Welcome to Clairstone! In this episode, you will learn how to use the English words "develop" and "possibility".
TRANSCRIPT:
Hello everyone, my name is Jasmine, and you are listening to the English ClAIRSTONE Podcast, where you can build the cornerstone of your English vocabulary! For all our new listeners, welcome to the community, and for our regulars, hello again! Before we start, I will remind you that we upload new episodes twice a week and there are transcripts for each podcast episode in English, Arabic, and Spanish at our website projectclair.org, so go check that out if you want to follow along!

Today we will look at the words “develop” and “possibility”

The word “develop,” spelled D-E-V-E-L-O-P, is a transitive and intransitive verb. This means sometimes it takes a direct object but sometimes it does not. When it does take a direct object, it means to make something, make clear something in detail, or to consider the possibilities of something. For example, in the sentence “Carrie developed an idea for her project,” Carrie has thought about some ideas for her project then in detail created a clear idea.

The transitive verb “develop” can also be used with the object picture or photograph. To “develop a picture” is to expose the material of a photo to some chemicals which make the image appear on the material.

The last definition for the transitive verb “develop” is similar to the first definition. If something is developed, it is gained little by little or growing and expanding. An example sentence is “Betty developed her muscles week by week until she could lift a tire.”

The intransitive verb “develop,” which does not take a direct object, has the same meanings of growth, gain, and making that the transitive verb has. However, instead of taking a direct object to mean what is developed, the thing being developed is the subject of the verb. For example, instead of the last example sentence, it could be “Betty’s muscles developed each week by lifting weights.” This sentence has the same meaning but instead of Betty developing muscles, the muscles develop.

Next, the word “possibility,” spelled P-O-S-S-I-B-I-L-I-T-Y, is a noun. Something is a “possibility” if it is able to be done or able to happen. The thing being called a “possibility” is usually a condition or fact but it can also be an idea or abstract thing. An example sentence is, “Mary’s idea of drawing a new logo is a possibility for how to promote our business.”

Well, that is it for today’s episode! I hope you will start to use the words “develop” and “possibility” in your English practice, and I will see you next time! Bye, everyone!
