Happy, healthy people are more effective teachers and more productive members of society. Yet, an increasing number of teachers are suffering stress-related illness and burnout. Some of these educators struggle through at a reduced capacity, but quite a lot just leave the profession altogether. Many educators put everyone else's health and happiness before their own, because they just want to make a difference. However, it backfires because the external expectations and demands of the job keep increasing regardless of the dwindling reserves of teachers. This podcast aims to facilitate and contribute to the conversation about teacher wellbeing, positive schools and burnout prevention, to inspire and empower educators of all kinds to take back control of their health and happiness by being proactive about their wellbeing, and to give teachers permission to put themselves first, so that they can go on making a difference long into the future.

Happy 6th Birthday to the Teacher Wellbeing Podcast! It sure has been an amazing ride since I began the podcast in 2017. I could not have predicted where things would end up but I’m so proud of the 9 seasons that have been produced so far. In the time since I began the show, the teacher wellbeing industry has matured so much and is now mainstream in schools across Australia. And of course 6 years in and my personal and professional life look extremely different than when I started the show. In this episode I share a litte update! This is a brilliant conversation with Katrina Bourke, a good friend to the podcast who has been on the show several times before. We discuss leadership sacred ground, what it is, why you need it and how we find it. Katrina also shares the power of deep self-awareness and why it’s also important that we understand and accept our shadow sides. Plus, we talk about what gets in the way of showing up as the best leaders we can be and advice for new and emerging leaders too. The Authentic Leader Deputy Principals, this one’s for you! Have you heard of The Authentic Leader? It's an online community of learning and connection exclusively for female deputy principals who want to lead well and live well. The Authentic Leader is a safe space to connect with other women who really understand what you do. In this episode I am sharing with you a clip from the Resilient Teacher Roadmap online course, and it’s really the metaphor that underpins the roadmap, about approaching our resilience and wellbeing the way an engineer builds a bridge: knowing and planning for it to flood and designing the bridge accordingly, not building a flimsy bridge and praying it doesn’t rain. You can find the Resilient Teacher Roadmap course in my online shop at anytime https://selfcareforteachers.thinkific.com/courses/roadmap But I also want to invite you to join the Resilient Teacher Group Coaching Program, which starts on 29th January or 1st February, depending which cohort you join. It’s a 6 month group coaching program for teachers wanting support, encouragement and community in building their resilience and wellbeing in 2022. Enrolment is open now, head to selfcareforteachers.com.au/resilientteacher You heard Emma share in the previous episode how being a part of the Resilient Teacher Group Coaching Program helped her make some changes in her life and improve her wellbeing as a person and as a teacher. And I’d love to support you this year to do the same. So here’s a little snippet of my approach and my clients have found it a really valuable metaphor to help them reflect on their resilience and wellbeing, set goals and seek support when needed. Happy New Year teachers! In this episode of the Teacher Wellbeing podcast I have a fantastic chat with one of my past teacher clients, Emma. Emma shares so generously about the challenges she’s experienced with perfectionism, people pleasing and the martyr culture getting in the way of wellbeing. She’s spent a lot of time reflecting on this and unlearning these tendencies and shares some beautiful insights in this episode, including letting go of the need to be ‘super teacher’, recognising the difference between school-imposed deadlines and self-imposed deadlines, and the power of having trusted people to hold you accountable. Emma also tells us how a supportive principal and 2 supportive colleagues saved her teaching career, so I think it’s an incredible lesson that no matter your position in a school you can and do make a difference to the people you work with. The question is will it be a positive difference or not? There’s so much good stuff in this episode, including setting boundaries, the ancient Jewish practice of Sabbath, and giving yourself permission to do more things just for fun. Emma also shares a bit about her experience in the Resilient Teacher Group Coaching program, which is open for enrolment again right now. The Resilient Teacher is a 6 month group coaching program for teachers building their resilience and wellbeing in 2022. It’s 1 individual coaching session with me, and 12 fortnightly group coaching calls to support you throughout Semester 1 this year, beginning with a welcome call on Saturday 29th January 2022. Calls are held on Zoom so you can join from anywhere in Australia, on Tuesday evenings or Saturday mornings. In this episode of the Teacher Wellbeing Podcast I have a really interesting conversation with Gail Swift from Plans to Prosper Coaching . Gail is an educational guide and Kolbe Index Consultant who works with schools and teachers in the United States on bringing out their best when everybody is free to be themselves. Gail shares with us about something called conation, which the dictionary says is ‘the mental faculty of purpose, desire, or will to perform an action’. Gail explains how conation is different to cognition and also personality, but how all three are needed for success. We talk about how this plays out in classrooms and staffroom, and how understanding our ways of working can help us get along better. Gail shares some advice for school leaders trying to motivated disengaged staff, and we have a great chat about rethinking the way we approach staff meetings to make them more effective, efficient and engaging, which I’m sure is something we all want. Ultimately this episode is about closing the distances between us and building understanding, and learning to get along better in our families, teams and communities and I hope you enjoy this conversation with Gail! Reminder: now is a great time to put your name down on the waiting list to work with me when I come back from Maternity Leave in 2022. I’ll only be back part time so it will definitely be a case of first in best dressed and the waiting list for my 1:1 coaching or for the Resilient Teacher Group Coaching Program will be notified first when spots open up in my calendar: https://mailchi.mp/33f69a083043/work-with-ellen-waiting-list There is also a waiting list for School Wellbeing Champions too. In 2020 and 2021 I’ve run a number of meetups and workshops for School Wellbeing Champions, who are the amazing educators and staff members who are driving wellbeing initiatives from the ground up in schools. And in 2022 I plan to run some more of these, with options for both PD relating to wellbeing initiatives you can run in your school, and opportunities for networking, connecting and learning from Wellbeing Champions around Australia. In this episode of the Teacher Wellbeing Podcast I have a really valuable and vulnerable conversation with Laura, who you may know from Instagram as @educatinglaura or from her podcast, After the Bell . Laura is a high school teacher from Victoria and we recorded this while in lockdown so there is a little bit of background noise from her kids but we all know the realities of lockdowns these days, don’t we? Laura tells us about her journey overcoming the martyr syndrome that exists in our education culture, and how that really played out for her in her first several years of teaching. For example she tells us about the problematic beliefs she had that made it such a struggle to make a change like taking work emails off her phone and feeling the pressure to be available 24/7, as well as the huge difference it makes to have a Principal who understands and actively supports teachers wellbeing as people first and teachers second. Laura also tells us about a couple of big personal wake up calls that started to really shift her focus on herself and what really matters in her life, and I do want to just share a content warning that we touch on pregnancy loss in this episode so just be aware of that as you listen. Laura also tells us about what wellbeing looks like for her these days and her top tips for early career teachers, and she has some really great tips to share. Just before I get to the interview, I want to let you know that now is a great time to put your name down on the waiting list to work with me when I come back from Maternity Leave in 2022. This episode of the Teacher Wellbeing podcast is a fantastic interview with Meg Durham from Open Mind Education. Depending how long you’ve been listening, you may remember Meg from way back in Season 3, Episode 7 and I’m so thrilled to have her back on the podcast. Meg also has just launched a podcast of her own called School of Wellbeing, so do a search for that in your favourite podcast app and get listening to it too. In this episode Meg tells us about her journey over the last few years integrating wellbeing into her life, coming from a place of knowing a lot but having to learn to apply it in new and very challenging circumstances. We talk about the reality of the process of change being messy, how wellbeing plays out with teachers and schools, the importance of buy in from staff when you’re implementing school wellbeing programs and how long they really take to embed, plus the two approaches of proactiveness and learned helplessness that Meg and I have both observed. Meg then shares a framework that I’ve found so helpful and I hope you will too: she tells us about the 5 Ps that hold us back and the 5 Cs that help us change. It’s a brilliant conversation and I’m so excited to bring it to you. Welcome to Season 9 of the Teacher Wellbeing Podcast! Self-care is so often sold to us by Instagram influencers and companies that want to sell us goop to put on our faces as some lovely indulgence. But that's rarely been my experience. It's also not the kind of self-care that I advocate for, or that underpins my work here at Self-Care for Teachers. My experience of self-care, the kind that I've found most revolutionary in my life, that I teach my clients and that I see making a difference for them is the kind of self-care that is a bit of a chore. By the time you hear this, I will be on maternity leave, but this season of the Teacher Wellbeing podcast will be going out fortnightly while I’m in my baby bubble. I’ve recorded some great interviews for this season so I hope you enjoy them. Gentle reminder, dear teacher: You are NOT lazy, you are tired. There is a very real difference! In challenging times, it's normal to have less energy than usual. Our capitalist culture has conditioned us to connect our worth to our productivity, but your worth is NOT determined by how much you can get done. It's ok if you feel that you have less capacity right now, that's to be expected. You are NOT lazy, you are tired, and there is a very real difference. You are doing a good job in really tough circumstances AND it's ok if you're not as productive as usual. 