In this essential episode, Lindsey breaks down the 10 distinct phases of eating disorder recovery, drawing from Carolyn Costin's research while adding her own spiritual and practical insights. From the initial denial phase of "I don't think I have a problem" all the way to complete recovery, this roadmap helps you identify exactly where you are in your journey and what comes next. If you've ever felt confused about your progress or wondered if you're "doing recovery right," this episode provides the clarity you've been searching for. The 10 Phases of Recovery (Quick Reference) Phase 1: "I don't think I have a problem" - Complete denial, "this is just who I am" Phase 2: "I might have a problem, but it's not that bad" - The "I'm fine" and "not sick enough" phase Phase 3: "I have a problem but I don't care" - Awareness without motivation to change Phase 4: "I want to change but don't know how and I'm terrified" - The breakthrough moment Phase 5: "I tried to change but couldn't" - Previous attempts didn't work, feeling hopeless Phase 6: "I can stop some behaviors but not all" - Partial progress, selective recovery Phase 7: "I can stop behaviors but thoughts remain" - Actions changing, mindset lagging Phase 8: "Often free from behaviors and thoughts, but something feels missing" - The spiritual component gap Phase 9: "Free from behaviors and thoughts, surrendered control" - Nearly complete freedom Phase 10: "I am recovered" - 6+ months of complete freedom, helping others Key Insights You'll Gain On Recovery Reality (4:00-5:00) "The secret to recovery isn't forgetting the pain existed or diminishing the damage that occurred. It's allowing it to be there, but that pain and damage no longer controls and defines every ounce of who you are." On Getting Stuck in Phases (18:00-19:00) "We can get trapped in wanting recovery to go perfectly, that we stay in one of these phases too long because we're not sure that we've mastered it yet. Every single day is an opportunity to grow and move forward." On the Missing Ingredient (13:00-15:00) "There's gonna be days where your promise to yourself, your commitment to yourself is just not enough... There's gonna be days where you need a higher motivator." On Progress Over Perfection "These different phases of recovery are all about progression over perfection. You don't have to master each phase - you just have to keep moving through them." Why This Framework Changes Everything Eliminates confusion about where you are in recovery Normalizes the non-linear nature of healing Provides hope when you feel stuck or lost Identifies specific support needs for each phase Prevents perfectionist paralysis in recovery Highlights the importance of spiritual/soul work in lasting freedom Perfect for Women Who: Feel confused about their recovery progress Wonder if they're "doing recovery right" Have tried recovery before and want to understand what went wrong Are considering getting professional help but aren't sure they're "ready" Want to understand the long-term recovery journey Need hope that complete freedom is actually possible Are supporting someone else in recovery Throughout this episode, Lindsey weaves in her own experience spending extended time in various phases, particularly Phase 3 ("I have a problem but I don't care") and Phase 8 (feeling like something was missing until she incorporated spiritual surrender). Her vulnerability about getting stuck and her insights about the soul component of recovery make this more than just clinical information. Ready to Move to Your Next Phase? If you're in Phases 4-5 (wanting change but scared or having tried before), this is the perfect time to get personalized support. Lindsey specializes in meeting women exactly where they are and creating a path forward that honors your unique situation and fears. In this powerful episode, Lindsey explores how eating disorders and food obsession act as "time thieves" and "energy vampires," stealing your presence from the moments and people that matter most. She shares the life-changing realization that when we don't sacrifice for what we ultimately want, we become the ultimate sacrifice - and our relationships pay the price. Key Takeaways 🎯 The Real Cost of Food Obsession Eating disorders aren't just about food - they're mental energy drains that steal your presence from your own life The constant mental chatter about food planning, guilt, and rules exhausts you before your day even begins Your pursuit of food perfection is sacrificing your ability to be fully present with the people you love 💡 The Sacrifice Revelation "If you don't sacrifice for what you ultimately want, then you become the ultimate sacrifice." What you ultimately want: Connection, presence, energy for what matters, peace of mind What's actually being sacrificed: Time with your spouse, conversations with your kids, your ability to be fully present in your own life 🔄 The Present Over Perfect Shift Your family doesn't need a perfect you - they need a present you. Stop waiting to be worthy of love when you "figure out" the food thing. You're worth loving right now, struggles and all. 4 Practical Strategies to Reclaim Your Presence Strategy #1: The 3-Second Check-In Throughout your day, pause and ask: "Where is my mind right now?" If caught in food thoughts during important moments, simply notice without judgment Ask: "What would it look like to be fully here right now?" Strategy #2: The Energy Audit Track for one day how often you catch yourself in food-related thoughts Make a mark on your phone each time you're planning, worrying, calculating, or obsessing about food Count them at day's end - this is how much life force is being redirected from what matters Strategy #3: The Presence Practice Choose one meal/snack daily to eat with complete presence Put phone away, don't plan next meal, ignore calorie counting Focus on taste, texture, satisfaction - practice being fully there Strategy #4: The Connection Redirect When spiraling into food thoughts, immediately reach out to someone you love Text your teenager, call your spouse, hug your pet Redirect mental energy toward connection instead of obsession Real-Life Application: The Dinner Table Revolution Make dinner time device-free AND food-rule-free for your mind: No mental calorie counting or meal planning during family time Ask about everyone's day and really listen Share something about your day unrelated to food Practice being completely present with your family This Week's Homework Choose one person in your life and commit to being fully present with them for at least 10 minutes every day: Morning coffee with your spouse After-school time with your child Phone call with a friend or family member No phone, no food thoughts, no mental planning - just you, fully there Episode Quotes "Every moment you spend obsessing about food is a moment you're not fully living your life." "Your kids don't need a perfect mom. Your spouse doesn't need a perfect partner. They need YOU. Present, engaged, fully there YOU." "You are not your thoughts about food. You are a woman with purpose, with love to give, with a life that's happening right now." Are you stuck in the cycle of starting and stopping recovery? Always "trying" but