A metaphor for the often intangible impediments, obstacles, and roadblocks that prevent women and minority groups from achieving the elevated professional success they may be capable of, Linda Fisk, CEO of LeadHERship Global, speaks about the glass ceiling and how to break it.

Q&A with Linda:

Q . What are some mistakes people make that keep them from breaking through this glass ceiling?

A. My first recommendation is to raise your sensitivity to this.

Did you know both male and female managers are twice as likely to hire men over women? We have to become aware of our implicit and explicit biases and guard against them, for example, when recruiting, use blind applications.

Q. How can people be more assertive in a way that doesn't switch off the person they're trying to educate?

A. Oftentimes we are blind to our own biases; we don't recognize the biases we operate under.

What you can do:

1. Raise your sensitivity. Identify any glass ceilings you may be creating in your own organisation.

2. Conduct blind screenings when recruiting.

3. Hold regular bias and stereotype training.

4. Have a sense of curiosity and respect for the differences among people.

When people recognize that you're curious and respectful, respecting their differences and trying to deepen your own understanding of those differences, it can lead to wonderful dialogue and opportunities for learning. It can deepen not just understanding, but respect for the differences we all have.
