Are Men Lonelier Than Women? with Dr. Greg Matos
Manage episode 373807636 series 3297916
You might remember today's guest as the author of the viral 2022 Psychology Today article, “What’s Behind the Rise of Lonely, Single Men." Written by Dr. Greg Matos, the article received a lot of attention, especially from some angry men.
So, who is Dr. Greg? He is a board-certified couple and family psychologist based in California. Dr. Greg has an interesting background as he was trained as a military psychologist in the US Navy. In 2021, he founded A Better Love Project, an educational charity that shares relationship science and practical dating and relationship tips.
In our conversation, we got into a lot of juicy topics like why many women today are choosing to be single or if they are dating, how they’ve raised their standards, and are much more selective in who they date. We also talked about the increase in situationships, and why some guys are more interested in casual flings vs. long-term, committed relationships. What I found interesting was that some guys prefer casual hookups yet there's a loneliness epidemic, in which a lot of men struggle with feelings of isolation. It would seem to me that hookup culture doesn’t necessarily promote real connection or mitigate feelings of loneliness. Even though it's contradictory, it's what a lot of people are experiencing today.
This episode packs a lot of food for thought.
Enjoy!