7 strategies for looking after your wellbeing in lockdown The challenges of lockdown and remote learning have been a common topic of discussion in my coaching sessions with teachers in recent weeks. Here are some of the things they've shared that have been helpful for them: 1. Keep to a routine 2. Plan something to look forward to daily 3. Take a break from social media 4. Get outside/get fresh air 5. Express the mix of feelings that come up 6. Help others 7. Give yourself self-compassion Have you tried any of these? Announcement: I’m pregnant and taking some maternity leave from mid September 2021! Therefore, not sure if I’m doing another regular season of the podcast this year. For now I’m going to do an occasional bonus livestream series and rebroadcast it on the pod. It’s not ideal but it’s all I’ve got in me atm. So every few weeks expect a bonus pod ep with the audio of FB or IG live session. Follow the podcast in your favourite pod app: https://pod.link/teacherwellbeing It also means there are only 3 months left to sign up to coaching with me as I will be closing my books a couple months before I take maternity leave. Since my coaching is always in a series and you can’t do one off session sunless you’re a previous client, I’ll need to start the last coaching series group in term 3 so make sure if you have been thinking about signing up for coaching do so or wait until this time next year! Also I’m changing things up with the discovery calls due to an unfortunate run of no shows and so it’s one free appointment only, if you miss it without communicating then it will be a fee before you can rebook. Webinars are free and there is a recording so you don’t have to be there live but discovery call not so much. Read more about my coaching and sign up for a free Discovery call at https://selfcareforteachers.com.au/coaching Also, the resilient teacher coaching program will not be running again this year because I’ll be on maternity leave in term 4 but I am going to do something special in term 3 on the topic of resilient teachers so stay tuned and make sure you’re on the waiting list to hear about that! Sign up for the waiting list at https://selfcareforteachers.com.au/resilientteaacher The plan is to run the full program again in Term 1 2022 with it being the only way to work with me in person in first part of next year but no promises, I will see how things go with Bub! Get on the waiting list anyway and you’ll get updates about it. School Wellbeing Champions: I haven’t been able to progress that as much as I’d hoped because I’ve been so unwell but I haven’t forgotten and I am definitely planning on doing something with that later this term or in term 3 so make sure you’re on the regular newsletter list for that too if you’re interested in being a school wellbeing champions. Also, I’m keen to make my School Wellbeing Sessions PD options as accessible as possible to Rural, Regional and Remote schools because I know there are extra challenges there with accessing PD compared with those of you in metro schools. So I’d love to hear about your challenges with accessing PD in RRR areas, keen to help address some of those in my trainings, so let me know at hello@selfcareforteachers.com.au if that’s you! It’s about the three thinking traps that sabotage your wellbeing as a teacher and what to do instead. I see these thinking traps all the time and I experience them myself, so don’t feel like you’re alone in it. Of course it’s not an exhaustive list, but these are the top three that I see and I think it’s useful to identify them so that we can get out of the trap. I’ve heard Katrina Bourke say that we have to "name it to tame it" when talking about emotions, and I think it applies here too. Once we’re aware of these thinking traps, we can catch ourselves in the act and redirect our thoughts to be more conducive to supporting our self-care and our wellbeing and resilience, instead of sabotaging and undermining it. The Teacher Wellbeing Podcast is turning 4! In celebration of this milestone, I’m sharing a replay of S05 E04 from 2019. This is my absolute favourite episode of the last 4 years, and it’s also the episode I’ve had the most feedback from listeners about. This really resonated with you then, and I think it will resonate with you now too. The School Wellbeing Champions meetup is on again, on the 10th and 13th of March 2021. Head to selfcareforteachers.com.au/wellbeingchampion to find out more! Despite the jokes that teaching is 9 - 3 with 12 weeks holiday a year, we know it to be otherwise. We know that the work starts well before 9am, finishes well after 3pm and that large parts of those holidays are usually spent working too. We also know that workload has been increasing over the last 10-20 years. The introduction of new improvement measures such as Professional Standards for Teachers and the national curriculum, as well as the impact of NAPLAN and the My School Website have resulted in more administrative work, much of which arguably has little to do with the actual running of a classroom day to day. There is a vast invisible workload required of teachers today, much of which isn't only invisible to the general public but it's also going unnoticed and unacknowledged by us too. As well as the administrative requirements of the job, the mental load of running a classroom and the emotional labour inherent in the role are increasing too. This episode is about that invisible work, and while there are no quick fixes, I offer some steps to take to help survive and practise self-care in the process. Today I’m excited to bring you my conversation with Steve Francis from HappySchool.com.au and we are of course talking about creating happy schools! Steve tells us about his teaching and leadership background in QLD and Hong Kong, and how his passion for supporting the teachers that he worked with turned into a Masters researching teacher stress, and then eventually that turned into the Happy School business. We talk about the findings from Steve’s research, including the 3 key factors for staff wellbeing in schools and the really important piece of school leaders acknowledging and recognising the good work of their staff. The School Wellbeing Champions meetup is on again, on 10th and 13th March 2021. This is a virtual networking event for teachers and school staff who are the ‘wellbeing person’ at work. What is culture? Two definitions I like are: ‘people like us do things like this’ and ‘ideas, customs, and social behaviours of a particular people or society.’ Many teachers tell me they feel at odds with the culture in their workplace. Or worse than at odds, completely undermined by it. Well, if that’s you, I hear you. I know how challenging it can be. I also want you to know that you don’t have to let it be a foregone conclusion. If your school culture is one of Depleted Teachers and you want to be a Resilient Teacher, then you can shift your own personal culture to move towards that instead. Here’s 4 steps to help you: - Decide what culture you want - Identify what thoughts, beliefs and actions enhance and promote, or inhibit and undermine that culture - Surround yourself with people who get it, support you and will hold you accountable - Take action, tweak, follow up Remember, if you’re interested in having proactive wellbeing conversations in your staffroom, follow along with the prompts by @flourishingfebruary ! At the best of times, teaching is exciting, exhausting, scary and rewarding. First year teachers find it is all of this and more! There are so many new things to learn and so, so much work to do. Non-teaching friends and family don’t really understand the demands of the job, you are still feeling like a bit of an imposter (are they really letting me in the classroom by myself?) and the students can and will test you because you’re new. There are so many expectations to meet, a lot of new names to remember and lots and lots and lots of paperwork. It is all too easy as a teacher to always put your needs at the bottom of the list. This is even more of an issue in your first year as you are eager to prove yourself and likely trying really hard to avoid any negative assessments of your abilities. Here’s a few dos and don’ts for self-care in your first year. Happy New Year! You did it, you made it through 2020, the weirdest, hardest year yet. Wherever you are in the world, I want to acknowledge the huge challenges and upheaval 2020 brought and give you a big pat on the back. Well done, it is no mean feat. So we find ourselves in 2021 and I wonder if perhaps your social media newsfeed and email inbox is filled with messages about how unworthy you are, how you need to punish yourself for any pleasures or indulgences over Christmas and the holidays, and overhaul you entire life by January 14 to be enough. Well, this isn’t one of those messages. Those