never fully committing? In this game-changing episode, Lindsey reveals how one simple phrase is sabotaging your progress and keeping you trapped in what she calls "decision defaulting." Learn the neuroscience behind why "I'm trying" programs your brain for failure, and discover the powerful mindset shift that transforms chronic restarters into recovery success stories. If you're tired of living in the "maybe someday" space and ready to make decisions that stick, this episode will revolutionize your approach to healing. What You'll Learn in This Episode The psychology behind "decision defaulting" and why your brain prefers it How the phrase "I'm trying" creates neural pathways for partial commitment The difference between illusion of control vs. real personal power Specific language shifts that activate "implementation intention" Why your eating disorder wants you to stay in "trying" mode A concrete challenge to break the decision defaulting cycle this week How to know when you're ready for professional support vs. continued self-help Key Moments & Timestamps Opening CTA for Consultation (0:30-2:00) Lindsey speaks directly to chronic restarters and those hesitant to start recovery What is Decision Defaulting? (2:00-5:00) "'Trying' is just a socially acceptable way of avoiding responsibility for your choices." Client Story: Emma's 3-Year Trying Cycle (3:30-4:30) How one client's language shift changed everything in recovery The Neuroscience of Decision Defaulting (5:00-8:30) Why undernourished brains default to tentative language and how trauma responses play a role From Trying to Deciding: The Power Shift (8:30-12:00) Specific examples of language that creates commitment vs. escape routes Your Decision-Making Challenge (12:00-14:00) Two concrete options to practice decisive action this week Powerful Quotes from This Episode On Decision Defaulting: "Decision defaulting is when you avoid making definitive choices because not deciding feels safer than deciding 'wrong.'" On the Trying Trap: "When you say 'I'm trying,' you're leaving yourself an escape route. You're keeping one foot out the door. You're protecting yourself from the vulnerability of full commitment." On Neural Pathways: "Every time you make a definitive choice and follow through, you strengthen the neural pathways associated with self-efficacy and personal agency. Every time you default on a decision, you reinforce the pathways associated with helplessness." On Eating Disorder Strategy: "Your eating disorder wants you to keep 'trying.' It wants you to stay in that wishy-washy space where you're sort of committed but not really. Because as long as you're just trying, you're not a real threat to its control over your life." On Real Power: "The power isn't in making perfect decisions. The power is in making decisions and sticking with them long enough to see what happens." Language Shifts That Change Everything Instead of: "I'm trying to eat regular meals" Decide: "I'm deciding to eat breakfast at 8am, lunch at 1pm, and dinner at 6pm, regardless of how I feel about it" Instead of: "I'm trying to be less active" Decide: "I'm deciding to take three complete rest days this week and limit exercise to 30 minutes on active days" Instead of: "I'm trying to stop weighing myself" Decide: "I'm deciding to remove the scale from my house and ask my roommate to hide it" Instead of: "I'm thinking about getting help" Decide: "I'm deciding to schedule consultation calls with three recovery coaches this week" This Week's Decision Challenge Option 1: The Immediate Action Decision Choose ONE thing you've been "trying" to do in recovery and make a definitive decision about it today. Write it down: "I am deciding to _______." Take one concrete action within 24 hours. Option 2: The Support Decision If you've been "thinking about" getting help, either decide you're going to take action and schedule consultations or decide you're not ready and stop the maybe-someday torture. Scientific Research Referenced Dr. Carol Dweck's studies on language and behavior creating neural pathways Dr. Peter Gollwitzer's research on implementation intentions (2-3x more likely to follow through) Dr. Kristin Neff's research on self-compassion and decision-making fear Ready to Stop Decision Defaulting? Free Consultation with Lindsey If you're ready to stop the cycle of starting and stopping recovery, or finally take that first real step into healing, Lindsey is offering complimentary consultation calls. During your call, you'll get clarity on: Where you are vs. where you want to be in recovery What kind of support would best serve your specific situation Whether working together makes sense for your journey Your next right step forward (with no pressure or obligation) Schedule your call: www.herbestself.co Lindsey personally responds to every application within 48 hours Connect With Lindsey Instagram: @thelindseynichol Website: www.herbestself.co Email: info@lindseynichol.com If This Episode Hit Home Please rate, review, and subscribe to the Her Best Self podcast. Your support helps more women discover that they have the power to stop "trying" and start deciding their way to freedom. Share this episode with someone who's been stuck in the "trying" cycle - they need to hear that their power lives in their decisions, not their intentions. Remember: You are not broken. You are not weak. You are just ready to stop defaulting and start deciding. Your future self is waiting for you to choose her over your eating disorder, your dreams over your fears, your healing over your habits.…

In this episode, Lindsey speaks directly to the exhausted high-achieving woman, who's spent decades restricting food and over-exercising while trying to lead in every area of life. Drawing from her personal recovery from anorexia and years of coaching experience, Lindsey helps you understand how your "body story" - those deep-rooted messages about what your body should look like and what it means about your worth - was written by diet culture, not by you. Learn how to identify the costly messages you've been carrying and discover a framework for rewriting your relationship with your body from shame to self-compassion. What You'll Learn in This Episode How to identify the specific cultural messages that shaped your relationship with your body The hidden costs of carrying shame-based body stories (energy, presence, relationships, dreams) Why your body became a "project to control" rather than a "home to inhabit" The difference between health and size (and why conflating them keeps you trapped) A practical framework for rewriting your body story starting this week Specific daily practices to shift from body criticism to body appreciation Key Moments & Timestamps Opening (0:30-2:00) Lindsey speaks directly to exhausted high-achievers ready to break the restrict-exercise cycle The Body Story Begins (2:00-5:00) "When did you first learn that your body was a problem to be solved? You didn't start out hating your body. You learned to." Cultural Messages That Shaped You (5:00-8:00) "Good girls don't take up too much space" "Your body is your responsibility to control" "Thin equals healthy, healthy equals worthy" "Successful women have it all