This past week, as we were gearing up to record an episode, life had to just get in the way. We had a little wiggle room mid-week, so we decided to get something on tape anyway. Just something a little less structured. And so, this B-side was born. The object of the game was to dive deep into Cosmic, the first "reference implementation" in our two desktop series (Cosmic and Plasma) and give you honest opinion, good and bad, as we experienced it on livestream... for two hours. Of course there are tangents, because, well, it's still us. The desktop is quite amazing for something that's only (publicly) existed for a little over a year. We poke almost everything that comes with the default install of Pop_OS! 24.04. We'll poke the rest over the next few weeks. We're interested to hear what you think, especially on the audio version. We tried to describe everything we saw as we went because obviously, you can't see, but surely there's room to improve. If you're curious, the video to go with all this is at: https://youtu.be/RwGZiMTtaoI The audio comes from a few odd sources, so things might not sound normal. Still turned out quite well, overall, but at 1:45:20, we lose Dan's voice. I know, I know, we should have had a backup. We usually have three! But the on-the-flyness of the recording kept us from remembering to even bring in the backup-backup. Either way, sorry about that! It's just Leo at that point, so bear with. We know it's not a normal episode, but we still hope you enjoy! Support Linux User Space…

He then dragged us into a merchandise tangent. Stay tuned for more on that. Scott via Fireside Scott uses Snaps on his Debian server. On the desktop he mostly sticks to Appimages and Flatpaks. Dan from Matrix Dan seldom uses Snaps and has them near the bottom of his ranking. The last one he remembers using is the Nextcloud snap on an Ubuntu server. chraist also on Matrix chraist uses Void and doesn't have Systemd therefore doesn't use Snaps. He asked if we thought there would ever be a Snap solution without Systemd. bgt from Matrix bgt says "meh, snaps aren't really that worth it to be honest. If there was no flatpak, sure, but like this, there's no need." Marshman from Discord Marshman thinks Snaps are a handy delivery method for proprietary applications. 🧹Housekeeping🧹 Catch these and other great topics as they unfold on our Subreddit or our News channel on Discord. 🗞️ Linux User Space Lemmy 📰 Linux User Space subreddit ⌨️ Linux User Space Discord Server 📲 Linux User Space Telegram ✉️ Linux User Space Matrix 📽️ Linux User Space Twitch 🐘 Linux User Space Mastodon 📜 Linux User Space Twitter 📺️ Linux User Space TILVids 📱 Linux User Space Bluesky 🔭Next Time🔭 We plan to cover the history of Flatpaks.
