TRANSCRIPT:
Hello everyone, my name is Jasmine, and you are listening to the English ClAIRSTONE Podcast, where you can build the cornerstone of your English vocabulary! For all our new listeners, welcome to the community, and for our regulars, hello again! Before we start, I will remind you that we upload new episodes twice a week and there are transcripts for each podcast episode in English, Arabic, and Spanish at our website projectclair.org, so go check that out if you want to follow along!
Today we will look at the words “emotional” and “physical”
The adjective “emotional,” spelled E-M-O-T-I-O-N-A-L, comes from the word emotion. So, the word emotional describes intense feelings, or emotions. Often the word “emotional” can describe a person that is easily excited or feels emotions intensely so that they openly show them. An example of the adjective “emotional” describing a person is: “I am an emotional person, I always cry during movies.”
The word emotional (and emotion) are complex. It covers all feelings including anger, sadness, happiness, jealousy, and more. Like mentioned, it can be used to describe a person, but it can also describe things. Things like speeches, movies, books, and even music. Something that is “emotional” makes a person feel moved by their feelings from the thing that is “emotional.” An example of the word “emotional” used like this is: “The book The Fault in Our Stars is an emotional book; it made me cry at the end.”
The second word, “physical,” spelled P-H-Y-S-I-C-A-L, is both an adjective and a noun. As an adjective, “physical” is the opposite of emotional. Emotional relates to feelings, but “physical” relates to touch, things that can be seen or felt with sense other than the mind, or rather with senses like touch, smell, taste, hearing, and sight. An example of this is: “The plane that crash landed had physical damage on its wings.”
The adjective “physical,” beyond describing things that can be touched, describes things relating to the body. Something “physical” can describe a movement or contact of the body. For example, “The woman ducked under the hand to avoid physical contact with the other person.”
“Physical” as a noun, also has to do with the body. The noun “physical,” is a type of fitness test or exam that doctors and trainers use to measure and check a person’s bodily fitness. An example of the noun “physical” in a sentence is: “My school told me that before I started to play football again, I needed to take a physical at my doctor’s office.”
Well, that is it for today’s episode! This was the Clairstone Podcast, and for the full transcript for all our episodes, go to our website projectclair.org. I hope you will start to use the words “emotional” and “physical” in your English practice, and I will see you next time! Bye everyone!