messages are utterly wrong and completely crap. You are SO worthy, already and always. You do not have to punish yourself for enjoying yourself, even if perhaps you feel you over did it a bit. And you most certainly do not need to overhaul any part of your life by January 14 to be enough. You are enough. Already. Always. If you’d like some gentle support in being proactive about your health, wellbeing and resilience this year then I invite you to enrol in the Self-Care System Mini-Course and Healthy Habits Planner. We’re having a live 2021 Vision Workshop tomorrow, Tuesday 5th January at 10am QLD time. Enrol here: http://selfcareforteachers.com.au/self-care-system Whether you’re into resolutions and goal setting like me, or whether you think the New Year is just an arbitrary date, please take some time to encourage and nourish yourself this month. In this episode I'm sharing my predictions for the 2021 trends in the teacher health, wellbeing and resilience space in Australia (and beyond). This is also the last episode of Season 7 and for 2020. I will take a little break and see you in 2021! My predictions are: 1. Schools are taking on board the wellbeing message and doing SOMETHING but it will continue to be hit and miss. 2. Wellbeing Champions continue to grow and be driven by staff instead of leaders. Individuals are making impacts in the schools and communities where they live. 3. Education policy and Department expectations will continue to be problematic but also continue to acknowledge the need for teacher wellbeing. At least they're paying lip service now? 4. Unions will continue to be necessary but as we saw with Qld this year, people are unhappy with the result. We can acknowledge things would be worse without the unions fighting for us and still be unsatisfied 5. Teacher Wellbeing/Wellness businesses are increasing in quantity. It's great that there are more options for teachers, some are more rigorous than others so just make sure you do your homework. 6. Positive Psychology/Positive Education will continue to dominate the teacher wellbeing conversation, and complementary approaches are still very small percentage of the landscape but growing I think. 7. Student Welfare/Wellbeing will continue to be given more attention at the national level which means it’s up to us to keep reinforcing the message that student wellbeing and teacher wellbeing are intricately linked. Hence the increase in School Wellbeing Champions! 8. The overall school staff health and wellbeing movement is well under way. It is mainstream now even if still a long way to go. It will continue to grow and be driven from the bottom up by individuals out of necessity. 9. Teachers are taking their own health and wellbeing into their own hands and investing their own money, energy, time, resources. This doesn't replace the need for the school-wide, state-wide and national initiatives, however it is excellent that teachers are no longer waiting for others to do something about it and prioritising themselves. Make sure you’re following me @selfcareforteachers on IG and subscribed to the #teacherwellbeingpodcast in your favourite podcast app because I have some exciting things coming in January. Grab the Self-Care System Mini-Course and Self-Care Planner/Habits Tracker via the link below to help support yourself over the school holidays to have a more wellbeing and less fatigue, more resilience and less burnout in 2021. Enrol here: https://selfcareforteachers.com.au/self-care-system It’s not a quick fix, it’s a system that will teach you to make micro-changes each week and each month so you can make a big difference to your life, health and wellbeing over the course of the year (not just on the school holidays.) I really love this time of year, because it’s the time I start looking at planners and calendars and thinking about all the possibilities of a new year. It’s exciting! 1 3 Reasons We Need Wellbeing Champion Positions in Schools 37:45

I’m sharing 3 reasons why your school needs to have a wellbeing champion role that is focused on teacher and staff wellbeing. First, I acknowledge the Gaibul people of the Toowoomba area who are the traditional custodians of the land on which I am recording this today, where I live and work, and where Self-Care for Teachers operates. I acknowledge their elders past present and emerging and that sovereignty was never ceded. So I invite you to take a moment to acknowledge the First Nations people of the land on which you are standing right now too. So right now I acknowledge this idea of having an official Wellbeing Champion position in schools is aspirational. We don’t currently have an official role of Wellbeing Champion or Wellbeing Coordinator or Head of Wellbeing in most schools. Therefore this episode is really more about my vision of what these roles could be in schools, rather than necessarily what we currently have. I’d love for it to be something to spark your imagination and hopefully some conversation in your staffroom. I have a beautiful conversation with Beth Cregan from Write Away With Me. Beth is a teacher and a writer and runs professional development on writing and creativity for teachers as well as teaching writing to students. We talk about how teachers can use writing to support their wellbeing, both individually but also collectively in staff groups, as well as how writing can be a powerful self-care practice. We also discuss how self-care practices really come to the forefront when we’re already depleted but that we need to be extra gentle in starting up new practices in challenging times, plus the power of poetry and journalling. Beth also shares some great tips, one of which is called ‘The Book of Wonderings’, which is really all about how impactful it can be to ask ourselves and ponder on questions. So if you haven’t yet listened to last week’s episode about Self-coaching Questions for Teachers, I recommend that as a follow up. Also remember you can get the accompanying workbook in the freebies library at selfcareforteachers.com.au/library I recommend doing that soon too because when you sign up for the Freebies Library you also get to then receive ‘The Advocate’ which is the Self-Care for Teachers newsletter. I have some exciting things coming up in the next few months and early 2021 and I’ll be announcing them first to readers of The Advocate, and they’ll also get some special early bird options too! Now this episode was recorded late 2019, so when Beth says ‘last week she went to rural Victoria’, it wasn’t actually last week at the time of releasing this in November 2020! And as with Bek’s episode a couple of weeks back, there will be no mention of the pandemic in this episode because when we recorded this it hadn’t happened yet. Beth tells me that since the pandemic some of the writing programs have moved online. I believe the writing program for students in already online and others are coming soon. The best place to connect with Beth these days is on Instagram @write.away.with.me and there’s a Facebook page to follow also. Quick reminder about the Wellbeing Champions Meetups happening in a few weeks time, on the 18th and 21st November. These are for anyone who feels like they are the ‘wellbeing person’ at their school or who cares a lot about staff wellbeing at work, and so if you’re listening to this podcast, that’s probably you! So you are invited to this virtual networking event to Connect with others like you from around Australia, go to selfcareforteachers.com.au/wellbeingchampion for more info. If you’re listening to this after November 2020 go to that link anyway because there will be more of these events and details will be there. Today I'm sharing with you 29 questions you can ask as part of a process of self-coaching. Coaching is just a conversation where one person takes on the role of asking questions that help the person being coached to uncover the answers for themselves and sometimes to break out of the thinking patterns and habits and mindsets that they might not have even realised was holding them back or getting in the way of getting what they want. Coaching takes many forms but essentially it’s just asking better questions, and you can do this for yourself. It’s obviously helpful to have an external person go through this process with you but it is a skill you can practice and improve on, and self-coaching can be a great tool in your wellbeing toolkit that can help you when you feel stuck, when you feel like something has to change, or when you come against a challenge and need to make some decisions. So today I’m going to take you through 29 Questions that you can ask yourself as part of a self-coaching process, or you can also use these with a buddy and coach each other. These are questions that I commonly ask my clients. This is not an exhaustive list of questions you can ask as part of coaching or self-coaching, and of course you don’t need to ask all of these either—this is NOT an all or nothing activity. You might even just pick one or two of these questions that really feel like the best fit in the situation and just try them on for size. Some of the questions are in a set that help you look at a situation or topic from multiple angles and the questions go together in a series. There are no right or wrong answers here. This is an exercise is imagination and creativity, in self-discovery, self-awareness and . There’s no perfection needed in the way you answer these questions. The way you answer them today might be different to how you answer them tomorrow and that’s fine. These questions are about helping you get out of the regular habits of thinking that we often fall into, the stories that we tell ourselves, and the narratives that we’re deciding and believing are true. However, these stories or narratives or beliefs are not necessarily reality or how other people involved perceive the situation. So by challenging our habits of thinking we’re actually able to see more possibilities than we already can and perhaps to make better or different choices. Way back in the beginning of 2017, I spoke to Bek about her journey of finding more personal wellbeing as a teacher and treating herself like a person first