Character death it’s hard, not hard like it’s hard to die in 5E (It really is) but hard in that, your players are emotionally invested in their characters and (if you’re doing a good job running) in other players’ characters. This is a make-it-or-break-it moment for the DM. How you handle the death of a character is equally important to how you do NOT handle the death of a character.

These are the talking points:

  1. DON’T HAVE DEATH BE MEANINGLESS.
  1. DON’T HAVE THEM ROLL A NEW CHARACTER AT THE GAME TABLE.
  1. DON’T RIP UP THE CHARACTER SHEET (DICK MOVE).
  1. DON’T LET THE PARTY LOOT THE CORPSE OF THEIR FALLEN FRIEND (DICK MOVE AGAIN).
  1. DON’T APOLOGIZE FOR THE CHARACTER DEATH.

And that’s 5 things a GM should not do when a character dies. We’ll see you next time, in the Dojo
