Season 1, Episode 6: Early Women In Construction
Manage episode 289039229 series 2905014
In honor of Women's History Month, I put together a slide show of a handful of women who were early pioneers in construction. The video has been loaded to YouTube: https://youtu.be/y5QgKC3sUW4 My choice to research these women stemmed from an overheard discussion where a man was challenging a woman and claimed that there were no women contributors to the creation of modern society. The woman could not respond with some women's names. Knowledge yields such power. The early women I researched include: Zaha Hadid, Solveig Erikstad, Edith Clarke, Lillian Ann Baumbach-Jacobs, Deanna Dunlevy, and Josephine Striano. I also found the first union female carpenter, back in 1935, Margaret Ellings. I discovered Dawn Gladwin as Ikea's first female, from UK & Ireland, carpenter. I also read about a group of women tradeswomen who worked on Altit Fort that sits in Hunza Valley in Pakistan back in 2003-2009. The leader of the non-profit group Ciqum is Aqueel Bano as well as the first female carpenter Amina Bibi who came from the Ciqum group. I hope to carve out time for next year's 2022 Women's History Month to honor and showcase even more women. All of these women made history with their contributions to the construction industry throughout the globe.