together, including their bodies" The True Cost of Body Shame (8:00-10:30) What carrying these stories has cost you in energy, presence, authentic self, health, relationships, and dreams Rewriting Your New Story (10:30-13:30) "Your body is not a problem to be solved. It's a miracle to be appreciated." Powerful Quotes from This Episode On Learning Body Shame: "You didn't start out hating your body. You learned to. You learned from a culture that profits from your insecurity." On the Prison of Control: "That same control that felt like freedom was actually building your prison, brick by brick, year by year." On Exhaustion: "You're successful in every other area of your life. You lead teams, you manage budgets, you solve complex problems... But when it comes to your body, you still feel like that confused young girl who learned that her worth was tied to her weight." On True Health: "True health includes your mental well-being, your energy levels, your ability to do the things you love, your hormonal balance, your sleep quality, your stress management. None of these things require you to be a certain weight or size." On Taking Up Space: "As a leader, as a woman, as a human being - you are allowed to have needs, to have desires, to exist fully in your body without apologizing for it." This Week's Body Story Rewrite Actions Morning Body Appreciation: Thank your body for something it did for you yesterday instead of immediately focusing on what you don't like Intuitive Nourishment: Ask "What would feel good and nourishing right now?" instead of "What should I eat according to my rules?" Joyful Movement: Choose movement based on how you want to feel, not calories you want to burn Compassionate Self-Talk: When you catch body criticism, ask "Would I talk to my best friend this way?" Your New Body Story Framework Old Story: "My body is a problem to be solved through restriction and exercise" New Story: "My body is a miracle to be appreciated and cared for with compassion" Old Story: "My worth depends on my size and what I eat" New Story: "My worth exists because I exist - my body is the vehicle for my life, not the determiner of my value" Old Story: "I must control my body to be successful" New Story: "I honor my body's wisdom and treat it as I would treat a dear friend's body" Ready for Personalized Support? In this powerful episode, Lindsey shares a weekend experience with her son that completely reframes what recovery success looks like. Using the analogy of a terrifying roller coaster ride, she challenges the myth that recovery should feel comfortable and reveals why the hardest moments might actually be where the most important healing happens. If you've been beating yourself up because parts of recovery still feel impossible, or if you're waiting for healing to feel "good" before you fully commit, this episode will shift your entire perspective on courage, progress, and what it truly means to succeed in recovery. What You'll Learn in This Episode Why recovery doesn't have to feel good to be working effectively How to redefine recovery success beyond comfort and ease The difference between courage and confidence (and why courage is enough) Why the struggle IS the work, not a sign that you're failing Practical ways to honor your bravery even when recovery feels terrifying How to stay committed to healing when every instinct tells you to quit Key Takeaways & Quotes On Recovery Not Feeling Good (4:30) "You don't have to enjoy recovery for it to be changing your life... What if the victory isn't in loving the process, but in staying on the ride anyway?" On Redefining Success (8:45) "Every time you eat when your eating disorder says restrict - that's courage, even if it feels awful. Every time you choose rest over compulsive exercise - that's strength, even if your anxiety is through the roof." On Courage vs. Comfort (10:15) "Recovery success isn't never having eating disorder thoughts again. It's learning to recognize those thoughts and choosing not to act on them, even when they're loud and persistent." On The Hardest Moments (11:30) "When you're struggling the most, when recovery feels impossible, when every instinct is telling you to go back to your eating disorder - that's when you're doing the deepest healing work." This Week's Recovery Challenge Find one moment this week where you chose recovery despite it feeling hard. Instead of minimizing that moment or focusing on how uncomfortable it felt, say out loud: "I am proud of myself for doing that hard thing." Remember: You don't have to love recovery to be succeeding at it. You just have to keep showing up. Real Talk Recovery Reminders The struggle isn't a sign that recovery isn't working - the struggle IS the work You can be proud of your courage even when recovery doesn't feel good Discomfort doesn't equal danger - it often equals growth Your difficult recovery experience doesn't mean you're doing it wrong Building emotional strength happens in the uncomfortable moments Ready for support on your recovery roller coaster? In this powerful episode of the Her Best Self podcast, Lindsey explores what it truly means to go ALL IN on your recovery journey. Inspired by a church sermon on faith, she unpacks the different levels of commitment in recovery—from ankle-deep hesitation to full blown surrender—and challenges you to identify where you're holding back. If you're tired of partial results and ready to experience true freedom from disordered eating, this episode offers both inspiration and practical next steps for going ALL IN on yourself and your healing. What You'll Learn The four levels of commitment in recovery: ankle-deep, knee-deep, waist-deep, and ALL IN How staying in your comfort zone blocks your healing progress The exhausting reality of wearing the "eating disorder mask" and the freedom that comes from removing it Practical examples of what going ALL IN looks like in everyday recovery Biblical wisdom that supports full surrender in the recovery process One tangible action step to move toward going ALL IN this week Highlights From This Episode On Partial Commitment (3:12) "Partial commitment yields partial results. To experience the full freedom that recovery offers, you have to go ALL IN. That means complete surrender. Complete trust. Complete willingness to feel ALL of your feelings without using food or exercise to numb them." On Getting Out of Your Own Way (5:45) "How often are YOU getting in the way of your own recovery? How often are you blocking your own healing because you're trying to control everything? Because you're not willing to trust the process? Because you're holding onto the false comfort of your eating disorder?" On Removing the Mask (8:30) "The eating disorder has pulled a mask over you - a false identity that you might have worn for years or even decades... Going ALL IN means pulling away that mask and saying, 'This is who I really am. This is what I'm really struggling with. This is what I really need.'" On Redirecting Energy (10:15) "When you go ALL IN on recovery, you get to redirect all that energy toward actually living your life. Toward your relationships, your passions, your purpose. Toward the woman God created you to be." Scripture Referenced