and a teacher second. And at the end of 2019, we caught up with a bit of an update. Bek shares her story of how her journey progressed and how her wellbeing and health habits had to shift and tweak after she became a mum and also got a promotion at work. And she is now a mum to two little boys. So at the time we recorded this, she was just about to go off on her second lot of maternity leave. You are almost at the end of the weirdest, most challenging term ever. Just in case you haven’t paused to acknowledge yourself, take a moment to do so now. This last term has been the biggest disruption to Australia’s education system in history. Twice. Across Australia, teachers have never worked harder or had to be more flexible, adaptable and cooperative in the face of some huge challenges and rapidly changing circumstances. Yet, here we are. Just a week or two left until holidays (depending where you are in Aus) and you did it. You have been an integral part of getting this nation through the health, social and economic crises that we are still in the midst of. Join me for this free live workshop series, screening on Facebook. If you can't make it when I go live, then you can watch the replay in the Facebook event. Whether you join me for the free workshop series or not, please take some time this week to acknowledge all that you have accomplished this term. If you want to, raise it as a topic of shared reflection and celebration in the staff room or with your teacher buddies. Take a moment this week to be grateful to each other and to yourself for making it through this incredible term. This is one for the history books, and you have been a part of it. In this episode I want to explore two myths that are sabotaging your health and wellbeing, and those are the ideas that health and wellbeing is binary and linear. Now, when I say myths, I’m not necessarily talking about mythology, as in The Greek Gods and Goddesses, Hercules and Zeus and Athena and Aphrodite. That’s not what I mean. I’m talking about that other definition of myth, which is a widely held belief or idea that is actually a misconception. However, all myths have some truth to them, but to believe them literally is problematic. So, these two myths that I want to share with you today, about binary and linear health and wellbeing outcomes, are things that our culture, our Western Industrial culture really socialises or conditions us to believe as true. We have been taught for our whole lives that life, the world, relationships, health, everything, is binary and that it’s linear. And it's not! I also share my ongoing commitment to anti-racism work and unpacking my privilege as a teacher and a coach. There are just SO many learnings and I’m so grateful that Tina shared her story with us. Now, like many of my episodes this season, it was recorded before COVID so there’s no mention of that at all, but we do talk about people pleasing, boundaries, the challenges of moving away from your support networks for a job, and the challenges and opportunities of living and working in a small town. The two big themes from this episode are around having a safe workplace, and taking care of physiological needs, that bottom level of Maslow’s Hierarchy. So Tina shares her experience of being bullied at work, and how as an early career teacher she didn’t necessarily know that that wasn’t normal, and it was thanks to an older, wiser, more experienced colleague pointing out to her that that was what was happening that she was able to make some decisions about what was right for her. And running alongside that like I said was a whole lot of body messages that were really telling Tina to pay more attention to her basic physiological needs, but like so many of us, it took a diagnosis of a health condition for her to actually pay attention to those messages. We do focus on early career teachers in this episode because Tina is an early career teacher, but I know many aspects of the story will be familiar to people at all stages of life and career. As always, remember you’re a person first and a teacher second and you are WORTHY of your own care. May you continue to look after yourself wholeheartedly this year, be a beacon of inspiration for others and an example to encourage your colleagues to do the same. 1 Staff wellbeing as we transition back to on campus learning, with Katrina Bourke 33:49

This interview is with Katrina Bourke of Katrina Bourke coaching, who you may remember from way back in Series 2. We talk about schools around Australia returning to on campus learning for all students, and the way that transition is playing out for teachers and leaders and school staff, and what we can do individually and collectively to support ourselves and each other during that transition and the challenges of the ongoing uncertainty around the way the school system and the COVID-19 crisis will continue to unfold. I really wanted to release this episode this week because I believe it’s important, timely conversation for educators as schools navigate this current transition, which is happening right now. But before we get to that interview, I want to take a moment to pause and acknowledge something else happening right now. If you’re listening to this episode at the time of its release, in the first week of June 2020, there are protests in the USA this week following the murder of George Floyd in police custody, which is following on from a long list of police brutality against BIPOC, black, indigenous and people of colour, and I want to acknowledge the hurt and trauma and injustice of that. To my US listeners, particularly African American listeners, I am thinking of you. Black lives matter. In Australia, it’s also Reconciliation Week and we have our own black lives matter movement because we also police brutality here. According to the Guardian Australia’s Deaths Inside project, there have been “at least 432 Aboriginal deaths in custody since the royal commission in 1991.” If this is news to you, or even if it’s not, I will put a couple of links in the description of this episode that I recommend you read for the Australian context of this, because it gets so little media or public attention here. I acknowledge and recognise the pain and trauma of this injustice for Aboriginal people here in Australia too. If you’re following @selfcareforteachers on social media you may have seen that this week I am participating in the #amplifymelanatedvoiceschallenge, which is about centering the voices and lived experiences of folks of colour, so I’m not posting my own content on social media this week. I’m sharing the work of BIPOC teachers and leaders and content creators in my stories, and listening and learning, reflecting on my privilege and how I can unpack that going forwards. This isn’t a one and done thing, it will be ongoing internal work for me and for all of us to unravel how society conditions us and what we allow to continue at the expense of black and indigenous lives. I want to say also that I don’t need praise for this, it’s not about me, and I’m not at all sure of the right response but I know that ignoring this and saying nothing would be wrong. I support the #blacklivesmatter movement, it is a matter of human rights. To my listeners who are white, I invite you to spend some time reading and learning about it, too. Start with the links below and then keep learning, and listening to the lived experiences of folks of colour. 1 My alternative "plea to teachers" as we begin Term 2, 2020 22:05

Last week our Prime Minister recorded a message for teachers and I think it's fair to say it had a mixed reception. Today I have a message for teachers that I hope will resonate. I have been hearing from a lot of you in comment sections, in PMs and DMs, and in coaching sessions over the last month and I’m seeing some themes arising that I want to speak to. Some of you began Term 2 last week, some begin tomorrow, some have another week or so to go. In any case, you don’t need me to tell you that Term 2 this year is going to be unlike any term ever before... There are A LOT of mixed emotions flying around, and anxiety in particular is contagious. I ask you to be careful and gentle of your hearts and minds, and your social media use. Be mindful of where, with whom and in what digital forums you share and engage with your own and each others' anxieties at this time. In many ways this is a delicate time in terms of teacher status and public perception of the profession. As much as we hope people behave respectfully about teachers, we need to also continue to be professional too. It's not about 'fake it til you make it' or spreading toxic positivity that dismisses the very real troubles going on right now. It’s about being caring, compassionate, mindful and measured with ourselves and with each other as a form of self-care and community care at this time. Teachers, I know you are feeling the pressure and many of you will be tempted to throw yourselves into this term in the same way you have every term before: pushing through, soldiering on and ignoring your own needs for the sake of getting the to-do list done. My plea to you this term is that you NOT do that. Maslow’s Hierarchy comes before Bloom’s Taxonomy for children, and for adults too. Don't let your basic human needs become depleted because you are going to need as many of your physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual reserves as possible this term. Keep them topped up! Even though the pressure and workload is great, don’t let self-care become an afterthought. There’s so much uncertainty and some conflicting advice and yes, there are some disappointing messages coming from various parts of the community. Teachers, let’s not focus there. Let’s keep our eyes and ears and hands and hearts on what matters most, on looking after ourselves and each other, and then doing the best job you can in extraordinary circumstances. I know you can do it and are already doing it. I see you. I believe in you. I am so proud of you. Remember you are a person first and a teacher second and you are worthy of your own care. May you be a beacon of inspiration for your colleagues and encourage others to