Growing up in a military family, Tristen Epps moved around a lot. But no matter where he was living, Friday nights were sacred. He got to dress up, go to a restaurant, not order from a kids menu, and feel like he was getting to know the place he was living — for now. At home, when his mom taught him to scramble an egg, he was mesmerized by the alchemy; one simple ingredient could transform into so many things. It's that wonder and curiosity that transformed him into the leader, visionary, and Top Chef winner he is today. He joined Tinfoil Swans at the Food & Wine Classic in Aspen to talk about his mission to “un-colonize colonized food,” the freedom he feels cooking in Air Jordans, why it's important to him to celebrate oxtails with Michelin-level finesse, and his belief that cooking has power to correct history. Three men talking about God with all their human wisedom
In this edition of the Three Semi-Wisemen podcast, we are looking at the life of Joseph. His life is filled abandonment, enslavement, and imprisonment, but ultimately God used to save a nation. And all this because of his continual encounter with dreams. Today we will delve into the subject of dreams. Does God still speak to us through dreams today? What wisdom can we extract from the bible in regards to dreams? And as always, we want to glean the treasure trove of God’s self-revelation through Joseph’s life. Download Subscribe…
In today’s podcast we’re moving on to the next characters in the line of Hero’s in the Hall of Faith, Isaac and Jacob. As always, we discover so much about the attributes and nature of God. Some of the tough questions that Jacob’s story draws out are: Why did Jacob, the younger son and a deceiver, receive Isaac’s blessing? What does this tell us about God’s character? and should we, like Jacob, wrestle with God? Download Subscribe…
In this podcast, we will be examining the life of Abraham. He stands out as a pivotal character as God sets him apart as the Father of the entire nation of Israel. We ask some probing questions about his righteousness and the covenant that God established with him. And as always, we want to compare these things with Jesus. Jesus brought a new covenant, and gives us, as his followers, a righteousness that is similar, yet very different from that of Abraham. Finally, we want to look at the parallels that Abraham’s relationship with his son, Isaac, shows us about God relationship with Jesus. Download Subscribe…
We’re continuing our series on Characters of the Old Testament. Jesus and Peter make some rather interesting statements that relate Noah to New Testament Christians that we want to delve into and then answer some questions that are presented straight from the story itself such as, why did God flood the earth in the days of Noah and then promise to never do it again? If you want some random facts about the Noah story that are quite interesting, this post at The Gospel Coalition outlines 9 of them: http://thegospelcoalition.org/blogs/tgc/2014/03/27/9-things-you-should-know-about-the-story-of-noah/ Join in the discussion. Post comments, constructive criticism, and help us go deeper into the lives of these Old Testament characters. Download Subscribe…
Today we are starting a new series titled: Characters of the Old Testament. We believe that everything in the Old Testament is leading up to Christ death and everything the New Testament is a result of Christ’s death and resurrection. Our podcast has focused a lot on the New Testament and so we are going to switch gears and look into the stories of the Old Testament. They are packed with, not just symbolism, but also a great picture of who God is and his character. In this episode we ask and attempt to answer: How can we see Christ in the stories of Adam and Cain and Abel? Why is Jesus called the second Adam? and how does the idea of sacrifice compare between the story of Cain and Abel and of Christ? Join in the discussion. Post comments, constructive criticism, and help us go deeper into the lives of these Old Testament characters. Download Subscribe…
This is our final podcast on our Kingdom of God series. We have talked about the King of this Kingdom, who we are as the citizens, and who the enemy Kingdom is. Today we are completing this series by discussing the mission of God’s Kingdom. What is it? What do we have at our disposal to accomplish this mission and how specifically does the Holy Spirit assist us as we advance the mission? Join in the discussion. Post comments, constructive criticism, and help us go deeper into these theological issues. Download Subscribe…
Who is God’s enemy? Satan would be an obvious and correct answer, but is there more than just that? We delve into what it means to be an enemy of God, what the weapons of the enemy are, how much power the enemy has and what we as Christians have to defend against and attack this enemy of God’s kingdom. It’s a very important reality that Christians need to grasp and we want to make sure we get this right. Join in the discussion. How can one be a citizen of the Kingdom of God and be a citizen of the world? The reality is, being a citizen of the God’s Kingdom affects every area of our lives. Not only is our allegiance to our country changed, but so is our allegiance to everything else in the world that can command our obedience. We want to tackle all of that. And to complete our discussion on this topic we need to ask what our roles are in the Kingdom of God. Feel free to comment, critique our arguments, or ask more probing questions in the comments section below. Download Subscribe…
Jesus is King! Foundational to Christianity is that we have accepted Jesus as Lord of our lives, which means that we have taken ourselves off the throne, and given it over to Jesus. He now rules and reigns. Often though, we have forgotten this: in order to surrender and live for him, we have to know him. We need to know what he is like, what his authority looks like, what he has done, what is his will, what he wants from us. Without this knowledge, our faith is directionless and ultimately fruitless. So today we want to talk about our King Jesus. Download Subscribe…
What is the Kingdom of God? It gets thrown around a lot in Christian circles these days. Jesus preached about it often. Do we really know what it means though. This is the start of a mini-series on the Kingdom of God and taking an in depth look at what the bible says about it. It isn’t as straight forward as one might think. Enjoy. Download Subscribe…
