There’s only so much you can do in a week – or, according to Oliver Burkeman, in the roughly 4,000 weeks the average human lives. Oliver is a journalist and author of the books Four Thousand Weeks: Time Management for Mortals, Meditations for Mortals, and the newsletter “The Imperfectionist.” Chris and Oliver discuss the paradox of why change can only occur once we accept that we might not be able to change. Oliver also shares how life’s mishaps can become our most treasured memories and why sharing your imperfections is an act of generosity. Welcome to Infra Stories. Stories about places all across Nordics, where infrastructure projects with significant impact for the local communities have been built. Stories about innovative and sustainable solutions. Fighting against flooding in Roskilde, Denmark The city of Roskilde in Denmark is probably most famous for its annual music festival. 130,000 visitors enjoying eight days of live music until it inevitably rains, the festival floods and leaves everyone swimming in 80 hectares of mud. Unfortunately, the coastal areas surrounding the fjord just to the north of Roskilde, are suffering from a much more serious type of flooding. Residents in Jyllinge Nordmark are painfully aware of this: far too many of them have been left standing in water up to their waist when the fjord and local streams flood their homes. Sadly, this has happened several times over the past decade, resulting in flooded basements and costly damage. Basically, the future will see an increasing demand for reliable stormwater solutions. One of these coastal protection initiatives was a large new pumping plant supplied by Sulzer, a specialist in fluid engineering and pumping technologies for fluids. The plant was designed to send excess water from the River Værebro back into the fjord when the river breaks its banks. Kenneth Larsen, Technical Manager at Sulzer described the situation. “A system of this kind must not go wrong. When we put our solution out to tender, we specified that the structure had to be made of polyethylene plastic to withstand chemical influence from the very salty water passing through the system. The plant pumps were installed in a custom-made Wehopanel structure of polyethylene plastic delivered by Uponor Infra, which could withstand the water and has a design life of over 100 years. The highly durable Wehopanels developed by Uponor Infra can be dimensioned and equipped individually for countless applications, such as tanks, support structures, pumping station buildings and floating or submerged marine structures. In recent years, many innovative new products and structures have been developed using Wehopanel. Thank you Urbanistas for listening our stories! Once completed, it will become Poland’s largest station, with 120,000 passengers expected to pass through daily by 2030. Welcome to Infra Stories. Stories about places all across Nordics, where infrastructure projects with significant impact for the local communities have been built. Stories about innovative and sustainable solutions. We often take water for granted. It seems like a basic human right. But does this rather overlook the effort and cost that goes into providing clean water for a whole country? We spoke with Jyrki Laitinen to talk about the current situation regarding water supply and water quality in Finland. Jyrki is Head of the Unit of Sustainable Water Services at the Finnish Environment Institute. And what he had to say was rather concerning. Finland is a country that prides itself on clean drinking water. A country where you can drink from the taps, the streams and even lakes without too much cause for concern. However, a combination of factors could soon cause an increase in problems in Finland that would not only affect the availability of clean potable water, but also potentially cause sickness, and droughts. Welcome to Infra Stories. Stories about places all across Nordics, where infrastructure projects with significant impact for the local communities have been built. Stories about innovative and sustainable solutions. Today we travel to the Finnish town of Nastola which is trying to build a new community center in an environmentally sensitive location. The construction of a new community centre in Nastola, Southern Finland was proceeding at a rapid pace. Its new tenants were able to move into the building in early autumn 2021. The installation of the plot’s stormwater system was carried out at a rate that surprised everyone involved in the work. In fact, the site’s new Uponor IQ infiltration and retention pipes were in place within a few days. Installing pipe systems is bread and butter for municipal engineers, which naturally makes it even easier to install the IQ pipes. Once the pipe has been installed, it can be covered immediately, ready for the next one. The benefits of IQ pipes also include their long lifespan, up to 100 years, as well as their ease of serviceability and low maintenance costs. If necessary, the pipes can even be serviced with scrubber machines and vacuum trucks. Designer Simo Suurnäkki from Etteplan Oyj had never previously designed a stormwater solution using IQ pipes. “I contacted Uponor’s experts and got great support and help with the planning” he said. “The job was straightforward and went ahead with ease. One of the main advantages was the clear information on what load the pipes can withstand and how deep they need to be in the ground. Asphalted surfaces are becoming increasingly common, and the capacity of stormwater sewer networks is no longer sufficient. Real estate plots must have solutions that infiltrate and retain stormwater run-offs.” Thank you Urbanistas for listening our stories! Welcome to Infra Stories. Stories about places all across Nordics, where infrastructure projects with significant impact for the local communities have been built. Stories about innovative and sustainable solutions. Today we travel to the city of Norrköping, Sweden. Where the municipality is trying to filter contaminated stormwater before it gets to the Baltic Sea. Located at the mouth of the Motala River in Bråviken Bay, Norrköping is Known as the Manchester of Sweden. It’s an industrial city, a port on an inlet of the Baltic Sea, where former brick warehouses and mills perch dramatically on the edge of the city docks. It boasts a wealth of cultural and outdoor activities and interestingly has more ancient rock carvings than any city worldwide. But its beautiful location also brings some issues. As a municipality so close to the sea, it inevitably faces challenges when trying to reduce the number of pollutants released into its waters. Pollutants further inland in streams and rivers have time to be naturally filtered through ditches, gravel and sand. Unfortunately, in the case of Norrköping, we’re talking about a location right next to the Baltic Sea, one of the most sensitive and polluted seas in the world, and one which is particularly affected by eutrophication. An innovative solution. Giant Uponor Vaults stops untreated stormwater and give the Baltic Sea some breathing space. Thank you Urbanistas for listening! Welcome to Infra Stories. Stories about places all across Nordics, where infrastructure projects with significant impact for the local communities have been built. Stories about innovative and sustainable solutions. This is a story about wastewater treatment plant in Swedish village of Överklinten. When the existing ground-based wastewater system of the Swedish village of Överklinten was condemned, the residents needed to find a new solution and an Uponor Infra WehoPuts treatment plant was chosen. Because Överklinten is located upstream of groundwater wells, and the site is close to a local factory, it made for stringent requirements regarding purity, mechanical separation and the biological and chemical processes also had to be supplemented with a phosphorus trap to capture any excess phosphorus and UV-C radiation, preventing bacterial growth. Welcome to Infra Stories. Stories about places all across Nordics, where infrastructure projects with significant impact for the local communities have been built. Stories about innovative and sustainable solutions. This is a story about safe drinking water for an old shipyard and sawmill area. The Pateniemi waterfront area in Oulu, Northern Finland, has played a major role in the history of Finnish industrialisation. In the mid-19th century, its shipyard built large merchant vessels, and later it was the location of one of the largest sawmills of its time. Now the waterfront, which was in industrial use for over 100 years, is entering a new era with the completion of a residential area for 2,500 inhabitants. Uponor Barrier PLUS pipes – which are both durable and non-permeable – will ensure a safe supply of drinking water in this area. Thank you Urbanistas for listening!
