Chanel, Dior, Lagerfeld, Givenchy, Gaultier, darling. Names, names, names! Specifically, let’s focus on Dior and Chanel in Apple TV+’s new series “The New Look”. Christian Dior is a much-loved fashion icon, and this series opens up his portfolio and explores how French fashion houses, and names, names, NAMES survived during World War II, and what became of them in post-war Europe. Ben Mendelsohn’s somewhat fragile Christian Dior is set against Juliette Binoche’s exquisitely murky Coco Chanel, surrounded by other high fashion names, names, NAMES. It’s an interesting background to fashion houses that have permeated the modern world, allowing us a peak behind the runway. Who were they, what choices did they make, and what did they design for the world?

In this podcast Jill guides us through the twists and turns of Parisienne haute couture, while Dion seems to be pulling stuff off the clearance rack.

The New Look depicts Christian Dior in Paris after World War II when he created his fashion line that unofficially got named the “New Look” and his professional and ideological antagonism with well-established fashion designer Coco Chanel.
