×In this special episode I’m joined by my friend, [Ben Brooks](https://brooksreview.net). (Throwback to the B&B Podcast days.) We talk about yesterday’s iPhone 7 event, including our first impressions of the new Apple Watch, the iPhone 7, the shift toward carrier upgrade and payment plans based, buttons, and more. **[Download here.](http://traffic.libsyn.com/shawntoday/shawntoday-2016-09-07_042617.mp3)** (56 Minutes)…
I received an email from a reader recently. In it he stated that one of his biggest challenges related to doing his best creative work is the fear that “it’s already been done before”. When you’ve got an idea for something, do you find yourself asking: “Hasn’t *SUCH-AND-SUCH* been done already?” If so, here’s the answer: Yes. Yes, it’s been done before. So what? Here’s why it doesn’t matter: 1. You have a unique perspective and story. 2. Who knows what the strategy, work ethic, and long-game plan is for your competition. If they go out of business next week, you’ll still be here. 3. There is not a one size fits all approach — and the way that you solve a problem may resonate better than the way someone else does. 4. Examples of things that had been done before: Fast food burger restaurants, cars, house floorpans, touchscreen smart phones, running shoes, fiction books, productivity books, coffee… Everything I’ve done in my career, I know of other people and other websites that had done it. I didn’t do anything that was completely original. I took an idea that resonated with me, and I put my own spin onto it. If I let the fact that this already exists hold me back then I’m discounting my own offering, I’m assuming the other person has already done it perfectly (they haven’t), and I’m also robbing my own audience. Did you know that people who buy productivity courses and books are far more likely to buy another one (and another, and another)? It’s not a zero-sum game. For The Focus Course, what I wanted to set it apart was the design. The website design was my competitive advantage. And also, I was building it directly for my audience. I wasn’t building it for the whole world — I was building it for just a few thousand people. ### Show Links * [Focus Course Launch Week Case Study](https://thefocuscourse.com/behind-the-scenes-six-figure-course-launch/) * You can download the Finding Creative Focus Worksheet on that case study page * [Focus Club](https://thefocuscourse.com/club/) * * * **[Download here.](http://traffic.libsyn.com/shawntoday/shawntoday-2016-07-11-this-has-been-done-before.mp3)** (18:49)…
Today I share some thoughts on the importance of taking 100-percent responsibility for our actions, behaviors, results, and situation in life. While there are times when things truly are out of our control, most of the time they’re not. And so, instead of “becoming the victim”, it’s critical that we move on, take ownership, and do something about it. **[Download here.](http://traffic.libsyn.com/shawntoday/shawntoday-2016-06-13-100-percent-ownership.mp3)** (07:33)…
On today’s show I share a little bit about the next product and training area I’m going to be focusing on. It’s still in the very early stages, and so I share the very rough, behind-the-scenes Here are a bunch of statements: * Follow your passion is bad advice * Talent is overrated * Find the sweet spot where passion, skill, and opportunity meet. * Deep work + time devoted to focus = quality * There is no guarantee of financial success or fame * You have to show up every day for 2-4 years * Success for a product isn’t in shipping, it’s in solving problems * The joy is in the journey If all of these are true, and they are not mutually exclusive, then how do we balance them? How do we get from where we are now to where we want to be, while navigate a million seemingly competing ideas and opportunities? * * * If you’ve got a business or side project of your own, listen to today’s episode. If you’re trying to gain traction with your thing, listen to today’s episode. If you’d like to make a few dollars doing something you love, listen to today’s episode. You’ll hear at the end I ask for your feedback. Where are you at right now? What’s the challenges you’re facing. Where are you going to figure things out? ** Shoot me an email ** and let me know. I’d love to hear from you and talk further. [Download Here.](http://traffic.libsyn.com/shawntoday/shawntoday-2016-06-10-creative-entrepreneur.mp3) (15:44)…
