Welcome to Clairstone! In this episode, you will learn how to use the English words "measure" and "mature".
TRANSCRIPT:
Hello everyone, my name is Shivika, and you are listening to the English ClAIRSTONE Podcast, where you can build the cornerstone of your English vocabulary! For all the new listeners, welcome to the community, and for our regulars, hello again! Before we start, I will remind you that we upload new episodes twice a week and there are transcripts for each podcast episode in English, Arabic, and Spanish at our website projectclair.org, so go check that out if you want to follow along!

Today, we will be going over the words ‘measure’ and ‘mature’

The first word, measure, is spelled as M-E-A-S-U-R-E. Measure can be used as both a noun and a verb. The verb definition of measure is a certain amount, size, or degree of something by using a device with standard units. It is basically describing a universal unit that is used to compare sizes. For example, water can be measured in liters and pints, which would tell us the amount of the water when compared to a set size described with the units. An example of a sentence can be, “The distance between my school and house was measured to be 5 miles.’ In this sentence miles is the set unit that helps compare the distance. For the noun version of measure it can either mean a set unit so for example a way I would say litres is a set unit for volume is by saying, ‘Liter is the measure used for volume.’ It can also mean a plan that is taken for archiving a specific goal. For example, “To get more of a profit from the company, cost-cutting measures need to take place.’ a synonym for this can be an action or proceeding.

The next word, mature, is spelled as M-A-T-U-R-E. Mature can be used as an adjective as well as a verb. To use mature as a verb, it usually means when anyone reaches expected physical, mental, or emotional development. It can be used to describe someone's physical growth in terms of puberty and more or it can be used to describe their mental and emotional growth when dealing with certain situations and being thoughtful. An example of a sentence can be, “Girls usually mature faster than boys and start looking older than they are.’ This sentence is talking about the physical appearance or growth of girls. Another example can be, ‘Lily matured so much in the last six month, she is so much more poised.” This is talking about LIly’s emotional and mental growth. To use mature as an adjective means having reached the most advanced stage in a process. An example could be describing certain artworks, ‘Frida Kahlo’s portraits were mature.” This sentence means they were the most advanced they could have been.
