The mouth is the gateway to the body and that’s why it’s so beneficial to take the information we obtain during a dental exam and share it with the other medical professionals in our collaboration team. We know now that bacteria in the mouth can go beyond the mouth and into your arterial system, causing such problems as inflammation and plaque buildup in the arteries, which endangers other systems in the body, such as the heart.
The health of the mouth isn’t just about our teeth. It’s all connected, which brings us to the topic of inflammaging–the impact inflammation has on the aging process. Inflammaging is defined as the increase in the levels of inflammatory markers in the blood and tissue.
The public drives change, and that is why it’s advisable to be a proactive patient. Asking for specific diagnostics, such as a saliva test is part of taking charge of your own healthcare and maximizing the benefit of your clinic visits.
