Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis is a 2016 memoir by JD Vance about the Appalachian values of his family from Kentucky and the socioeconomic problems of his hometown of Middletown, Ohio, where his mother's parents moved when they were young.
J.D. Vance (born August 2, 1984, Middletown, Ohio, U.S.) is best known as the author of Hillbilly Elegy (2016), a best-selling memoir of his experiences growing up as a member of the white working class that was published as the United States was roiling with division over the upsurge in populist support for Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump. A lawyer and venture capitalist, Vance parlayed the success of his memoir into a political career. He was elected as a Republican to the U.S. Senate in 2022, representing the state of Ohio.
