The Italian citizenship landscape has been buzzing with discussions about a recent court case that recently went through the Court of Rome. This case has left many wondering about the future of Italian citizenship by descent. The case in question, Decision 17161 of June 15th, 2023, rendered by the Italian Supreme Court(Corte di Cassazione), revolves around the 1948 cases. This ruling relates to a subcategory of 1948 cases where the individual(s) have an Italian-born ancestor who became naturalized while their child, born in the U.S., was still a minor. The age of adulthood under Italian law changed in 1975 from 21 to 18 years.