Romans 12:2 – "Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind." Proverbs 3:5-6 – "Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight." Psalm 139:14 – "I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well." Your Recovery Action Step Identify ONE area where you've been holding back in recovery, and take ONE step toward going ALL IN in that area this week. Write it down, share it with someone who will hold you accountable, and commit to taking that step even when it feels uncomfortable. In this powerful episode of Her Best SELF podcast, Lindsey shares why the messy, difficult moments in eating disorder recovery aren't signs of failure—they're actually where the deepest healing happens. If you've been beating yourself up for struggling, if recovery feels impossibly hard, or if you're wondering why you're not "further along," this episode offers the permission and compassion you need to keep going. What You'll Discover: Why the myth of "perfect recovery" sets us up for unnecessary shame The three dimensions where it's normal to struggle: body, mind, and soul How to distinguish between normal recovery challenges and actual setbacks Practical tools for embracing difficult moments without giving up Why self-compassion accelerates healing more than perfectionism ever could Featured Quotes: "Recovery isn't about becoming perfect. It's about reclaiming your voice in a world that tried to silence you with impossible standards." - Geneen Roth Key Moments: [00:03:45] Lindsey shares a personal breakthrough moment from her anorexia recovery [00:06:30] The science behind why recovery feels chaotic (and why that's normal!) [00:09:15] Understanding the body, mind, and soul dimensions of healing [00:12:00] Five practical strategies for embracing "not okay" moments [00:14:00] How to know you're still making progress even when it doesn't feel like it Practical Tools Mentioned: Creating a personal "comfort menu" for difficult moments The "pause and breathe" technique for interrupting shame spirals Documentation practices to recognize non-scale victories Community-building strategies for authentic recovery support Listener Action Step: The next time you feel like you're failing at recovery because it feels so hard, place a hand on your heart and say: "This is really hard right now, and that's okay. I'm doing my best." Notice how giving yourself permission to struggle actually creates space for healing. Ready for personalized recovery support? Hey sis, I am going to go on a riff with you for a little because I just showed up to the mic today and I'm feeling very creative. I'm in one of my centers of energy where I feel like I could just go on one and not even have a podcast script, which I typically do try to leverage some bullet points that I want to share with you for every single episode to make it super tactical. But today I really want to talk about love and self love because it's love month. Today is Valentine's day here! We are doing all the Valentine's exchanges and showing the people that we love in our life even more love today. I try to tell my kids we should show love every day, but today is just an extra little bonus of love (and chocolate!). So I encourage you to get some Dove and spend quality time to yourself. But even if you aren't at the Dove chocolates just yet....honoring you and how far you have come in your journey of navigating food freedom is just as important. Your best today, sis, can be your best. Your body is your vessel and your home, and it's important that even if we're not feeling totally in love with our body that we can appreciate and view it as a palace of self love and respect. If you feel that you're confused on where to turn next and life feels so heavy and you feel like you're doing the same thing expecting different results, then I want you to turn to you. I want you to turn inward and I also want you to turn to God upward and whatever that looks like for you versus outward. Which is what we do, we tend to turn to the world when we're not feeling enough. Today, I just want you to think about what self love looks like for you personally? I wanted to dive into this topic on the podcast because it is incredibly challenging in recovery. First of all, learning to love yourself and recognizing your own strengths. And if you're like many people in recovery, including my own self, my past journey, you might find it super easy to support others, but then you don't show that same kind of love or that same kind of kindness to you. In Episode 197.5, I wanted to explore some practical ways that you can nurture that self love and how you can spread love and awareness as you acknowledge your progress. Join me for today's HBS episode! xo, lindsey Find All the Things -> www.herbestself.co ______ Coach with Me -> Client Application ______ Email me directly -> info@lindseynichol.com ______ Join the free FB community -> www.herbestselfsociety.com ______ Need a helping hand guiding you girl!? Hey girl! I am super excited to talk to you today about something deeply personal, yet universally relevant in my life right now. And that is the art of being a beginner, and being a beginner again. This is a concept that not only has kind of resurrected itself as I continue to coach more and more women in healing their relationships with food and their body, but specifically in the context of facing a challenge like recovery when you're in the messy middle of it. This type of challenge requires you to build again, to rebuild your life, to create this best version of you and to become a beginner again, because everything that your mind has taught you over time and those lies that you've been believing are truths are really just lies. You are not going to be unlovable if you gain weight. You are not going to be rejected if you nourish your body. You are not going to live trapped in your thoughts forever....all of those are just LIES. And the reality is, is the more awareness that you get around this, the more present you are and the more still you are, the more you realize, rationally, you're going to have to relearn some things. You're going to have to be okay being a beginner. That can take some time and some hard work and quite honestly it can be challenging when you love being a high performer or a master in all areas of your life. So today's podcast episode is all around the art of beginning again. I hope you will tune into to this one girl and share it with someone you love! I'm going to challenge you with some stillness this week and to give you four different strategies that you can try on to apply to your life, so that you can create a more peaceful life full of all the very BEST things. "Failure is the opportunity to begin again more intelligently". ~Henry Ford "You must learn to stop thinking in beginnings and endings, successes and failures, and begin to treat everything in your life as a learning experience instead of a proving one." ~Guy Finley xo, lindsey Find All the Things -> www.herbestself.co ______ Coach with Me -> Client Application ______ Email me directly -> info@lindseynichol.com ______ Join the free FB community -> www.facebook.com/groups/herbestselfsociety/ ______ Need a helping hand guiding