Middle School Cadets Remember 9/11 (Part 3 of 3)

Middle School Thoughts

On 9/11/2019 one of our 8th grade cadets read the following:

“On this day we remember those that have sacrificed for our freedoms and specifically those that lost their lives on September 11, 2001. On that fateful day the United States was attacked by terrorists and, through those actions, began our involvement in the Global War on Terror. Here we are, 18 years later, and we still are engaged in combat in Afghanistan and Iraq. While there are discussions between our government and the Afghan government about a withdrawal of our troops, we still have our young men and women embroiled in conflict. This Global War on Terror that we have been engaging in is the longest running conflict in the history of the United States Military. If we add the major military conflicts of the US Civil War (4 years), World War I (2 years), World War II (4 years), the Korean War (3 years), and the Vietnam Conflict (3 years) together it totals to 16 years which is less total time in conflict that our current involvement in the Global War on Terror. Honoring those that have fallen and those that are still in harm’s way is a small token of the appreciation we have for the freedoms they have paid for with their sacrifices. Our service members are struggling with the loss of brothers and sisters in arms, with post-traumatic stress disorder, and for some life altering injuries. Our military families are struggling with the loss of loved ones or the care of those that return injured. Throughout this day, and every day, remember that freedom isn’t free and that there are those who purchase our freedom for us – sometimes with their lives.”
