Generations are shaped by their experiences, and for Gen Z, that includes their exploration into new flavors and foods. While previous generations stuck to basics like pizza and pasta, Gen Z is seeking out food from around the world. From Indian street snacks to South African braai, Gen Z is willing to try anything-- once!
The trend can be seen in the restaurant industry as more chefs put fusion and global flavors on the menu. Restaurants like Chicago’s Bombay Breakdown specialize in a mix of East and West cuisine and are packed with Gen Z diners. There’s also an increased interest in more exotic ingredients as well — items like lemongrass, tumeric, and even durian fruit are being embraced by this generation.
This openness to new flavors isn't limited to restaurants either -- it's trickling down into home cooking too. The rise of subscription boxes offering pre-chopped ingredients with recipes that guide cooks through international dishes has made it easier than ever for Gen Z to cook up global meals at home.
