SDG 6 | Understanding Herbicide Effects on Aquatic Biodiversity | Luke Huffman
Manage episode 446833629 series 2817616
What's fluoroproxen benzyl and why should we care about its effect on biodiversity?
Thanks for joining us for another episode of highlighting change makers and their inspirational work towards the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
In this episode:
- What’s the impact of fluoroproxen benzyl on plant biodiversity and invertebrates?
- How does Luke’s research help us understand the unintended effects of herbicide applications and managing aquatic plants?
- How is Wisconsin Water Week a platform for sharing research and collaborating on aquatic plant management?
Hear from Luke Huffman - a PhD student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Luke dives into his research on the effects of fluoroproxen benzyl applications on non-target biodiversity of macrophytes and invertebrates. This herbicide is used to control the invasive Eurasian water milfoil, but Luke's focus was to understand its impact on native aquatic plants and invertebrates.
Initial results show a significant increase in plant biodiversity after herbicide treatment, with no significant impacts on invertebrates. His research has broad implications for government entities, lake associations, and anyone managing aquatic plants. Luke also touches on his previous research about online searches for information on aquatic plants.
