Author, Touching Greatness
This week, Ira spoke with Southern California-based sportscaster Ted Sobel, author of the evocative Touching Greatness. In this play-by-play episode of Ira’s Everything Bagel, Ted talks about growing up in a special time in Southern California; his friendship with Dave Hull, the L.A. air personality who encouraged him to pursue broadcasting studies at Los Angeles City College, which led to his long career in the field; his early days as a student covering the Los Angeles Kings, and his fight to be taken seriously by the team’s public relations director; the best advice his father (who he wrote the book for) gave him, “It’s who you know, kid”; meeting his first legendary sports figure, Elgin Baylor; other greats he has met, including John Wooden, Jerry West, Bill Russell, Shaquille O’Neal, Phil Jackson, Sandy Koufax, and Joe DiMaggio; why sports is like a daily drama; being involved with the best; why he included many pictures in the book of sports greats he worked with or met; and his favorite Ted Williams story.
A multi-Golden Mike Award winning Southern California-based sportscaster reporter, Ted Sobel has covered, seen, and experienced a lot through his decades as a radio broadcast legend on several of L.A.’s most historic stations: KFWB, KNX, and KMPC. Currently with the Sports USA network, Sobel was raised in a city and in an era of broadcast greats, including Vin Scully, Chick Hearn, and Dick Enberg (among others), as well as befriend or work with them all.
