Value of Pre-Communication in Conversations: He acknowledges the merit in being sent questions before a conversation or interview. Even though his approach towards this has evolved, he recognizes that pre-communication can often lead to more thoughtful dialogue during the actual conversation. The Evolving Nature of Answers: Derek elucidates that one’s responses can evolve even in a short span of time. An initial answer might change or adapt upon further reflection, highlighting the dynamic nature of thought processes and the potential depth that can emerge from giving oneself time to think. The Fluidity and Evolution of Online Terminology: The conversation lightly touches upon how terms used on online platforms, like ‘tweet’, can become integrated into our vocabulary, and how there can be resistance or adaptation to changing these terms. Mick Ebeling founded Not Impossible, a multiple award-winning social innovation lab and production company, on the premise that nothing is impossible. His mantra of “commit, then figure it out” allows him to convene a disparate team of hackers, doers, makers and thinkers to create devices that better the world by bringing accessibility for all. This unconventional approach brought to life highly acclaimed initiatives -- the EyeWriter, Project Daniel, Don’s Voice and most recently Music: Not Impossible -- that brought the ability to draw back to a paraplegic street artist, 3D-printed arms to Sudanese amputees, a ‘voice’ to an ALS patient who hadn’t spoken in 15 years, and wearables that let deaf and hearing people alike feel music in a “surround body” experience. Ebeling’s book, Not Impossible: The Art and Joy of Doing What Couldn't Be Done, recounts the life experiences that led to the founding of Not Impossible. Published in a multitude of languages, the book was hailed as “a unique and inspiring tale of brave abandon” by Nicholas Negroponte. Key Takeaways: Staying true to values and ethics is important when facing challenges The company exists to create technology for the sake of humanity Despite difficulties, they have remained committed to their mission An opportunity presented itself and they took it, despite initial hesitation Helping even one person can make a difference and ego should not get in the way To learn more about the company, visit notimpossible.com or their social media channels. I talk to someone who has been called the “Toughest Woman Alive”. Get this, as a teenager, she got obsessed with kickboxing and became a world champion. Leah then spent 9 years in the Israeli commandos and secret police - becoming a Krav Maga Instructor for their Elite Commandos. And then upon retiring, she got into cycling… and in 2005 after winning 9 of her first 11 races, she was involved in a horrific crash that left her hospitalized for two and a half months and she was told she would never walk without a cane… let alone get back on a bike… But if that wasn’t enough, Leah recovered and started competing in the Race Across America (RAAM)... eventually winning the race having ridden 3000 miles, climbed 175,000 feet, crossed 12 states with a time of 11 days, three hours and three minutes… Now, if that’s not someone who can teach us a never-give-up attitude, I don’t know who can. Hoff has been called “The female Michael Phelps.” Former American Olympian, she is multiple Olympic medalists and previously held world records in both the 200-meter and 400-meter individual medley. She competed in the 2004 and 2008 Olympic Games, winning silver medals at both. Katie is best known for her individual medley, and she holds the current American record for the 400-meter individual medley and previously held the American records for the 200 individual medley, 200 freestyle, and 400 freestyle. In July 2014, Katie experienced a sharp pain in her chest and sides, which forced her to withdraw from the National Championship. She initially had been diagnosed with a muscle strain and asthma when a CAT scan revealed two blood clots in her lung. Due to the buildup of scar tissue in her lung caused by the blood clots, Katie officially announced her retirement from swimming in 2015. Hoff said being compared to Phelps was an honor – which she didn’t discourage at the time because it made her feel special. By not winning any gold medals, though, “the way that it framed my 2008 Olympic Games was in a negative light,” Hoff said. “Looking back, it wasn’t the best meet of my life, but it was a solid meet, so that was a hard pill to swallow. Hoff explains that "Eight gold medals wasn’t in her blueprint, as much as she wishes it was.." At the end of the day, Katie says she is in a much better place now and has peace. She’s also found a career doing motivational speaking, which she loves. Katie brings the energy and charisma you associate with an elite athlete - coupled with the friendly charm and straight talk of a good friend. She spent fifteen years relentlessly driving her own performance in competitive swimming from local star to national darling to international champion in her sport. What does it take? Katie will tell you. Please help me welcome to the We Do Hard Things Podcast, Katie Hoff. Hey there, I'm Mark Drager. Today’s guest was homeless at 15, for 5 long years before one day, in total despair and desperation, someone stepped into his life and gave him the greatest gift, hope. Over the next decade of his life, he became a master salesperson, moved overseas, took a company from $5mm to $1b, then lost it all, rebuilt, was knighted for his charitable work, lost it all again, rebuilt again... now, he’s an actor, movie producer, and his film, Legacy of Lies has been in the Netflix top 10 for weeks. How did this man go from