you girl!? Hey girl! It's FINALLY Friday & do I have an amazing Podcast episode for you! This one is all about PROCRASTINATION! Are you a perfectionist? Dreamer? Blamer? Overdoer? If clouds are full of water, they pour rain on the earth. Whether a tree falls to the south or to the north, in the place where it falls, there it will lie. Whoever watches the wind will not plant; whoever looks at the clouds will not reap. ~Ecclesiastes 11:3-4 If you want change but then find yourself pushing it off & so you struggle day after day to actually move forward....oh how I see you! I remember opening up the fridge only to not know what to eat...yet, I had just left the grocery store. I remember looking at the clock, secretly wishing I could have something to eat...but in my mind, "it was too early". If either of these situations resonate with you then I encourage you to listen in to this episode I discuss how procrastination is a symptom of a feeling and underlying belief & how it can be unlearned & changed. Hey sis! It is January and we are rolling in deep and today we're going to be talking about something that has been so heavy on my heart lately. And that is how your relationship with food isn't just affecting your health, but how it could be holding back your leadership potential and the significant impact that you're meant to have in this world. Marshawn Daniels says it best in her devotional..."As women, we've had an up and down roller coaster like relationship with the word leadership. On one hand, we're supposed to be submissive and supportive. We learned so much about surrender, but less about stepping up. We want to expand the kingdom, but we don't want to step out of place. We want to be a good wife. We want to be a pleasing daughter. We want to be a wonderful mother, but we're afraid to admit that our hearts are craving something more. And therein lies a holy tension. See, God desires that we absorb the wisdom of others, but also that we never place the perspective of other people and this world above His voice and His plan." And the truth is that leadership is your birthright. It's in your DNA. I cannot agree with that more. I have felt God nudging me and calling me to lead even more this year. And you know what breaks my heart? Seeing brilliant, capable women sitting on the sidelines of their own lives because their eating disorder has convinced them that controlling food and their body is more important than their God given purpose. ~ Today on the podcast, we're going to talk about your unhealthy relationship with food is actually a stronghold, keeping you from becoming the best version of you and from becoming a leader that you're meant to be. You see, I personally believe that my word for the year, "leadership" is not just meant for me, but it's meant for you too, because leadership is so tightly ingrained in our identity. And when you can't believe in your own identity because you have been living under the cloud of false truths in your mind, then you forget that you are a mighty warrior. You forget that you have influence. You forget that God has been grooming you since you were born for a purpose. ~ I want to ask you something: when is the last time you thought about the influence that you're meant to have here, not just in your family or in your job, but on this planet in this world? 2025 is all about leadership for me. I'm realizing more and more how many of us are letting so many other things in our life, things of quote, "the world", rob us of our leadership potential, rob us of our impact. These beliefs that we're not good enough, or we're not qualified, or we haven't yet arrived, or we aren't there yet. All these things, they're literally sucking the hope out of your journey forward. And without HOPE, I mean, what is it that we truly have anyways? Am I right? I want you to stop letting your ED, letting this relationship with food, steal the rest of your life and your leadership potential. Happy Friday sister friend! Did you know that people who visualize their goals are DOUBLE as confident they'll achieve them than those who don't. And what is even more astonishing is that 82% of people who used a vision board to support their future goals reporting having accomplished half of them before they even thought they would? Yep, pretty awesome right? Well, I used to roll my eyes when my treatment team shared with me the importance of creating a vision board when I was working towards my recovery. Yet, this powerful creative tool has so many benefits & TRUE stats show that it can help you navigate real results towards your freedom journey. In Episode 191.5, I share with you the importance of visual representation of WHO you are becoming & how you can design your very own Best Self Board to help propel you into action this year. Happy January sister friend! So the boys and I rang in the new year in a new place this year. Hopefully you've had a great start to your new year! We surely had an awesome experience. We took the boys tubing at a ski resort in the Blue Ridge mountains, and it was fantabulous. Yes, I'm still a beach girl. And yes, I dread being cold, but between the fireplace and the glorious snow, it was beautiful. The mountains were breathtaking and it was just what my soul desperately needed...but back to reality and the podcast with you. And I am so happy to be back here recording a new show today! I can't wait for you to tune in to Episode 191 :) As we made memories over the break, I got to thinking about 2025 and goals and just how much influence culture has on our personal goals and expectations. Not that that's a bad thing, but just hear me out here. So yes, January is the start of a new year, but society makes us feel disorganized, society makes us feel lazy and unproductive if we don't set massive, crazy, audacious goals as soon as the clock strikes midnight. And I just got to thinking, I'm not. Not this year! And I'm not suggesting not to have goals for this year. I'm not saying that I don't have personal goals and I don't have business goals. But for me, the way I want to view my 2025 journey is going to be different. Instead of aiming at these massive goals, I plan on aiming at the goals that God places on my heart. But with INTENTION and less pressure of my timeline. I want to stop looking around and comparing myself to what everyone else is doing or what everyone else is thinking. And so I wanted to share today's episode to help you grant yourself the same grace and permission, because maybe like me, you don't have it all together either and maybe you haven't decided to read 20 books in 2025. And maybe you don't even know what a resolution could be for you. So here is what I want you to think about. Instead of trying on another resolution that may or may not last until February, I want you to think about how you want to do this year differently and how you want to show up with grace and permission as you lean into the best version of yourself. Tune in to this one friend! Let's ring in the new year strong! xo, lindsey Find All the Things -> wwww.herbestself.co ______ Coach with Me -> Client Application ______ Email me directly -> info@lindseynichol.com ______ Join the free FB community -> www.herbestselfsociety.com ______ Need a helping hand guiding you girl!? If you're feeling stuck in your recovery journey, Episode 210.5, shares the top hidden barriers that might be keeping you chained to eating disorder patterns - and how to break free once and for all. IN THIS EPISODE Things to Stop Doing: Stop Assuming You Always Know What's Best Eating disorders thrive on the illusion of expertise "I know what's best" is often the disorder speaking, not your wisdom Recovery requires challenging your own assumptions Professional guidance provides perspective you can't see from within Stop Believing the Lie That You Aren't Doing Enough to Recover Recovery isn't about doing more; it's about being more "Never enough" mentality leads to recovery perfectionism The essential ingredient isn't more tasks—it's self-compassion Ask: "How can I bring more compassion to this moment?" Stop Avoiding Discomfort The only way out is through Eating disorders themselves are systems for avoiding discomfort Recovery requires moving toward discomfort, not away from it Each time you face discomfort, you build resilience Stop Thinking the Worst Possible Scenario Is Gaining Weight The real worst-case scenario is never experiencing freedom As long as weight gain remains your greatest fear, the disorder retains power Recovery may include body changes, but they aren't the catastrophe predicted There is no wrong choice in recovery—only refusing to make a choice ACTION STEPS Identify which of these 10 patterns is most holding you back Choose one pattern to focus on disrupting this week Practice moving toward discomfort rather than away from it Revisit your recovery priorities and realign your energy accordingly Consider whether professional support could help you break these patterns Remember, you are NOT your eating disorder and you are worthy of a life that is FREE from it. xo, lindsey Find All the Things -> wwww.herbestself.co ______ Coach with Me -> Client Application ______ Email me directly -> info@lindseynichol.com ______ Join the free FB community -> www.herbestselfsociety.com ______ Need a helping hand guiding you girl!? If you're feeling stuck in your recovery journey, this part 1 of a 2 part episode shares the top hidden barriers that might be keeping you chained to eating disorder patterns - and how to break free once and for all. IN THIS EPISODE Things to Stop Doing: Stop Waiting for Perfect Circumstances There will never be a "perfect time" to heal Recovery happens IN life, not separate from it The waiting game is another form of control and perfectionism Recovery requires a decision, not ideal conditions Stop Spending Time and Energy on Things That Aren't Recovery Priorities Your time and energy are your most precious recovery resources Identify where you're "leaking energy" through triggering activities Ask yourself: Does this support my healing or undermine it? Recovery requires intentional redirection of your resources Stop Comparing Yourself to Everyone Else Comparison is a recovery killer You're comparing your behind-the-scenes to others' highlight reels Your recovery journey is unique to your body and history The only valuable comparison is to your yesterday self Stop Changing Course - Results Take Time and Commitment Recovery isn't a race; it's a journey "Recovery whiplash" prevents momentum and lasting change Recovery tools are like muscles - they get stronger with consistent use Before abandoning your approach, ask if you've given it a fair chance Stop Thinking You're So Out of the Ordinary You are not the only person who has ever navigated this The core patterns of eating disorders are remarkably consistent Feeling "uniquely broken" becomes an excuse to stay stuck Connection to others with shared experiences is powerful medicine Stop Thinking Short Term You deserve lasting freedom, not just getting through the next meal Short-term focus can lead to decisions that undermine long-term healing Recovery requires balancing daily work with a vision of what you're working toward Think in terms of years, not just days Remember, you are NOT your eating disorder and you are worthy of a life that is FREE from it. Come back on Friday, to listen to the 2nd part of Episode 210, where I unravel the remaining 4 things for you to stop doing today! In this episode, I discuss the importance of making yourself the priority in recovery and I introduce the powerful RAIN method. This method can be used just 5 minutes a day for practicing mindfulness and self-compassion during difficult moments in your eating disorder recovery journey. Your Assignment is YOU This season is about planting seeds for your own growth and healing You need permission to make your recovery the priority Self-care isn't self-indulgence—it's essential recovery work Recovery takes root when you commit to "watering your garden first" The Seasons of Recovery We expect constant productivity from ourselves but don't apply the same standards to nature There are natural seasons for growth, rest, and transformation The eating disorder thrives when you're depleted and exhausted Rest and self-nurturing create the conditions for healing What It Means to "Water Yourself" Providing consistent, adequate nourishment without food rules Hydration—both literal and metaphorical waters of connection Exposure to things that bring joy and remind you who you are Rest periods where you're simply being, not producing The RAIN Method Breakdown Recognize what's happening in the moment without judgment Notice triggers, urges, thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations Name what you're experiencing to create space between you and the experience Allow the experience to be there without trying to fix or change it Stop fighting against difficult emotions or thoughts Break the cycle of shame by acknowledging "this is what's happening right now" Investigate with kindness and curiosity Ask gentle questions: "What triggered this?" "What am I really needing?" Notice where you feel sensations in your body Identify the stories you're telling yourself Nurture yourself with self-compassion Offer yourself what you truly need in the moment Speak to yourself as you would to a dear friend Remember that difficult feelings will pass I hope Episode 209 blesses you & that you share it with someone else who may benefit! xo, lindsey Find All the Things -> wwww.herbestself.co ______ Coach with Me -> Client Application ______ Email me directly -> info@lindseynichol.com ______ Join the free FB community -> www.herbestselfsociety.com ______ Need a helping hand guiding you girl!? In this powerful episode, we tackle one of the biggest barriers to eating disorder recovery: waiting to feel "ready." Statistics show the average person waits seven years between eating disorder onset and seeking treatment—seven years of suffering that could be avoided sis! In Episode 208, we explore why "ready" isn't a feeling that magically appears but a decision you make despite fear and uncertainty. Through client stories, expert insights, and practical steps, you'll discover how to move forward in your recovery journey without waiting for the perfect moment. Whether you're struggling with anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder, or