Is Canada really bilingual? Do English-speaking Canadians actually learn French? Why do Canadians need to learn French to accomodate a minority of people? What can we do to address the lack of French teachers across the country and improve students' engagement? So many questions come up when we think about the status of French in Canada. There are no easy answers. In this episode, I want to offer another perspective on a statement that can be heard often in the mouth of Anglophone Canadians: "It's unfair that we have to learn French. And it's useless because English is a global language." Beyond that I'm sharing the key element you need to get started on your path to learning a new language and maintaining your motivation.

  • Introduction
  • 3:55' | 2 pieces of legislation specific to Quebec, language laws bill 101 and 96
  • 8:51 | A fundamental problem with bilingualism in Canada
  • 14:58 | Why asking “How do we motivate kids at school to learn another language (namely French here in Canada)?” isn't the most pressing question (and what is a better question (17:06))
  • 21:43 | How do you start and keep the momentum on the path to bilingualism, especially when you already speak English?
  • 25:45 | Another way to think about fair/unfair on the topic of bilingualism
  • 29:42 | Less tests but more culture- and pop-culture-oriented language training please!
  • 35:19 | 3 types of learners and what they have in common