Grace is truly an spectacular thing. God has given it so abundantly and freely that we can go our entire lives without exhausting it. Often I wonder how much I understand it though. With this podcast, I feel like we might actually get it and yet I know the full extent of his grace has yet to be revealed. Download Subscribe…
http://hischarisisenough.wordpress.com/ One of the most common analogies for the Christian life, is that of a race. How we run that race is important. It requires training and preparation. Then once you start, it takes commitment, and perseverance to make it to the end to receive a glorious prize that is far better than anything this world can reward you with. Are you ready to run it with us? Download Subscribe…
The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. We can somewhat related with those terms to describe the each part of God. Say Trinity and now it sounds a little intimidating. That is deep theological stuff for the bible school students and scholars. We don’t believe that only the really smart people can understand the Trinity, but each of us should have a basic idea of how the Trinity works. How can three individual persons be one and the same God? We hope this podcast can help lower the barrier and give some understanding to this perceived scary concept. Download Subscribe…
Ever tried to memorize scripture? If not, why not? We believe memorizing scripture can be a really important discipline in the life of a Christian. In fact, here’s an entire podcast based on it. Why is it important? How can it affect your life? How does a person go about memorizing scripture? And we end with a few examples of scripture that we believe would be very helpful for a Christian to memorize. Enjoy. Download Subscribe…
Image from: http://liftjesuscross.wordpress.com 1 Cor 15:3 “For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins…that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures.” This is what defines Christianity and sets it a part from every other religion in the world. Today’s podcast is going to ask the what, why, and how’s of the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. Our goal, to attempt to explain some questions people have about the gospel. “Praying for God’s will” is the topic of this weeks podcast. “God, will you…?” It’s not necessarily important what comes next when we bring our requests to God. The intent behind your request is. Is it God-centered or self-centered? Is it in the will of God or is it outside the will of God? How do you even know?? If you have any thoughts, questions, or constructive criticism, feel free to comment below. Would love to hear from you. Download Subscribe…
Clearly we don’t become completely new creatures when we accept Christ as our Lord and Savour, but I thought using this title would make a good excuse to use this rather well done interpretation of a Kangaroowalrusphant. Couldn’t have done better myself. Anyway, even though we aren’t new and improved creatures that can fly or have super human strength, we are new creations. It’s a change so deep and life-changing that no visibly, physical changes can do this transformation justice. So for this podcast we wanted to discuss what exactly those changes are and how they affect our lives – attitudes, actions, desires, etc. Download Subscribe…
Good , because the church has played such a huge role in giving people hope, reaching out to the poor, the broken and hurting. Bad , because it’s full of messed up people who often make mistakes, act hypocritically, judge intensely, say the wrong thing, do the wrong thing, and the list goes on. Holy , because God has set apart the church, along with each messed up sinner that makes it up. He has called the Church his family, his body, and his bride. It’s because of this that so much good has come from the bad. Download Subscribe…
The voice of God. For being so vital to the Christian life, it’s possibly one of the least sought after things. God wants to hear from us and he wants to speak to us and answer our prayers. In this week’s podcast we wanted to bring some clarity to hearing God at the individual level, corporate level, and some tips on giving a possible specific word from God to someone else. Each parable is immensely impactful and each could probably be a entire discussion unto themselves, but we’ve decided to tackle a bunch of them getting important tidbits from each and in the end a greater appreciation for the communication style that represents much of Jesus’ preaching. Our latest podcast is up. The questions we tried to answer this week: What the purpose of the universe? Why were we created? These questions could have as many answers as their are people in the world. Luckily, Christians are fairly united in their understanding of the answer that the bible presents us with. Yet Christians sometimes aren’t clear what the answer is so hopefully our discussion can shed some light on that. Hint: it is not 42. Download Subscribe…
This may be the most difficult topic we have discussed yet. It requires that many underlying assumptions be addressed before we can even answer this main question properly such as, do we even have free will? What would it look like if we did? What influences are involved in directing our will? Does influence in our lives mean we lack free will? And so many more questions that make this topic so challenging. Download Subscribe…
Forgiveness can be a challenge, but God’s amazing demonstration of forgiveness towards us can powerfully affect our ability to forgive others. We wanted to tackle this topic despite none of us having to forgive someone for any terrible offences. This is a huge part of God’s character and us reflecting that character so join us as we dive into what forgiveness means and looks like in our lives. Download Subscribe…
How can God demand perfection (Matt 5:48; 1 Peter 1:15-16) despite making it clear that no one has ever been perfect or comes close to being perfect (Romans 2:9-20)? Why are we not perfect? Can we attain this level of perfection? These are important questions for Christians to understand. Our goal in this week’s podcast is to dive into the Word to find answers. Download Subscribe…
Join us in our very first podcast as we discuss the questions: Does, and how does God punish people for their sins? Does God just punish them in the afterlife or also during their life? Does he punish just the non-Christian or just the Christian or both? Download Subscribe
