“All your nerve endings have to be alive to life .. you have to be prepared to plumb your own history and experiences that are often difficult. It’s just what it takes. The gold is about very raw authentic feelings, that’s the key to writing interestingly.. only then will the audience come on the ride with you.”

Renowned playwright novelist and screenwriter Joanna Murray Smith is described as the foremost “Australian playwright” with half of all Australian plays performed overseas being written by her.

Her plays including Honour, Rapture Bombshells, Nightfall Redemption, Love Child and Songs For Nobodies have been performed around the world in the US, the UK, Asia on Broadway the West End and at the Royal National Theatre in London.

Yet her greatest fear is that she will disappoint.

“I’m always terrified I will let down the actors, audiences or theatre company .. that’s my nightmare”

Many of her plays feature flawed, fiesty, fragile and ferocious women who cry, fly, fight even sing their way through life’s challenges.

Her play “Honour” was modelled on so many wise dignified women.
She knew beautiful mothers and wives who were left by their husbands and found themselves alone at 60 .. it explores their strength and also how much they’d been complicit in their own invisibility.

Her next play “Berlin” hopefully released soon at the MTC is her first play that explores Jewish themes. “It explores crazy infatuation of youth and forbidden love."
While researching she went to Auchwitz on her own to digest and process the horror of history and it was life changing.
Always a pleasure to speak to this vivacious, articulate and engaging writer-

So grab a tea, or a G & T and let’s get intimate
