Susannah Ray is a New York based photographer and professor. Her work focuses on the intersection of city and water and how New Yorkers' lives are shaped by the waters around the city. She has taught photography for 15 years and is currently an adjunct associate professor at Hofstra University. Her work has been exhibited at The Bronx Museum of the Arts, Benrubi Gallery and has been featured in numerous publications including The New York Times, The New Yorker, and The British Journal of Photography. Her monographs New York Waterways and Right Coast chronicle New York City's shorelines and its surfing culture, respectively.
In this conversation, Susannah talks about the four key steps of analyzing and decoding photographs as inspired by American critic, historian, and educator A.D. Coleman. She also Shares how to think deeply about making photographs, and many more peripheral conversations revolving around images.