disordered eating patterns, this episode offers the perspective shift and motivation you need to take that crucial first step toward healing. IN THIS EPISODE, YOU'LL LEARN: Why the eating disorder voice will never tell you it's time to recover The myth of "feeling ready" and how it keeps you trapped in the cycle How to make the decision to start recovery even while feeling afraid Small, manageable steps you can take today, regardless of your "readiness" The life that awaits on the other side of this crucial decision KEY QUOTES "Ready isn't when the fear disappears. Ready is when you decide to move forward despite the fear." "You don't have to be ready for the whole journey. You just have to be ready for the next step." In this heartfelt episode, we explore the parallel between rookie seasons in baseball & the early stages of eating disorder recovery. Through a personal story about my 11-year-old son, I share with you powerful lessons about perseverance, finding purpose in setbacks, and recognizing God's work in challenging seasons. Whether you're just beginning your recovery journey or facing a difficult setback, this episode offers both spiritual encouragement and practical tools to help you step up to the plate with renewed confidence. Here are a few key points: Why setbacks in recovery are like strikeouts in baseball—necessary parts of the growth process The story of a young baseball player learning to value progress over perfection How God uses "rookie seasons" to develop dependence, resilience, and character The difference between the scoreboard mentality and the growth mentality in recovery Biblical perspectives on finding purpose in struggle and disappointment Transform your setbacks into stepping-stones by creating a Recovery Learning Log. After experiencing a slip in your recovery journey, ask yourself these three questions: What was happening right before I felt triggered? (Identify patterns) What need was I trying to meet through this behavior? (Uncover underlying issues) What's one small adjustment I can make next time I face this situation? (Build practical wisdom) This simple practice shifts your relationship with struggle from shame to growth and invites God into your development process. Your Path to Freedom: The Freedom Formula Experience with Lindsey Nichol THE PROBLEM: Trapped in the Cycle You wake up every morning with that familiar heaviness. Another day of obsessing over food, second-guessing every bite, and feeling like you're never doing recovery "right." Despite your best efforts, you feel stuck in an endless cycle: You're exhausted from constantly thinking about food and your body You feel like you should be "further along" in recovery by now Traditional treatment gave you tools, but you struggle to apply them in real life You're tired of having the same conversations with yourself day after day You're living in "the gap" – always focusing on how far you still have to go, never acknowledging how far you've come You feel isolated because nobody seems to truly understand what you're going through You wonder if complete freedom is even possible for someone like you The worst part? You're doing this alone. You're piecing together advice from books, podcasts, and social media, but without consistent guidance from someone who's actually walked this path, you keep falling back into the same patterns. THE SOLUTION: The Freedom Formula Experience! Girl, I've been exactly where you are. I know what it's like to feel trapped in an eating disorder, to try everything and still feel stuck, to wonder if you'll ever feel normal around food again. That's why I've created my 1:1 Recovery Coaching program – a personalized approach designed to help you break free from food obsession and finally experience the freedom you deserve. Unlike generic programs or traditional therapy alone, my coaching: Is tailored specifically to YOUR unique struggles, patterns, and recovery phase Combines practical tools with deep mindset work to address the root causes of your disorder Focuses on real-life implementation, not just concepts Offers consistent support between sessions when triggers and challenges arise Brings in the spiritual dimension often missing from traditional approaches Draws from my personal experience of complete recovery – I'm not speaking from theory, but from LIVING this transformation Through our work together, we'll untangle the complex web of your eating disorder – addressing not just the food behaviors, but the perfectionism, people-pleasing, and "never enough" mindset that keeps you trapped. THE TRANSFORMATION: What You'll Gain Working with me isn't just about stopping behaviors – it's about reclaiming your entire life. Here's what my clients experience: Freedom from the constant mental chatter about food, calories, and body size The ability to eat intuitively without rules, restriction, or compensatory behaviors A compassionate relationship with yourself, replacing the harsh inner critic Skills to manage difficult emotions without using food The confidence to show up authentically in relationships instead of hiding behind perfectionism A renewed sense of purpose beyond your body and appearance The ability to live in "the gain" – celebrating progress and practicing self-compassion The joy of redirecting all that mental energy toward the things that truly matter to you Imagine waking up and not having food be your first thought. Imagine enjoying meals with loved ones without anxiety. Imagine having the mental space to pursue your passions. This isn't just possible – it's what I help my clients achieve every day. Hey sis, welcome back to the podcast. Am I on one right now or what? I legit just got off a client call and I was talking to my client about what she feels is not working in her life right now. She said, I just have this constant nagging feeling that I'm not doing enough. I'm not enough. I'm not productive enough. Gosh does this resonate! I wanted to bring this in to the show content because I have been right where you are if you are feeling stuck with never feeling good enough. In fact, many days I feel like I'm not performing enough in my business, but when you're trapped in an eating disorder, you feel not thin enough. You feel not disciplined enough around food and honestly not good enough AT ANYTHING. And this feeling of never enough is like a shadow that follows you everywhere, friend. It is making you feel perpetually behind. Where you're constantly striving and never quite measuring up to this invisible standard. If you are nodding your head right now, then today's episode is for you. But before we dive in, I just wanna acknowledge that talking about these feelings can bring up a lot of emotion for you. Hey girlfriend, How dis your week beginning? I'd love to hear all the stories of how your spring is starting off! I spent the weekend recording the pod for you, practicing yoga with my hubby & having a movie night snuggled up next to the boys. But none of that is what I wanted to chat with you about today. Today, I wanted to dive right in to GUT HEALTH! So here it goes.... How is your gut? Weird question to ask right? Well, maybe not so strange after all. If you experience high