Today’s guest is a passionate entrepreneur, speaker, facilitator, and father. He is also a member and former Chapter President of the Entrepreneurs’ Organization whose entrepreneurial journey began at the age of 8 when he started working in the family business at their campground. Dan Lionello is the Founder & Facilitator of Painted Picture and the CEO & Founder at Omnae.com. Dan crushes the misconception behind leaders’ superhero complexes, shares how to overcome the imposter syndrome, and discusses the three roles of an entrepreneur.

Takeaways:

  • Entrepreneurs have three roles, the employee, the leader and visionary, and the owner. In order to grow their companies, they must figure out ways to wear the hats of all three roles while keeping the company on the right course.
  • The employee’s role is to do the work and create value. The role of the leader and visionary is to learn, delegate, and determine strategy. The role of the owner is about growing the value of the asset to create the highest possible value for shareholders.
  • When entrepreneurs “buy themselves a job” where they are deeply “in” the business and need to perform at an operational level to generate revenue, they decrease their ability to take up the role of owner and increase the asset’s value.
  • When you put your ego aside and have real conversations about how you feel about your role, you can gain a better awareness and larger perspective of what needs to happen in order for the company to grow.
  • Many entrepreneurs begin as technicians and accidentally become a salesperson when they sell to a client for their first job. The next evolution comes when they have generated demand and need to build out a team.
  • There is always another challenge and learning opportunity around the corner and you need to embrace that as part of the entrepreneurial journey. It’s rarely a straight line to success, you’ll make mistakes along the way but that’s just part of the adventure.
  • To optimize your own growth and learning, become intentional about what and how you are learning. Look to the future and ask yourself what you’ll need to know then, so you can start your learning process now.

Quote of the Show:

  • “Entrepreneurship is a series of learning curves, which means it's a series of putting ourselves into a zone of discomfort and needing to learn to become comfortable in that zone of discomfort” - Dan Lionello
