We’ve all had a moment where we arrived at the grocery store and can’t remember passing any of the stoplights along the way. We’re halfway down an aisle and scrambling to remember what we even needed. Our mind is in overdrive trying to sort through our ever-growing to-do list. We’ve been there when just making it through the next task is hard. But the normal stresses of life aren’t the only thing YOU have to deal with. Dear Mama, What if I told you Black mamas aren’t superheroes, that the cape is choking us, and our backs are brittle? What if I told you motherhood ain’t killing us, though, but the narratives we buy into hook, line, and sinker are? What if you had the option not to be the primary custodial parent? Would you decline out of obligation to the belief that a good Black mama would never choose to leave their children in the care of others, even the other parent? How does a Black mother respond when what’s best for her or her destiny clashes with cultural norms? In this Mother’s Day episode, I shared my journey with Dem Black Mamas Podcast about the complexities and challenges of non-custodial parenting and Black motherhood. When Erica and her husband decided to divorce, they also agreed to shared custody. Each parent would have primary custody for 3 years of their son Maxwell who was diagnosed with spastic quadriplegic cerebral palsy 10 years ago. We dive into: Confronting societal norms and cultural stigmas Navigating health and care decisions for children with special needs as a noncustodial parent Historical trauma and Black motherhood Renegotiating Black motherhood Connect with Dem Black Mamas: YouTube | Email List | Patreon | Blusky 🗣️Engage: This is a conversation. Today's episode is a two part episode where we discuss adoption and second trimester loss. Today's guest Dr. Tatiana Height wanted to become a mother through private adoption as she was single at the time. During this time she faced alot of judgement from people about trying to adopt instead of carrying a biological child. If you haven't listened to part 1 please go back to Episode 383 to listen. In this episode we discuss her finding out she was pregnant, her second trimester and miscarriage loss story, her 3rd failed adoption, and her grief and healing journey. We discuss how the third mom changed her mind the day the baby was due. Her due date was right at the same time as Tatiana was entering her second trimester, so she put her adoption plan on hold to focus on pregnancy. At 19 weeks and 3 days, her water broke and she gave birth to a baby girl, but she didn't survive. 10 months later she got pregnant again, but miscarried around 6 weeks, and she is now trying to adopt again. We made it yall! We have made it to the end of the year, and I’m happy to say we made it whole. Many of us started this year with the expectation of greatness. Ambition to take on the world. Start that new business, write that new book, launch that new product, travel to a new country, and just live a life after loss that was unimaginable. Then our world was paused in March as COVID-19 shut down the world, travel, and many businesses especially small businesses. Many of our family and friends have been diagnosed with COVID-19, recovered, or even worse have gone to be angels in heaven. 2020 has been the year of the Unexpected! In this solo episode I talk about the year in review, my personal and professional goals, and my 2021 word of the year. Sisters in Loss Podcast: Miscarriage, Pregnancy Loss, & Infertility Stories

We have entered into a new year, and a new decade. Another opportunity to live out our purpose for our lives, for our angel babies, and future babies. It is a time to continue on the journey to healing, restoration, with hope and peace. In today’s episode I share my word of the year and a recap of all that was accomplished with Sisters in Loss in 2019 and my goals for 2020 for the podcast and business. Resilience means the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties; toughness. the ability of a substance or object to spring back into shape; elasticity. Resilience means knowing how to cope in spite of setbacks, or barriers, or limited resources. Resilience is a measure of how much you want something and how much you are willing, and able, to overcome obstacles to get it. It has to do with your emotional strength. After losing babies many times we don’t even know our own strength. But we keep on getting up, placing our feet on the floor, and pressing on time after time when it gets tough. We go two steps forward and 3 steps back. We move from trauma to trauma and not realize it until its too late. We get the positive pregnancy test we had been praying for only to get bad news weeks later. We make it the end of our pregnancy, birth our rainbow baby, and are depressed because we continue to mourn the baby we lost. When I think of resiliency I think of you. Yes, you girl. Yes, you my Sister in Loss. You continue to press on, recover quickly, and have the emotional strength to overcome life’s obstacles and challenges. You have made it your mission to help others on this journey. You have dedicated your life back to Jesus to serving him until your husband and future children get here. Resilience is you! Resilience is me! Have you heard of male factor infertility? Male Factor infertility can be caused due to low sperm production, abnormal sperm function or blockages that prevent the delivery of sperm. Illnesses, injuries, chronic health problems, lifestyle choices, and other factors that lead to infertility. Today’s guest shares her recurrent miscarriage story and journey where her husband is experiencing secondary infertility by way of male factor. Tamika Henderson had miscarriages in 2016, 2017, and 2018, and it became so routine she knew she was miscarrying. Miscarriage is on the ballot. We are less than one week away from election day on November 5. Have you voted early yet? Today's episode is a solo episode where I deep dive into the book writing process and detail where I am now in writing Never Healing Alone. I also discuss how miscarriage is on the ballot. After Roe v. Wade was overturned, the right to abortion access was left up to each state, which allowed states to ban abortion, or allowed existing abortion bans to become law, in places where Roe previously protected our rights. So, while the outcome of the presidential race could have a serious impact on abortion rights nationally, state candidates and ballot initiatives will also have a major influence over abortion access in specific states. Statewide ballot initiatives related to abortion access will be on the ballot in Nebraska, Arizona, Florida, Missouri, Vermont, Montana, South Dakota, Maryland, Colorado, and New York! Please go out and vote and I can't wait to share new updates on my book writing process in 2025. Have you heard of a transabdominal cerclage? What is a transabdominal cerclage? A transabdominal cerclage is a small, extremely strong, woven synthetic band stitched high on the cervix. This band supports the full length of the cervix and resists the pressure the growing fetus places on it. The band prevents the cervix from opening and losing the pregnancy. Today's guest experienced two chemical pregnancies over about a year and a half in the beginning of her marriage. Eventually through medical intervention, Jazmyne Scott was able to get pregnant with her son then she lost him in the second trimester due to incompetent cervix or cervical insuffiency. She was determined to have her rainbow baby. Jazmyne took control of her maternal health and researched doctors in Atlanta who could perform a transabdominal cerclage based on her being apart of the Abbyloopers facebook group. In today's episode Jazmyne takes us on the journey to advocating for herself to get a transabdominal cerclage, getting pregnant with her rainbow baby girl, birthing her baby girl and being a parent after loss. Sisters in Loss Podcast: Miscarriage, Pregnancy Loss, & Infertility Stories

Abortion and Elective Termination has always been a topic in the US, with many opposing views. Roe v. Wade was a 1973 landmark decision by the US Supreme Court. The court ruled that a state law that banned abortions (except to save the life of the mother) was unconstitutional. The ruling made abortion legal in many circumstances. On June 24, 2022, this Dobbs decision was overturned making abortions illegal in many states even as early as 6 weeks gestation. Abortion is on the ballot in less than 50 days to election day. In the medical world miscarriages are called spontaneous abortions, and in this community we have to learn how to extend grace to individuals who electively terminate their pregnancies no matter their choice. Today’s episode is a solo episode as I am sharing my own personal abortion story. I have never told this story on this podcast, and wanted to share my truth to release the hurt, embarrassment, and shame I have worked through with therapy and carried around with me so many years. August 19, 2004 is a day I will never forget. It is also a day I almost lost my life ten years later giving birth to my rainbow baby boy. This episode is for you to listen to learn more about the healing that takes place post abortion and loss.