do the same, now more than ever. x P.S. If you do need extra support with your wellbeing right now, please do reach out. Hi everyone and welcome to this bonus episode of the Teacher Wellbeing podcast. Today I’m talking about teaching in the time of covid-19. So I am recording this not with my regular mic and it’s just raw, imperfect, in-edited and un-produced, because I want to get it into your earbuds as soon as possible. This is being recorded at a very particular moment in history. It’s lunchtime, Monday 23rd March 2020 and I’m in Queensland Australia. The Covid-19 pandemic has devastated or is in the process of devastating many countries around the world, including China, Italy, France, Spain, the US and the UK. Here in Australia we have now got more than 1200 cases, are being directed to practice social distancing, various states and territories are closing their borders domestically, and there is a petition of doctors raising concerns that we are heading for the same fate as Italy if something doesn’t change dramatically in our response, and yet schools remain open. Last night our Prime Minister held a press conference where he announced sweeping new social distancing measures by closing pubs, clubs, gyms, churches and other public gathering places, but emphasised that schools will remain open. Victoria, ACT and NSW however have split from this in various ways, either announcing school closures this week or at the moment NSW is saying schools stay open but they are urging parents to keep kids at home. Here in Queensland, the Queensland Teachers Union held an emergency meeting this morning and released a newsflash a couple of hours ago demanding that Queensland state schools be closed to students from Wednesday. Whether that happens, remains to be seen. Of course I’m well aware that this all may change, by tonight even, but at the time of recording, that’s the situation as it stands. Links mentioned: My post that went a bit viral on Facebook Sign up to the Advocate , weekly love note in your email inbox Fatigue Resilience Masterclass 1 Coaching Options Coming soon: Season 6 of the podcast! New Freebies Library Resilient Teacher Group Coaching program My tips for coping with anxiety during this are: 1. Don't panic. 2. If you're feeling very anxious, practice lots of self-compassion. 3. Follow the specific workplace advice for your school and workplace - it's different everywhere. 4. Check the advice that your union is giving too. They do seem to have finally caught up and are issuing advice relevant to your state or territory, so check that, it’s important. 5. Stay home if you're sick! Do not under any circumstances 'soldier on'. The schoolwork will wait, I promise. 6. If you have underlying medical conditions that already compromise your immune system, do speak with your doctor about how you specifically should prepare for and respond to the virus. If possible get a doctor’s certificate stating your need to not be at work and be social distancing right now. 7. Employ self-care strategies for anxiety that work for you. Suggestions include: 8. Meditation 9. Exercise 10. Journalling 11. Talk to a trusted friend/vulnerability buddy 12. Fact Check your thoughts. Is it true? 13. If your anxiety isn't manageable with self-care strategies, speak to a professional. Be mindful of how and when you consume news media. It's important to be informed, but that doesn't mean being plugged in 24/7. 15. Be extremely mindful of how you consume social media, and avoid it altogether if it is an anxiety trigger for you. I highly recommend you read 'Digital Minimalism' by Cal Newport for more on this. 16. Wash your hands, eat good food, get good sleep. 17. Look out for each other. Even if you're not feeling too worried about this, others are. Don't belittle them, support them. Send them this podcast episode and help them put these strategies into practice. Remember to pick your battles and bide your time and stay focused on keeping your own personal resources topped up during this time so you can continue to rise to the challenges that are being presented to you. You are doing an amazing job, dear teachers, in extremely challenging circumstances. I see you. I am proud of you. Recently on the Teachers Thriving Lounge Facebook Group , Trudy from TeachersThriving.com and I spent a good 45 minutes discussing the very important but under-researched topic of teacher sleep, and some strategies you can use to help you get a good night's rest. As Trudy says, "Sleep is the sleeper topic for educators. No-one really is talking about it but it is a big issue." So we know it's a huge problem, but what can you do about it? Well, the bad news is that there are no overnight solutions (pun very much intended!), but the good news is there is a lot you can do to reclaim your sleep and take control of your rest. All you need is your phone or computer and you can leave me a voicemail. You can ask me a question, make a comment about any past episodes, or suggest a topic for a future episode. However, what I'd really love is for you to answer the question below for a special project I'm working on for Season 6 of the podcast. In 3 minutes or less, answer the following question: Thinking back on your first year of teaching, what did you learn about staying healthy and cultivating wellbeing as a person and as a teacher? Put another way, what advice would you give your first-year teacher self about staying healthy and cultivating wellbeing as a teacher? There are a few more instructions on the website which I recommend reading before you do so. I'd love for you to share your lessons and wisdom with listeners of the Teacher Wellbeing Podcast! The audio quality isn't amazing, but it's good enough and the episode will self-destruct in about a week so listen now while you can! I have half updated my website with my new programs, but the tech is causing me some little issues and I don't want to break the whole website (again ha!) so I will finish updating gradually over the week. In the meantime I wanted to come here and tell you about my three new coaching packages (plus the one old one that has been given a new name!) - Happy Habits Accountability Coaching (same as before!) - Nourish and Nurture Life and Wellbeing Coaching - Teacher in Transition Coaching - Teacher-preneur Online Business Consulting I will honour the old prices for anyone who books a Discovery Call today (as in, you make the booking today, for a time that suits you in the coming months) and then goes on to book coaching within the next 3 months. That means you will get the new packages at the old prices! Booking link for Discovery Call: https://app.acuityscheduling.com/schedule.php?owner=13197589&appointmentType=5675726 In case you don’t know, a Discovery Call is a free video conference call where we get to know each other, talk about your life and wellbeing goals, and see if we might be a good fit for coaching. I usually do these calls via a free program called Zoom (a bit like Skype, only better!) and it’s a great time for you to ask any questions you may have about coaching, see if now is the right time and if I’m the best person for the job. I'm going to be changing my free Discovery Call process later in the year too, so now's a good time to nab one of these sessions if coaching has been something you have been thinking about. In this episode I have a brilliant conversation with fellow teacher wellbeing enthusiast, Jessica Terlick from Lead and Inspire Community. Jessica shares her story with us and it’s one I think you’ll relate to. She tells us about her experiences as a preservice and early career teacher and how she fell into the trap that so many of us fall into, which is living and breathing the job and letting work take over life as well. It’s obvious she’s done a lot of self-reflection and can see how some of her patterns were contributing to that. Jessica shares with us in this episode how being so driven to achieve and succeed, while on the surface is a great trait, ended up undermining her health and wellbeing as a person because Jessica the teacher became the sole focus. We also discuss how her partner Ben helped her find more work-life balance, and what led her to creating the Lead and Inspire Community. Jessica also shares some brilliant tips to help you thrive in the classroom and in life. I’m deliberately doing this episode directly after Gabbie’s 2 part episodes because I know they may have stirred up a lot for some of you. The content of Gabbie’s book Teacher and the content of our conversation, while really important, also touches on some real sore points for teachers. I know because you tell me and I know because they’re sore points for me too. So I want to say right up front that this episode is as much a note to self as it is a message to you. I hope that this episode it brings you as much comfort as it did to me in writing it and putting it together. X Sign up for the Teaching Career Crossroads webinar here . I think this week’s episode is an absolute must-listen for any teacher today. It’s Part 2 of my conversation with Gabbie Stroud, author of the best-selling book ‘Teacher’, and if you haven’t yet, I do recommend you go and listen to Part 1 of this interview which is the previous episode on the podcast. In that episode Gabbie told us a bit about her story, we talked about the expectations on teachers and the state of education in 2019 and the visible and invisible work of the job. Plus Gabbie told us how writing the book was cathartic for her and she shared some of her recovery process too. In Part 2, we talk about the ‘soldier on’ culture in our schools and why that’s so dangerous, and how important but also how difficult real rest is. Gabbie also shares very honestly her grief over leaving teaching and the struggles that she’s had since then, plus we have what I think is possibly the most important conversation of the year when it comes to teacher health and wellbeing and burnout, which is around financial security. It’s something that I just don’t think is discussed enough and I’m so so grateful for the absolute honesty that Gabbie displays here. We discuss how when you’re at your wits end and physically and