an unschooled homeless teenager to an author, television host, actor, action-movie producer, and wildly successful Entrepreneur? You have to hear this story. But as a boy, his dad took off and wasn’t a part of his life, by the age of 10 he was grossly overweight at 250lbs, he was bullied and beaten up and hospitalized… Later, he became so aggressive in life and in business that he was kicked out of the companies he was a part of… and he was living with so much stress that one night woke up, having ground his teeth so hard in his sleep that he cracked everything on one side of his jaw… How did this man go through all of these struggles, facing rejection and loss, and then go on to have the most tremendous success - only to find himself, completely unhappy? Today’s guest is an extreme distance swimmer who was told in his early 50’s that he was going to die. That the Lymphoma and Leukemia that was attacking his body would win out. Then, just before his 30th wedding anniversary his wife who was also battling a terminal illness, suddenly died. And in that dark period, when he felt he had nothing to live for he found an inner strength, he refused to accept a death sentence, and against doctors orders took matters into his own hands. There’s a quote from Albert Einstein that reads, "There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle." Our next guest believes that adopting this quote as a standard to live by not only saved his life, but put the pieces into place to win the fight against Lymphoma and Leukemia, as well as help put his life back together. I can’t wait to share with you the conversation I had with the man who may have cured himself of cancer through cold-water swimming - Dean Hall. Today’s guest is a prolific serial entrepreneur. Now, I don’t have another way to say that but even that doesn’t do justice to his accomplishments in a really short amount of time. Over the past decade plus, he’s launched and sold a break-neck number of startups - within technology and business services, marketing, health, and now a retail food chain with 25 locations. Our guest went to law school to become a sports agent but at the advice of his personal mentor David Meltzer - was encouraged to start his first company during the great recession. Since then, he’s become a startup/business scaling expert and his current ventures, Everbowl and Superfuel Coffee are taking the market by storm. And while it’s easy to shrug off his accomplishments to personality, luck, or well-connected friends - that’s not the case at all. Our guest learned hard lessons the hard way, faced failed ideas and business launches, and came to learn that his real secret to success was through the relationship capital he built up with peers and the business community. Get ready for the conversation that actually changed how I look at business myself - please welcome to the We Do Hard Things Podcast entrepreneur and very cool guy, Jeff Fenster. Today’s guest is a serial entrepreneur who was raised in poverty, so much so that at one point he was homeless, AND...has also gone onto build up multiple 8-figure businesses. Now, what I appreciated most about having the chance to speak with him, is that he’s not just talk. He’s started from nothing. He’s built and lost. He’s seen success and major failure. And he carries that into everything he does. Whether it’s as a best-selling author of the book, The Journey Principles, the creator of the life-changing program Transformation U, or as the man who helps people get over the excuses and build massive success. He believes, “People are not living a life they love, not because they’re not capable of it, but because they don’t know how to get there.” With appearances on NBC, CBS, Entrepreneur, Thrive Global, Grit Daily, and more, our guest has taken over three decades of setbacks, failures, breakdowns, losses, successes, and comebacks to create simple-yet-effective step-by-step lessons. I can’t wait to share with you the insanely inspiring talk I had with the man who can help anyone reclaim their hope and go from stuck to unstoppable, Stephen Scoggins. Today’s guest is a formal Navy SEAL and a former FBI special agent. During his 13 years with the FBI he investigated International Terrorist Organizations, was a part of the FBI’s New York SWAT Team, was also attached to the United States Army’s 75th Ranger Regiment through the FBI, for which during his deployment in Afghanistan he was presented with the FBI’s second highest award for valor, the Shield of Bravery. Now, as the founder of the leadership training organization, Leader 193 he spends his time not training, but empowering. Today’s guest is an endurance athlete with a zest for adventure. That zest has taken her from struggling to finish a local fun-run and learning how to swim as an adult; to completing 18x Ironmans, including finishing 2nd in her age group at the world championships in Kona. But if that wasn’t enough, her thriving coaching business saw her ride a wave of success until the day she found the anxiety and panic attack-inducing stress of running her business brought her to the edge of losing it all. But facing the challenges and learning lessons the hard way, she was able to rebuild and went on to participate in what’s arguably the world's toughest adventure race: Eco Challenge Fiji. Now, if you’ve had a chance to watch the race on Amazon Prime, you’ll know why I wanted to speak with her. Her openness, dogged determination, and the fact that she’s a self-proclaimed “tough chick” makes her totally one of a kind. I can’t wait to share with you the conversation I had with this mother, athlete, and host of the new podcast “Tales of Toughness” - Sonja Weick.…
