The Nutmeg’s Curse with Alexandra Sundarsingh
Manage episode 341665338 series 2882305
Kristen and Kyla are joined by food, migration, and labour historian Alexandra Sundarsingh in a reading of The Nutmeg’s Curse: Parables for a Planet in Crisis by Amitav Ghosh. From the publisher; “The Nutmeg’s Curse argues that the dynamics of climate change today are rooted in a centuries-old geopolitical order constructed by Western colonialism.” Lex, Kristen, and Kyla discuss more abstract ideas of ethics than usual, including the difference between vitalistic and mechanistic viewings of the world, how the history of colonialism and resource domination can be traced through to the race-based climate issues of today, and how important it is to understand our past in order to fully recognize our present and envision a better future. A great discussion on ethics even if you have not read the book (although it’s worth a read!)
