In this first episode of the “Healthiest Small Town” series, Jollie sits down with the energetic and inspiring Kelly Douglas to discuss how to start a school garden. Kelly, a motivational speaker and self-described Ambassador of Agricultural Joy, is all about spreading joy through dirt & kids. Starting as Oregon’s 500th school garden at Molalla High School, Kelly and students grew their “Culture Club” garden club to over 150 students and helped reduce bullying by 66%!
The conversation dives into how Kelly’s love for dirt has led to flourishing school gardens that unite communities. Jollie and Kelly also brainstorm about activating their local communities, with Jollie sharing his vision of making Boerne, the Healthiest Small Town in Texas through simple, replicable initiatives starting with family fitness nights and a school garden in a single elementary school.
