then build on that. (36:12) Joanne is also the event promoter for TriColumbusGA that does many local triathlons and races. Making exercise fun is also important, including holiday-themed events like one she's race director for, the Santa Claus Classic 10K through Fantasy in Lights at Callaway Resort and Gardens in GA: https://www.active.com/pine-mountain-ga/running/distance-running-races/santa-claus-classic-10k-2024. (39:20) Finally, she has some advice about leadership and how to treat people as a woman that wears several hats, including now city government leader. The priorities, she says, should be public safety and parks (and rec). Joanne closes us out with how CrossFit has changed her definition of fitness, and how she's inspired by the opportunity to change others' lives. (54:36) And at the end of the episode...my closing prayer Thanks for listening to the #RunTheRace podcast! Also, write a quick review about it, on Apple podcasts. I talked to a war veteran in Cusseta GA who survived 4 combat deployments, including one of the most famous battles from the War in Afghanistan. On the heels of darkness he also went through off the battlefield, this Army hero helped write a semi-autobiographical song "Warriors Set Free" that's now been adopted by a nonprofit for veterans based in West Georgia. (1:25) I give a quick faith-based take on politics on the Presidential election results, then (5:21) you'll hear most of the acoustic version of that song "Warriors Set Free" performed by singer/songwriter and fellow Army vet Tim Maggart. Hear the studio version at https://open.spotify.com/track/71Y7gxRldfsGq0pNfZUwfb?si=930427c932d7472f. (9:42) My wide-ranging conversation with 1st Sgt (Ret) James Clark starts with his 2 deployments to Iraq and 2 to Afghanistan, including his involvement in that war's second costliest battle for the U.S. - the Battle of Kamdesh (at COP Keating) that was portrayed in the movie "The Outpost." He goes into detail about that immense attack by Taliban insurgents and the trauma years later that led him to a nonprofit ministry. (17:22) Clark talks about his "come to Jesus" moments, how faith led him to a much better life, with the help of the Warriors Set Free's one-day "Freedom Appointment" while being on guard for Satan: https://warriorssetfree.org/freedom/. That led him to volunteer with the organization, where he's now on staff as the outreach coordinator for the ministry that also has 4-day "Warriors Battle" mens' retreats that also changed his life. (25:58) Collaborating with Maggart to write the song (just released a month ago), James talked about his testimony now being in music form and how he hopes it touches, inspires other veterans. He also says...it's no longer Army combat, but they're still in battle and spiritual warfare. And he discusses how encounters with God and growing in your faith can lead to transformation and fulfillment. (42:25) I close out the pod episode in prayer. What’s it like to run one of the biggest races in the world, The Chicago Marathon? You’re about to find out. Subscribe to this podcast for stories of fitness and faith, like this race recap. This was several firsts for me: 1st World Major marathon…and as a charity runner for a race…and first time as an adult tourist in Chicago! I was one of the more than 52,000 people, a record number, to finish the 2024 Chicago Marathon. Listen to this “Run the Race” episode to hear about the inspiration (like singing “Amazing Grace” with 1,000 other runners) pre-marathon…the logistics of this huge event and race route that was mostly flat…the incredible support from more than a million spectators including plenty of funny signs…raising money for and being a part of Team World Vision…what I saw and ate in the Windy City, from the Chicago River and deep dish pizza to really cool parks and Chicago dogs…plus dealing with post-race blues and recovery. To learn more about the cause I supported (might do the same with the NYC Marathon next year) and how you can still give, go to https://www.teamworldvision.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=donorDrive.participant&participantID=418235&fbclid=IwY2xjawGEA85leHRuA2FlbQIxMAABHdTaYu-eaopfRYu74ZP4HWwgKFANOD2yBwC4H_Xk8DoF0ESCz8_8SQNxng_aem_Tv_RiIFbhaANYeI8dhPoAQ.