Here’s a clever trick for if you’re trying to incorporate a new habit or routine into your day-to-day life: anchor it. For me, I’ve begun taking Vitamin D on a daily basis. Except that I will forget to take it for weeks or months at a time. So, I put the bottle of my vitamin D pills right next to my coffee making gear. Now, every morning when I am making my coffee, my Vitamin D is right there in front of me. You could say it’s been “anchored” to another routine. Long-time listeners of the show will know just how much I love the “purity” of the “art” of charcoal. Well, I’ve decided to give my grill away because, honestly, I haven’t used it in nearly two years — ever since I bought a gas grill. In short, there are times in life where convenience and simplicity trump out over quality. (If this weren’t true, then McDonald’s wouldn’t have a business model.) For those of us who value quality above all else, it sometimes takes a bit of courage to be pragmatic and accepting of the more simple option. Today is a big day today over on The Focus Course. We’ve been hard at work for the past 5 months developing a whole new foundation for the site. While the changes we’re shipping today aren’t cosmetic — they’re to the back-end infrastructure of the site — they are significant, because they’re setting us up to do some awesome new things on the site. Let’s talk for a minute about business, entrepreneurship, leadership, and creativity. I just recently began re-reading *[The Lean Startup](http://www.amazon.com/dp/0307887898/ref=nosim&tag=shabla-20)* by Eric Ries. In it, Ries defines a startup as this: > A startup is a human institution designed to create a new product or service under conditions of extreme uncertainty. If you’ve read Frank Chimero’s fantastic book, *[The Shape of Design](http://www.shapeofdesignbook.com)*, you’ll know there are a metric ton of parallels and overlaps between startup entrepreneurs and designers-slash-creative-folks. Next, I listened to a [recent podcast episode](https://www.entreleadership.com/podcasts/145-dave-ramseyentreleadership-define) on the EntreLeadership podcast… In the podcast episode, Dave Ramsey shares what his [definition of an EntreLeader](https://www.entreleadership.com/solutions/videos/entreleadership-defined) is. Which — surprise surprise — is someone who has the qualities of both an entrepreneur and a leader: * Someone has entrepreneurial characteristics: being comfortable with risk, having tenacity, vision, and a genuine desire to provide value to others and make the world a little bit better. * Combined with someone who has leadership characteristics: integrity, focus, diligence, discipline, servant-hearted. And so — and stick with me on this — do you see just how much overlap there is between artists and creative folks and entrepreneurs? **Artists and entrepreneurs alike are both those who aim to live with diligence and focus in order to take a risk to create something new under conditions of uncertainty.** This person says things like: *“I have no idea what I’m doing.”* Or, my favorite: *“This might not work.”* This person also cares deeply about doing their best work. #### And so, here are Three “P”s that will help: 1. **Persistence:** Do you have the tenacity and discipline to show up every day? 2. **Place / Platform:** Do you have an outlet for showing your work, shipping your product, and/or showcasing your art? 3. **People:** This is multi-directional: Who are you providing value to? Who are you learning from? Who are you working with? * * * Starting tomorrow, and over the coming weeks, I plan to unpack these Three Ps. Both here on the podcast and also on my weekly email [newsletter](https://shawnblanc.net/newsletter). On today’s show I share about how getting my family’s financial budget in order helped open the door for better management of my time and also healthier eating and exercise. It’s the idea that, when you have at least one area of your life that is disciplined and healthy, it acts as an anchor to help get and/or keep the other areas of your life disciplined and healthy as well. Contrast that against having no discipline or healthy goals for any areas of your life. Someone like that is likely to be a person whose family life is tense, their finances are probably in disarray (in debt, living beyond their means), they’re likely not challenged at their job nor doing their best work, and their physical health is surely hurting as well. On today’s show: If you could be somebody else for one year, who would you be? And secondly, what’s the advantage of “switching” with someone else’s life rather than (a) studying their life and their work, or (b) having the opportunity to interview them?