emotionally burnt out, you aren’t always in a great state to be making wise decisions, and while quitting your teaching job may seem to be the thing you should do because it’s causing so much stress, it actually be taking you out of the frying pan and into the fire. We also talk about what’s on the horizon for Gabbie, including the book she’s writing called ‘A letter to the parents of Australia’, and what wellbeing looks like for her these days. It’s a really great conversation and I hope you enjoy! You can find Gabbie on Facebook or Instagram @gabbiestroud and Twitter @gj_stroud The blog post I mention at the end of this episode can be found here , and you can also check out my Teachers Pay Teachers Store here , or the Patreon page here . I’m so excited to bring you this episode of the podcast with a woman who I’m sure needs no introduction! Gabbie Stroud is a freelance writer, novelist and recovering teacher. Her critical commentary of Australia’s education system was published in Griffith Review’s Edition 51 Fixing The System. Links to the essay went ‘viral’ on social media and the essay was viewed 24 000 times within the first two weeks of publication. ‘Teacher’ is Gabbie’s memoir, expanding on that essay and bringing readers into today’s challenging classrooms. So in this episode of the Teacher Wellbeing Podcast Gabbie shares with us a bit about her story and we talk about her brilliant book, and how it has really lifted the lid on the conversation around education in the Australian media landscape. We talk about the shifts Gabbie has seen in education in the last 20 years, and the shifts in her language and feeling and life that eventually led her to making the decision not to teach anymore in this current system. We ended up having such a great chat that it went for an hour, so I’ve split it into two parts. You’ll hear the first part of our conversation this week and the second part next week, so stay tuned for that! I speak with Ben Weir about his journey from classroom teacher to clinical psychologist, and the power of self-compassion. This was a really interesting conversation that aligns with the ethos of Self-Care for Teachers. Having followed his love of learning into the primary school classroom and also into yoga, he now works at New River, an organisation that aims to build capacity for positive change in individuals, school communities and community organisations. As part of his Masters of Clinical Psychology, Ben is researching teacher wellbeing via the Teacher Stress and Self-Compassion Study, which he would love you to participate in. In this episode of the Teacher Wellbeing Podcast, I interview Steve Waters from the Teach Well Alliance in the UK. Steve is a former high school English and Drama teacher, who worked for 30 years in high schools in the UK including as an Assistant Principal. After spending some time in a consultancy role for the district, he began noticing an increasing number of teachers were struggling under the pressures of the job and that wellbeing crises were happening more frequently. He decided to do something about it, and has set up the Teach Well Alliance where he works with schools to help them through a 12-month organisational wellbeing program for staff. The Teach Well Alliance also has a conference coming up in July called Tackling Teacher Burnout, so if you're in the UK keep an eye out for that! In this episode, Steve and I talk about some of the factors that influence organisational wellbeing in schools, the expensive and vicious cycle of high staff absences, and some great tips for early career teachers to help support their wellbeing and practice. You can connect with Steve on Linked In or find out more about his work and the conference at www.teachwellalliance.com This episode is sponsored by the Self-Care for Teachers Resource Room: an online hub for teachers to learn about health, happiness, wellbeing and burnout prevention. In this episode of the Teacher Wellbeing podcast, I had a fascinating conversation with business growth coach Lena West about personal leadership and being the CEO of your own life. We talk about what it means to be the CEO of your life, and how you can use the CEO mindset to help support your health and wellbeing. Lena explains why sometimes we need to reevaluate our levels of self-care and shift out of maintenance mode if there is a qualifying event in our life that means we require more. We also cover boundaries, making life changes and new habits incrementally, and why resilience and reframing are so important. Lena also shares a story of a turning point in her life and how a teacher made a big impact on her, which I found a beautiful reminder of the power we all have to impact the people around us. You can connect with Lena via Facebook or email lena@lenawest.com “If your needs aren’t taken care of you don’t have the reserves to even consider someone else’s needs because you’re in a deficit.” ~ Lena West At the start of this episode I also make a few announcements and reminders, including about the second in the free webinar series I'm running called 'Preventing Burnout: Managing Stress'. In this episode, I interview Kelly Hine from Body and Soul Retreats. Kelly has a background as an early childhood educator and university lecturer. She now runs retreats, is a Reiki Master, mindfulness, meditation and self-love teacher. She has an online membership community, Soul Space, which delivers weekly soul-nurturing mini-retreats that blend the best of science and spirituality for a happy, peaceful and meaningful life. I have experienced some of Kelly's meditations at a retreat, and they're just beautiful. I really resonated with Kelly's story in this episode. She describes her younger self as a workaholic, insomniac, overthinking stress head worrier, who loved her job but lived and breathed work, which really took its toll. In this episode, she shares her health and wellbeing journey from there and how meditation and mindfulness helped her heal and create a life of more wellbeing. Ever feel like a slave to your email inbox or to those little red notification numbers on your social media apps? I do, and it's something I've been working hard to improve over the last year and a half. In this episode, I share with you the digital boundaries I've been setting up and how they've made a difference in my life, helping improve my productivity, my relationships and my sleep. Social media and email is here to stay, and it's a wonderful thing that we can connect to each other through these mediums at all hours and across huge distances. It's not about removing them from your life altogether, nor is it about implementing the exactly list of things that I've tried in exactly the order I share them. I invite you to simply reflect on your experience of the impact of email and social media on your life and wellbeing, and consider approaching these platforms with more intention and less mindless scrolling. I'm confident that when you do, you'll find more enjoyment in the platforms and your life! At the start of this episode I also make a few announcements and reminders, including about the second in the free webinar series I'm running called 'Preventing Burnout: Managing Stress'. In this episode I speak with Meg Durham from Open Mind Education (openmindeducation.com). Meg was a little girl who always wanted to be a teacher and she grew up to be a Science and PE secondary school teacher. However, despite being extremely excited to begin her teaching career, she describes her first year as an "avalanche". The only way she survived was by napping, and putting her personal life on hold until the holidays. It was an unexpected conversation with a student in crisis that put Meg on the path to a Master’s of Student Wellbeing. After a move from Melbourne, VIC to Toowoomba, QLD and from full-time to a 0.7 (or 70%) teaching load, she experienced a marked change to her quality of life, quality of teaching, and life/job satisfaction. One thing led to another and she eventually began Open Mind Education. In this episode, Meg shares about the work she now does with schools, and how she’s found there is no one-size-fits all approach. She then goes on to explain why school wellbeing is like a farm and why teacher wellbeing is like a battery. I never metaphor I didn’t liked and Meg delivers on the metaphor front amazingly well in this episode! We also talk about the barriers to improving wellbeing, and the importance looking at our psychological fitness in a similar approach to physical fitness. “Imagine what life will be like for you if you show up fully charged for yourself and the people around you.” ~ Meg Durham You can find more about Meg at www.openmindeducation.com and for full show notes for this episode, visit selfcareforteachers.com.au/podcast This episode is sponsored by Katrina Bourke Coaching, helping caring professions create a life of balance and flow. Are you striving for balance or you do you think it's a dirty word? In this episode, I share what I've learned from my Exercise Physiologist husband about the importance of balance in preventing falls for older adults, and why I think it applies to teachers when preventing burnout. I personally feel that work-life balance is not a myth but that the way balance is often spoken about is unhelpful and set it up to be unattainable. In this episode, I interview Trudy from Teachers Thriving Magazine (www.teachersthriving.com). Trudy is a former Teacher and Principal who now works in a regional support role in Queensland, and has a lot of wisdom to share from her many years in the education system across a variety of roles. In this interview, Trudy shares her own wellbeing journey, including the juggling act of having a family and a career, and what she did to deal with her working mother guilt. We also touch on the problem many teachers face of having trouble sleeping, as well as why Trudy is seeking work-life satisfaction rather than work-life balance. Of course, we also explore the beautiful Teachers Thriving Magazine, which is not like your standard teacher's journal or professional publication that you might find littering the tables in the staff common room. It's a