levels of anxiety or stress, don't be surprised if that comes alongside gas, bloat or other gut health issues. Another fun fact... Did you know your gut is your 2nd brain? Yep! Research shows that your gut & brain are directly linked & it's actually very common if you are stressed or overwhelmed to experience GI disfunction. In Episode 203.5, I talk all things gastro, bloat, constipation & how you can tame those tummy troubles while navigating freedom from food controlling your life! The truth in recovery from disordered eating is that you most likely will experience stomach discomfort, but the good news is that it won't last forever. So if you are currently in the thick of it, then this one is a must listen! I'll meet you on the podcast! xo, lindsey Find All the Things -> www.herbestself.co ______ Coach with Me -> Client Application ______ Email me directly -> info@lindseynichol.com ______ Join the free FB community -> www.herbestselfsociety.com ______ Need a helping hand guiding you girl!? Hey there sis! Whew it has been a start to my week. Both of my boys are sick with something awful (negative flu and strep tests) but it has got this mama worn slam out! And it got me thinking what the doctor said..."it's time to get back to the basics mom." Huh? You want my kids to "just rest" and get better? No magic antibiotic that I can refill on our way home today sir? Sadly....Nope. ARGHHHH!!!! ~ This fun story (yet not really) gave me the inspiration to share on the podcast today about how important it is to go back to the basics when you may be in a recovery slump. Recovery isn't about becoming a different person sis, it's about reclaiming the person you were always meant to be. And gosh can I not wait for you to do that! (And I can't wait for my boys to get that much needed R & R themselves.) Your worth is not measured in your productivity. In Episode 202, I share with you the 8 fundamental and foundational human needs to reclaim your motivation for recovery. You won't want to miss this one. Hey girl! Happy Friday! Oh my gosh...am I so glad to talk with you today. In Episode 201 of the Her Best Self Podcast, we are diving in to 7 different ways that you can break the cycle of "Good Girl Syndrome". Never heard of it before? Tune in if you find yourself constantly striving for perfection and people pleasing...this one is going to blow your mind. I don't know about you, but I grew up in an environment of always wanting to be good. The fear of disappointing my parents or my figure skating coach led me right into the grip of an eating disorder because the desire to be perfect took over all areas of my life. But with if you decided to stop measuring success based on your accomplishments, appearance, or other peoples opinions of you? ~ Food is a basic right friend. You don't have to earn it. You don't have to be "good" with your food choices in order to be "good" as a person. You deserve nourishment, just because. How is your week going sis? I am in baseball mom mode over here. Yep, this past weekend we geared up for another season of travel baseball! I never thought I'd actually feel proud wearing bright yellow, as it's not really "my color"....(lol, Go Pirates!), but it sure was fun over the weekend spectating, screaming & living life in the present moment. When I sat down to bring content to you on the podcast today, I thought I MUST share all about identity. I recorded this one during last baseball season and it fits perfectly with my spring ball vibes! I was reminded of all the years that being outside of my normal weekend routine would have completely thrown me for a loop. I remembered how "tied" & "chained" I felt. I remembered how I wasn't able to enjoy the moments because I was consumed with thoughts about food. Thoughts like, "when can I eat next? what am I allowed to have? haven't I already had too much today? I guess I'll save my calories for later", & God forbid I went to a sporting event....I would have ordered a diet coke, secretly wanting a bite of anything other than my chewing gum, yet never allowing myself one. I probably would have spent majority of the game wondering how other people around me could even take one bite of their hotdog. I lived paralyzed by shame, guilt and fear. Maybe you can relate. What I came to find out, was that the only way I was ever going to escape my mind, was to realize it had been hijacked. I had to realize that I was not my anorexia. I didn't cause it. I couldn't control it. I couldn't cure it. BUT....I could no longer contribute to the patterns and the behaviors that were keeping me chained to it. In order to do just that.....I had to separate myself FROM my ED. In Episode 200.5, I share with you the importance of separating yourself from your eating disorder. I ask you questions for you to challenge yourself this week. Yep, you won't want to miss this one girl! Bring a notebook & a pen & listen in! And remember...YOU my sweet friend may have a disordered relationship with food, but you are NOT disordered. You are not broken! You are healing. You are a warrior. xo, lindsey Find All the Things -> www.herbestself.co ______ Coach with Me -> Client Application ______ Email me directly -> info@lindseynichol.com ______ Join the free FB community -> www.herbestselfsociety.com ______ Need a helping hand guiding you girl!? Hey there sister, friend~ I'm so glad to drop a new message of truth into your inbox today! I cannot wait for you to listen to Episode 200 on the Her Best Self Podcast. I don't even know how we got here. I feel like I blinked and we're at episode 200. This has to be the best project I've ever done outside of completely healing myself from a toxic relationship with food and my body for years. In Episode 200, I talk about your perfect weight, what it is, how you can find it, and ultimately how you can redefine what you're looking at in terms of measurement. We live in a culture obsessed with numbers on the scale. Magazine covers wellness influencers on Instagram and even healthcare providers push this idea that there's a magical number that will solve all of your problems. But what if I told you friend that your perfect weight has nothing to do with a number? Are you mind blown yet? Well, if you've been listening to the show for some time, you already have been preached at by me regarding this topic, so stick with me long enough and I will have you believing that you deserve a free life. But I wanted to start today's show with a question. How much mental and emotional energy do you spend thinking about your weight? Maybe it's a significant amount. I wanna ask a follow up question: Is it worth it? Is all that energy actually improving your life? Is it making you better? Is it making you worth more? Is it making you happier? Today, I wanted to offer a different perspective because I just felt this calling on my heart, not only to make Episode 200 freaking epic, because hey, that's why you're here is to listen to some good stuff that's actually gonna change your life. But to have you shifting your mindset a bit. Sis, what if your perfect weight isn't a number at all, but rather a state of being? You'll have to listen to the full episode for all the good parts of this message...
