Financial Planner Luke Smith joined 2CC Talking Canberra in Money Matters, which aired live on Friday 18 July 2025. The topic for this week is: How much risk should I carry in my super fund? There’s often a big gap in the risk you think you’re carrying and the actual risk you are carrying. In this episode, Luke reflects on a client conversation he had in the past week and offers some information and practical steps you can consider when assessing the risk around your own retirement savings. Luke is of course joined by Leon Delaney of 2CC.

Thank you for joining us live on 2CC, YouTube or your favourite podcast streaming service with ‘The Strategy Stacker – Luke Talks Money’.

Key topics covered include:

  • Many people hear the word superannuation fund and think risk – that’s not right.
  • Instead think of super funds like vehicles, they all have different strengths and features – industry super funds, personal super funds, self-managed super funds.
  • What you do with the vehicle you have determines your level of risk.
  • Specifically, risk is determined by how your superannuation is invested determines risk – it’s called ‘your asset allocation’.
  • What is balanced? There’s no standard industry agreement or government regulation. A balanced label from one fund will have a different mix of growth and defensive assets to another!
  • How do I determine what my superannuation is invested in?
  • What are growth assets? What are defensive assets?
  • How else can you manage risk in your retirement savings?
  • What are the ways you can manage risk if you are approaching or already retired?
  • Luke takes a deep dive into asset class and investment diversification
  • Why being too defensive is also a risk.
  • Luke shares his top tips to consider when looking at risk in your super and retirement savings.

Risk management in your superannuation
Super is complex and without consideration, you might be taking more investment risk than you need to. Most Australian’s don’t deal with superannuation and retirement issues every day, like Luke does as a financial planner. Luke as a Financial Planner can help you set up a financial planning strategy to help you achieve your personal financial goals, including investment, super and retirement (including transition to retirement). Simply make an appointment to confidentially discuss your goals. Call Envision Financial Services on 6260 4749. You can use the contact us form to make an appointment, for a confidential discussion about your own goals and situation.

Luke will return to 2CC to talk about other ‘Money Matters’ next week, we hope you can join us. You can also catch up with ‘The Strategy Stacker – Luke Talks Money’ podcast at a time that suits you.

We look forward to your company again. Luke’s book Smart Money Strategy is out now.