beautiful and very inspiring read and if you're looking for some holiday reading, I highly recommend it. One of the things a lot of teachers tell me is a challenge for them in their personal and workplace wellbeing is having to work with a difficult person. It might be a colleague, a parent of one of the students you teach, or one of the leadership team at your school. If you're feeling stressed, overwhelmed or burnt out, your ability to respond rather than react will be even more limited. So what can you do about it? In this episode, I share a personal story as well as some concepts from author Harriet Lerner (www.harrietlerner.com) about the way interpersonal relationships are like dances made up of predictable patterns of steps. As frustrating as it is, all you can control is your next step in the dance. "There is nothing wrong with wanting to change another person. The problem is that it usually doesn't work." ~ Harriet Lerner in 'The Dance of Anger' At the start of this episode I also make a few announcements and reminders, including about the free webinar I'm running on April 5th 2018 at 6pm AEST called 'Preventing Burnout: The Missing Link'. This is the first Teacher Story episode of Season 3, where I interview early childhood and primary school teacher Katie, who shares her journey from health challenges to wellbeing. We talk about the occupational hazard for teachers around our voice, her experience of moving to a new place for school transfer and the impact that had on her personal and professional wellbeing. She shares some wonderful wellbeing tips, and I think the most interesting part of her story is how teaching wellbeing practices to the students in her class is what transformed Katie's personal wellbeing. Katie also runs See Me, Know Me, Teach Me (https://seemeknowmeteachme.com ), which she is setting up in order to share wellbeing tips and strategies for students and children. She wants to support children in their school and home lives, and I highly recommend following her on Facebook too. In this episode of the Teacher Wellbeing Podcast, I interview Daniela from teacher-wellbeing.com.au about all things Teacher Wellbeing! Daniela works specifically with schools and teachers to improve both whole-school organisational wellbeing as well as personal wellbeing for individual teachers. I really enjoyed this conversation because Daniela and I are very aligned in our approaches. We both agree that it's important to be proactive about wellbeing and that tiny habits done regularly make more of a difference than one-off events. We discuss the difference between taking personal responsibility for our lives (which moves us forwards) and sitting in self-blame (which keeps us stuck). Daniela shares a number of really practical action steps we can all take to be proactive (instead of reactive) about our wellbeing, and how to work on wellbeing from the inside out first. In the end, it's about being kinder to ourselves and understanding that student wellbeing starts with teacher wellbeing. Wow, it's the final episode of Season 2 and 2017 is almost over! How do you feel about New Year's Resolutions? I generally love them, but I know some people hate them. I get it, and this year I'm feeling rather tired of constant goal setting, so I'm not going to do as much intention setting this New Year as I have in the past. However, I have decided on a motto for 2018 and a theme word for the year. I share a little bit about them in this episode, and explain why it helps me make decisions and set priorities throughout the year. Have you ever chosen a theme word for your year? I'd love to know! Thank you for being along for this podcast journey in 2017 and I hope you have a very happy start to 2018! Whether you're a resolutions fan or not, Happy New Year! The guest today is Andrew McCormack, Senior Associate and Accredited Family Law Specialist at Best Wilson Buckley Family Law (https://bwbfamilylaw.com.au). We talk about legal considerations for teachers, like mandatory reporting obligations and the protocols that differ between schools, as well as some things you might need to know about teachers becoming involved in family law court proceedings. Andrew also covers some things around legal self-care, such as the ways teachers can protect themselves online. Andrew, although he is not a teacher and has never been a teacher, he gets it. He understands the impact of long hours, inflexible deadlines and sometimes highly emotional and complex human situations that arise, and how that can impact on a person's mental health. Unfortunately, there are high rates of burnout in the legal profession just like in teaching, so he understands. Andrew's advice is to remember that you are not alone, that there is a whole structure and framework supporting you, so ask for help when you need it! In this episode, I interview Lisa Murray, author of the new book "Living Beyond Burnout." Lisa and I discuss the lessons she's learned from having burnout 3 times and the stories she told herself before she knew what burnout was. We also explore why it's vital that more people talk about burnout so it stops being a shameful secret and as a community we can notice the warning signs and focus on prevention. Lisa shares the number one symptom to be on the lookout for and some wonderful tips for how be creative in your approach to work so as to increase energy and vitality. As often happens, one of the central messages is to experiment on yourself and figure out what works for you, because there is no one size fits all! Remember, to be eligible the Christmas prize draw, go to www.patreon.com/selfcareforteachers In this episode, I interview Maria about her experiences with burnout, the lessons she learned after suffering multiple organ failure and the power of personal growth. We discuss the way teaching attracts nurturers and carers who just want to serve, but end up over-giving, and the way that approach undermines effectiveness and our ability to serve in the long run. In this episode I share a snipper from the book I'm writing about teacher wellbeing. I also announce some updates to the Self-Care for Teachers Patreon Page. To be eligible the Christmas prize draw, go to www.patreon.com/selfcareforteachers "What got you here, won’t get you there. This is fitting for this conversation about teacher self-care on both an individual and collective level. What got us and our education system to this point of mass teacher burnout and attrition will not get us to mass teacher wellbeing and retention. If we keep doing what we’re doing, we’ll keep getting the results we’re getting. We are the ones we’ve been waiting for. We cannot wait any longer for the powers that be to fix our education system. The only person I have control over in my life is me. The only person you have control over is you. It would be great if we all felt confident and worthy enough to be practising radical, differentiated self-care already, but the fact is that our culture doesn’t encourage it. Apart from the school culture in which you work, which is likely permeated by a soldier-on mentality, the culture of the wider community also views self-care as selfish. The only person who can make a real change to this in your life is you. Nobody else has as vested an interest in your health and wellbeing. If you’re waiting for or need somebody to give you permission to make you and your health, happiness and wellbeing the absolute priority in your life, here it is!" Naomi has some great ideas about work-life balance and what that looks like for teachers compared with other professions, as well as some excellent self-care and wellbeing tips for fellow teachers. "It's good to take a step back and think 'this is only half an hour out of the whole year with these kids.'" It's been a while between drinks but I'm back with the first episode of Season 2! In this episode I share where I've been, why I took such an unexpectedly big break between seasons and what to expect from the second season of the podcast. I also cover some of the insidious symptoms of burnout and why I believe the teacher burnout conversation needs to shift focus going forwards. Plus, I am introducing a new way to support the show. In this episode, Ellen discusses the need for differentiation not only for students in the classroom but also for adults seeking health, happiness and wellbeing. When it comes to self-care, there is no one-size-fits-all and realising this can help us shift out of comparisonitis and perfectionism. Having a good understanding of our own personality and individual traits can help us tailor wellbeing practices to suit and make changes in our life to help us thrive. Ellen also shares her 8-step acronym for SELF-CARE, and explains why self-knowledge is so important it's the first step. Sign up for the Teaching Career Crossroads webinar here . In this episode, Ellen interiews Julie , a high school English teacher who also runs the educational consulting business Teacher Mindset. She shares her journey towards creating more wellbeing in her life, including the health scare that led to a lightbulb moment about the job. Julie's focus is always on the strength of the relationships she has with her students, colleagues and the community, and her passion for building those connections shines through. She also shares some cracking advice for early career teachers about the system, being human and setting boundaries. In this episode Ellen shares a number of metaphors that can help understand the way priorities work. Following on from the last episode about burnout, she also explains why focusing on solutions is more productive than focusing on the problem. In the goal of burnout prevention, the focus needs to be on moving towards what we do want (health, wellbeing and self-care) rather than away from what we don't want (stress and burnout). Getting our prioritise straight can help in this endeavour. The metaphors Ellen shares here can help you work out how you are currently prioritising self-care in your life and whether you need to make any changes there in order to move towards wellbeing. In this episode Ellen explains the three main components of burnout and why it is