So much of life for a high school student seems to pass them by. This podcast hosted by faculty members of Livingston Christian Schools seeks to equip students to not let truth pass them by on any number of contemporary issues.
So much of life for a high school student seems to pass them by. This podcast hosted by faculty members of Livingston Christian Schools seeks to equip students to not let truth pass them by on any number of contemporary issues.
This is a continuing discussion with one of LCS' seniors along with LCS' own history and government teacher, Ms. Z, about their experiences at a recent political rally held in Livingston County as President Joe Biden visited Howell, Michigan.
As a school we have high expectations for our students. We have the pleasure of seeing most of them live up to these high expectations. However, there are people that are exposed to our students who are surprised but what they see. This episode portrays just such a reaction. Way too many people are talking at each other and few are listening well. The accepted norm today is that louder is more correct. We all know that this is not the case. The viewpoint that we espouse with greater volume while talking over someone else may indeed not be laced with truth, certainly not with kindness. Where has civility gone in our time? It seems as allusive as a tax being repealed by any level of government. Thankfully, there is a glimmer of hope. Once again, the youth are beginning to emerge as having some solid things to say and in a way that we should listen to them. Listen as one of our students shares an experience in which he had the opportunity to talk with people outside of his normal circles and the reactions to a high school senior respecting those he engaged on such taboo topics as politics and religion. He dared to speak and listen with civility!…
At the beginning of the school year Livingston Christian Schools' high school students take a retreat as a kick-off event. Bags are packed, then vans and a trailer are loaded to then carry everyone attending to Gull Lake Conference Center near Kalamazoo, MI. For three days the students are exposed to a spectacular setting with phenomenal facilities and food that is second to none! Here they are challenged from God's word to consider how they may fill their spiritual tank with not mere godly words, rather, God's word, that which is the truth. We have a conversation with two student participants to have them relive their experience and share the difference that it made for them and the long term affects it has on the student body.…
From a saxophone playing high school student to a loving husband and father of three daughters, Chef Dave DelCorvo has experienced anything but a boring life! His culinary journey started with making pizzas and then took him through a number of different dining establishments eventually finding his way to culinary school. Several times along this trip people “saw something” in him that afforded him more opportunities. Jesus Christ saw something in him too. Chef DelCorvo has dedicated his life to serving people and now seeks to creatively pass on his love of all things food and work related to his students at Livingston Christian Schools where the kitchen is his classroom and a gateway to skills and challenges that will last a lifetime.…
This is an extended conversation with Pastor Mark Hovermale and two current students, Katy and Ethan, discussing their journeys with anxiety and depression.
A very recent study conducted by the C.S. Mott Childrens Hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan in March of 2020 found that, among other unintended consequences of the responses to COVID-19, that 46% of parent respondents indicated that their teens manifested signs of depression or anxiety. This indicates that nearly 1 in 3 teenage girls and 1 in 5 teenage boys suffer from some form of anxiety or depression. These are staggering numbers! Livingston Christian Schools is hardly immune from this. By and large this is a topic that is coming out of the darkness and people are talking about it. This episode includes Pastor Mark Hovermale, himself someone who battles this, along with 2 current students at LCS, Katy and Ethan. Each of these people bravely share their own stories of how they live with the effects of anxiety and depression and how a relationship with Jesus, the Bible, and LCS each play a part in the management of this reality of their lives.…
At the literal formation of this country there was a toolbox of resources, if you will, essential to proper sustainability of the founders’ vision. This is otherwise known as The Constitution of the United States of America. Rarely does a craftsman have only one tool that makes them excel at their profession. A vital tool in that toolbox was a provision to help ensure that its citizenry had protections for certain rights presumed for all free people, the 2nd Amendment. Often misunderstood and misrepresented, this amendment remains vital for our freedom. Attorney and constitutional scholar Kerry L. Morgan joins the podcast to discuss the importance of people to know and understand this.…
Mrs. Highfield and her entrepreneurial 4th graders take us on a journey through how they championed healthy tenants of capitalism to impact their culture. Through the use of micro-businesses these 9-11 year olds raised a significant amount of money to help people literally around the world who are in need. Their pure motives of wanting to be the hands and feet of Jesus will encourage you. How Mrs. Highfield keeps them grounded in God’s word and encourages them to think beyond themselves will challenge you.…
This is the continuation of a conversation with two Youth Pastors, Mark Hovermale and Jack Janigian, regarding long term spiritual connectivity of both middle school and high school students.
In our immediate gratification culture, at times it is a challenge to think long term. Education of any kind is about incremental knowledge and application. For many people formal education may stop after high school. Unfortunately, there are statistics that point to this being a reality, spiritually speaking, for people too. Pastors Mark Hovermale and Jack Janigian join Ms. Z. and Pastor Mavin to discuss how they are trying to change this trend with their students.…
From growing up with the Mob in Rochester, NY to joining the Pom Team at Howell High School, Mrs. Stacey O’Keefe has quite a story to tell. Listen as Mrs. O’Keefe shares how God walked her through dating, faith, vocation, and cancer, and how He is now using her experiences to teach us all the power of God's grace.…
A temperature check is a helpful way to see whether things in the body are functioning as they should. In this episode, Ms. Z. and Pastor Mavin check the temperature of Livingston Christian School’s effectiveness in preparing its graduates spiritually, academically, socially and emotionally for life after high school.
