Here are some tips to help you get started on your waxing on home:
Tip 1: Check hair length
If your hair is too short, the wax won’t hold it in place effectively. But if it’s too long, there’s a chance it will break above or below the skin’s surface, which can lead to the dreaded ingrown hair. The optimal length is 1 cm, recommended by waxing experts. If you have longer hair, be sure to cut it short before waxing.
Tip 2: Consider the type of wax
There are two types of wax available: soft wax and hard wax. Hard wax beads is best for the bikini area and underarms. Soft wax, on the other hand, can be used at lower temperatures and requires materials or strips to remove it. This wax works better on finer hair and is quicker to use on larger areas like legs.
Tip 3: Conduct patch testing
If there’s one thing you should always do before using any waxing kit, strips, or any type of wax, it’s to patch test 48 hours in advance to make sure your skin isn’t reacting – like if you were dyeing your hair or That’s what you do when trying a new skincare product.
What can help make the process smoother? Make sure the wax is at the right temperature before applying it to a small area. This will help avoid burns from waxing for an overall more comfortable experience.
Tip 4: Exfoliate before hair removal
Getting ready for waxing requires gentle exfoliation. Dead skin cells are removed and ingrown hairs are encouraged to come to the surface.
Warm Tips: Avoid using exfoliants in the bath or shower within 24 hours before physical hair removal. Exfoliating right before waxing can irritate the skin and cause skin sensitivity. The best time to do this is 24 to 48 hours in advance – this avoids skin irritation while minimizing the chance of dead skin building up again.
Tip 5: Prepare your skin for waxing
Similar to makeup, skin must be prepared before hair removal. The type of wax you choose can guide your pre-wax skin care regimen. With hot wax (or hard wax), it’s recommended to cleanse the skin first and then apply the oil – the oil creates a barrier between the skin and the wax, so the wax mainly grabs the hair.
But what about soft wax? When using hair removal wax (or soft wax), do the opposite and remove moisture from the skin’s surface by applying talc (after cleansing). While grabbing all those tiny little hairs, it will also exfoliate the top layer of dead skin cells.
Tip 6: Avoid Retinol
If you’re keen on learning how to wax your brows (or upper lip or any area of your face) at home, check your skincare routine before you start removing, as retinol and wax together are a no-no. What’s the best course of action? Take a break from using retinol and retinoids before and for about a week after waxing.
Tip 7: Choose the perfect product
If you want to wax the finer, shorter hair on your face, such as your upper lip or eyebrows, it’s best to look for products specifically formulated for that area. For areas like the legs, look for body wax strips designed to cover a larger surface area. Considering using pre-applied wax strips or wax pots?
Tip 8: Remove in the right direction
The biggest mistake is removing wax in the wrong direction. Wax should be applied in the direction of hair growth. Then take it out in the opposite direction while keeping the skin taut. The biggest motivation here? The better you stretch, the less pain you’ll experience.
