If I walked up to you and asked you to write three four-letter words, what would they be? When I posed this question to a few people, I received many answers—but none included the word “kind.” Could this omission reflect a deeper erosion in our connection to a basic human need?
Human beings are unique. We possess both instinctual and learned behaviors. From birth, we instinctively embrace love.
Empathy, however, is learned through experience; it is the ability to feel with and for others and must be cultivated. It emerges when we are taught to consider the needs and feelings of others—when we intentionally imagine walking a mile in someone else’s shoes. Recognizing that others feel pain, desire, and need just as we do is essential to empathy. It teaches us to care about the condition and status of others.
Empathy that escalates into action is known as kindness. Kindness does not require grandeur. It can be as simple as a smile or as complex as building a dam over raging waters. Regardless of its scale, kindness is the natural response to empathy.
Yet too often our pursuit of progress pushes kindness aside. Humanity is driven by the need to conquer the earth, the sky, and even the stars, in a relentless struggle to satisfy its self-made desires:• We tear down forests to create farmland for our ever-growing population, while simultaneously constructing concrete jungles to house it.• We strip the earth of finite resources to fuel our technological conveniences, often without understanding the long-term consequences of their removal.• We launch satellites into the heavens at such an astonishing rate that it is hard to imagine the atmosphere not rebelling against this invasion.
While we chase progress, we risk neglecting the compassion that sustains the human community. When kindness is missing on a personal level, we feel it in small ways. But when it becomes absent on a collective scale, the consequences become devastating:
– What becomes of a nation that commits genocide without regard for the next generation? Where—and when—does it end?
– What is left for a people whose land is exhausted for the sake of technologies that give them little in return? Who will repair the damage?
– When did God invite humanity to become “guardians of the universe,” as they recklessly invade the heavens with unrecyclable trash?
In neglecting kindness—expressed through love and care for one another—we forget not only each other, but our divine purpose. Humans were not created to dominate and consume. We were created to care for this earth and one another; and to live in reverence to our Divine Creator.
Empathy requires that we feel the need of others. Kindness demands that we take action to resolve the need. But…IF HUMANS EVER REACH A POINT WHERE THEY FIND THEY ARE ALL IN THE SAME CONDITION OF N
