In this episode of The Inclusive Dad podcast, host AAron sits down with counselor and coach Kathy O’Connell to explore the intersection of disability, inclusion, and dating. Kathy, who lives with cerebral palsy, shares her personal journey of self-advocacy, navigating early exclusion, and eventually finding love. Together, they unpack the challenges people with disabilities face in building meaningful relationships, from confidence to rejection, and even the impact of sexual ableism. Listeners will walk away with practical strategies for creating inclusion in everyday life, while also being reminded of the power of self-acceptance and courage in pursuing authentic connection.

Key Takeaways:

Self-inclusion matters – True inclusion begins when we give ourselves permission to belong.

Confidence builds connection – Confidence helps overcome stigma and opens doors to relationships.

Rejection reframed – Rejection is about preference, not personal worth.

Disability disclosure – Sharing openly early on saves time and strengthens authenticity.

Sexual ableism harms – Challenging the belief that people with disabilities can’t be partners is essential.

Kathy O’Connell’s definition of inclusion:

Inclusion means to live a full life. It's about doing what you want to do in life and pursuing your dreams, your path, and creating inclusion for yourself along the way.

Kathy O’Connell’s Bio:
