Welcome to episode no. 26 (November 2024) of Diabetes Care “On Air”—a new and different way to bring the research published in Diabetes Care to life. Join co-hosts Alice Cheng, MD, FRCPC, and Michael Rickels, MD, MS, as they discuss the latest and greatest content in the November 2024 issue of Diabetes Care and beyond.

0:40 In the spirit of Thanksgiving, Alice and Mike begin with a special offer from the ADA for new and renewing members: a 15% discount on a 1- or 2-year membership. Go to professional.diabetes.org/membership, create your account, fill out the application, and use the discount code ‘FALL24’ at checkout. Act fast because this offer expires November 30, 2024!

3:00 In a Diabetes Care “On Air” first, Michael interviews not a clinician, but a lawyer. Anthony May, a law partner at Brown, Goldstein, and Levy, LLP in Baltimore, MD, is the senior author of “Diabetes and Driving: A Statement of the American Diabetes Association.” This statement provides an overview of existing licensing rules for people with diabetes in the U.S., addresses the factors that affect driving ability, identifies general guidelines for assessing driver fitness and determining appropriately tailored licensing restrictions, and provides practical guidance for health care professionals regarding clinical interventions and education for people with diabetes. This review is available for free at doi.org/10.2337/dci24-0068.

16:15 Amy is joined by Dr. Daniel J. Drucker, endocrinologist and professor of medicine at the Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute, Mt. Sinai Hospital, University of Toronto, and one of Time Magazine’s 100 most influential people of 2024. They discuss his review, “Efficacy and Safety of GLP-1 Medicines for Type 2 Diabetes and Obesity.” This article is available for free at doi.org/10.2337/dci24-0003.

30:45 In the “Diabetes Care Rapid Exchange,” Alice and Mike wrap up the episode by reviewing several interesting articles in the October 2024 issue of Diabetes Care. Studies highlighted in this segment include:

  • Retnakaran et al. A Glycemic Threshold Above Which the Improvement of β-Cell Function and Glycemia in Response to Insulin Therapy Is Amplified in Early Type 2 Diabetes: The Reversal of Glucotoxicity doi.org/10.2337/dc24-1375
  • Yang et al. Maternal Glycemia During Pregnancy and Child Lung Function: A Prospective Cohort Study doi.org/10.2337/dc24-0865
  • Lim et al. Utilizing Continuous Glucose Monitoring for Early Detection of Gestational Diabetes and Pregnancy Outcomes in an Asian Population doi.org/10.2337/dc24-0944
  • Agarwal et al. The Supporting Emerging Adults With Diabetes (SEAD) Program: An Adult-Based Real-World Clinical Model That Improves Hospitalizations, Diabetes Technology Uptake, and Glycemic Outcomes in Underserved Young Adults With Type 1 Diabetes doi.org/10.2337/dc24-1346
  • Beunen et al. Advanced Hybrid Closed-Loop Therapy Compared With Standard Insulin Therapy Intrapartum and Early Postpartum in Women With Type 1 Diabetes: A Secondary Observational Analysis From the CRISTAL Randomized Controlled Trial doi.org/10.2337/dc24-1320
  • Htoo et al. Health Care Utilization and Costs Associated With Empagliflozin in Older Adults With Type 2 Diabetes doi.org/10.2337/dc24-0270