different from straight exhaustion. She also discusses the difference between chronic and acute stress, and how long term stress impacts the body and the contribution that can make to burnout. In this episode you will hear Part 2 of my interview with Elise. If you haven’t yet, go back and listen to Part 1 so that this half to he conversation makes sense! In Part 1 she tells us about some serious health challenges she’s faced, including a really, REALLY important message about vocal care, plus how important a culture of wellbeing is in a school. So while in Part 1 we talked a lot about school experiences of wellbeing there, the conversation shifts in Part 2 to be about Elise’s personal life and wellbeing, and the self-care practices in place that she supports herself with. It’s so great to hear how she has changed her practices and also her mindset from paying attention to what’s working and what’s not, and being willing to try things to see how they will or won’t support her wellbeing. Elise’s story is also such a great example of how powerful coaching is to help upgrade and improve our wellbeing both in the classroom and in life. In this episode we hear another teacher story, this time from Elise. Elise tells us about some serious health challenges she’s faced, including a really important message for teachers about vocal care. We cover so many great points and it was such a good conversation that it actually went for nearly an hour, so I’ve split it into 2 parts. This episode, part 1, focuses on workplace stuff, the wellbeing challenges and the impact a leadership team that is proactively supportive of staff wellbeing has been. In Part 2 we focus on the more personal wellbeing side of things, and Elise shares some great tips there too, so stay tuned for that next week. Throughout both of these episodes, Elise mentions Katrina Bourke from Katrina Bourke Coaching , who is a friend and supporter of this podcast and has been a wonderful sponsor for a couple of seasons now. I do want to say, though, that this is NOT a sponsored episode, Katrina is not paying me to or Elise to say any of this. This is just a very real and honest testimonial for the power of coaching, and of course for Katrina’s wonderful work both with individuals and with school staff. If you’d like to work with me there are a number of ways to do that, with individual coaching or group programs, online resources and also some in person workshops. In this episode I interview Kelsey, a teacher from the United States. She shares with us her wellbeing challenges of being consumed by the job in her first year, and losing her identity as a person. Kelsey then tells us how she has overcome this through intentional personal growth and self-care. We talk about decision fatigue, the power of rituals and routines, and learning to switch off at night. You can find Kelsey at @adventuringkelsey on Facebook and Instagram and also at adventuringkelsey.com Connect with me @selfcareforteachers on Facebook and Instagram and at selfcareforteachers.com.au I also have a couple of announcements! If you’re in South East QLD Miranda from Kickstart Martial Arts and Yoga and I are running another PD, a Teacher Wellbeing Workshop in Toowoomba on Saturday the 29th June, so head to selfcareforteachers.com.au/workshop for the details and to book. Spots are limited so get in quick! Speaking of events, make sure you keep an eye on the Facebook events list because I’m also running another free online video training on Saturday the 15th June at 9am, if you miss it it will be going into the freebies library so head to selfcareforteachers.com.au/library to check that out! I’m also currently taking expressions of interest for a new group program I’ll be running in Terms 3 and 4 of this year, all about having a better time managing and minding your mind. We touch on decision fatigue a little bit in this episode and I know that is something teachers struggle with, and of course there’s a whole lot of other cognitive demands that impact us too, things like focus vs distraction, also called deep work vs shallow work, the mental energy required to be ‘on’ in the classroom all day versus the type of thinking that’s required for planning, preparation, marketing and reporting tasks. Plus just switching off before bed. So anyway, if you’re interested in taking part in a pilot program along those lines, send me a PM or a DM on Facebook or Instagram and let me know you’re interested in the mind management program, and I’ll send through more details. And last but certainly not least, it’s the middle of the year and the end of Term time which is a time often you can feel a bit exhausted and frustrated and just over it. And honestly, that’s the perfect time to think about what you want to change. So I’m making myself available for some one-off Reflect + Refocus coaching sessions on the school holidays to help you get clear on what you’d like to change in the 2nd half of the year and how you’d like to support yourself with your health and wellbeing, as a person first and a teacher second. Now these are one offs, no ongoing coaching commitment, just time for your to Reflect + Refocus on you during the school holidays. I share 5 steps to changing your health habits and improving your wellbeing as a teacher. When I’m coaching teachers, running live webinars or presenting workshops and retreats, you tell me that your habits are something you know undermines your wellbeing, especially as the busy times of term set in. So hopefully this episode will be quite timely for you and will help you cultivate wellbeing habits that support your health and happiness not just on the school holidays but throughout the year as well. Find some helpful worksheets, including a self-coaching worksheet, a healthy habit tracker and a free training about healthy habit hacks, in the freebies library on the Self-Care for Teachers Resource Room: www.selfcareforteachers.com.au/library I also have some important people to thank. This is the last episode of Season 4, and I'm talking about three thinking traps that sabotage your wellbeing as a teacher. I see these all the time and I experience them myself, so don’t feel like you’re alone in it. Of course it’s not an exhaustive list, but these are the top three that I see and I think it’s useful to identify them so that we can get out of the trap. I’ve heard Katrina Bourke say that we have to "name it to tame it" when talking about emotions, and I think it applies here too. Once we’re aware of these thinking traps, we can catch ourselves in the act and redirect our thoughts to be more conducive to supporting our self-care and our health and happiness, instead of sabotaging it. May the rest of your 2018 go smoothly and I hope you will join me on the socials and via the newsletter so you can be the first to know about announcements and have access to things like early bird prices for programs I'm running in the new year. In this episode, I interview Clare Crew, a mother, teacher, speaker and host of the Thriving Children podcast. Clare shares with us some of the ups and downs on her journey of parenting and integrating that with her role as an educator, being still a great teacher while having some energy left for your own children. She experienced post-natal depression in her shift into motherhood, and I really wanted to have her on the show because of course teaching is still a predominantly female workforce and many still think of it as a very family-friendly profession, but it isn’t always the case. Obviously every parent’s story will be different and there is no one-size-fits-all but as you probably know by now, I think it’s important to talk about mental health challenges and also to share a range of different career options for teachers at any stage of life. Clare talks in this episode about the different choices she’s made in her teaching career since becoming a parent, and how that’s still evolving. I also particularly love her point about superheroes being fictional characters and that we shouldn’t compare ourselves to them, or to anyone else for that matter. Welcome back and thank you for bearing with me in my couple of weeks intermission of Season 4 of the podcast. In this episode, I interview a teacher friend of mine, Miranda, who I think has a really empowering story for lots of people. She has made a shift away from full time teaching, but she’s now teaching in a lot of different contexts. Miranda shares that it was a really difficult decision for her at the time but I really like the way she made some choices based on her values and what would be sustainable and effective for her long term, but also bu looking back at what her original goals were and why she became a teacher in the first place. She figured out how to still meet those goals without being in the traditional full-time school teacher context that most of us think is ‘being a teacher’. I hope you enjoy this episode and Miranda’s story, I think there’s a lot in it for us all to learn from. The report is still forthcoming, but today I thought I would share with you a bit of an overview and what I’ve got so far. In the survey, I asked a whole bunch of questions, and I don’t go through all of them today, but I do cover a bit about physical and mental health, workload, wellbeing practices and what respondents said is happening in their schools in terms of support for staff wellbeing. Stay tuned for the final report, once I’ve finished sifting through all the free-form answers. There’s a lot to do and I want to do it properly, so I appreciate all your patience. Do you ever think about your thinking? The language that we use, whether thinking or speaking, has a powerful impact on the way we experience the world. One example of this is the word tolerance, which has a lot of positive connotations. People associate it with noble concepts such as multiculturalism, religious freedom, harmony in relationships and even world peace. Indeed, many people list tolerance as one of their highest values. But ask someone what they are tolerating in their life and the answer will likely be a list of things that are actually leading to a great deal of stress and negativity for them.
