Remember when Cosplay was about having fun and being expressive? Is it still? I’m not a makeup artist, nor am I great at any one skill that goes into Cosplay. But, I do find that the creators inside of the industry are very interesting and expressive with what they create. It’s something that I strive to create the time to do.

For me, production is the creative outlet. I enjoy editing the audio and video and putting everything together. Is it perfect? No, but it’s about my message and what I can share with my audience. In that way, Cosplay is the niche that I’ve chosen. You can always learn more, and develop more skills. Very appealing.

Understand that expression can be in different forms and formats. It isn’t just re-creating a movie-perfect replica of a costume and making yourself look like an exact copy from that movie. That may be an end-goal. In creating, you may find yourself, or what you truly want to do with your free time or all of your time – expression often leads to passion or shows others what your passion is.

It’s about messaging, focus, and being clear on what you do. It’s art. Creators are sometimes looked at as impractical or unproductive, but it’s what you felt you wanted or needed to do – and you shared that with others. Nothing wrong with that – whether it’s a message, what you feel strong about, or if it is less straight-forward – you realize something else in creating or re-creating a fandom building a cosplay.
