Artist, curator and researcher Daniel Baker about art, cultural heritage and his utopia for Europe

“I make shiny things” is Daniel Baker's answer to the question about his work. Daniel Baker is an artist, curator and researcher, living in London. The Roma visual culture is his main source of inspiration and he is fascinated by what he calls “Gypsy Aesthetics”. We talk to him about art as a form of resistance, about cultural heritage in Roma communities, about an emerging Roma academic elite, about what the majority societies can learn from Roma – and of course about his utopia for Europe. Our Guest: Daniel Baker is a Romani Gypsy, born in Kent, he holds a PhD on the subject of Gypsy aesthetics from the Royal College of Art, London. Daniel Baker curated the exhibition FUTUROMA at the 58th International Art Exhibition at the Venice Biennale in 2019. He acted as exhibitor and adviser to the first and second Roma Pavilions “Paradise Lost” and “Call the Witness” at the 52nd and 54th Venice Biennales respectively. His work can be found in collections worldwide. Baker worked as Visual Advisor for RomArchive – Digital Archive of the Roma and he is Former Chair of the Gypsy Council. ** www.danielbaker.net** https://eriac.org/futuroma/ https://www.romarchive.eu/en/visual-arts/contemporary-roma-art/
