Oh say can you AC? One heat happy New Yorker chose one of Summer 2024’s sweatiest days to fan up a heated debate over the merits and necessity of apartment air conditioning. The fresh air freak wound up triggering a BTU brouhaha by announcing their dislike of the seasonal window-killer on Reddit’s popular Ask NYC message board.

In the headlines on #TheUpdate this Tuesday, in our continuing coverage of the death of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, a man suspected in the brazen Manhattan killing of him was arrested and charged with murder after a quick-thinking McDonald’s customer in Pennsylvania recognized him from a surveillance photo and police officers found a gun, mask and writings linking him to the ambush.

Elsewhere, at the Daniel Penny trial, a Marine veteran who used a chokehold on an agitated subway rider was acquitted in a death that became a prism for differing views about public safety, valor and vigilantism. And in the American west, firefighters battled a wildfire in Malibu that prompted evacuations near Pepperdine University, where students sheltering at the school’s library watched as the fire intensified and the sky turn deep red.

Hello everyone! We're going into #TheUpdate vault to play one of our many episodes throughout our many years of the show. For today's episode, we go into the world of 2020- or as we call it around here, Year 4 of The Update. It was a weird year- starting off in the WKRB studios and then going out on the road (in the middle of a pandemic no less!), but somehow, we found a way to make it work. Oh, and one last thing about this episode- after the show aired, one of my former producers who happened to be listening to the show called me up and invited me out to lunch. How about that?…

It was a sex crack-er-down. People are shocked to discover the sex-fueled history of graham crackers as the salacious backstory resurfaces online. Sharing a simple summary of the story, another added: “Just discovered Graham Crackers were invented by a Presbyterian minister to cure licentiousness. A lot of y’all need to start eating Graham Crackers.” In the headlines on #TheUpdate this Thursday, ten people were wounded in a shooting outside a New York City nightclub while they were waiting to get into a private event, police said. Law enforcement officers searched the home of a former top New York City police official who resigned late last month after being accused of demanding sex from a subordinate in exchange for opportunities to earn extra pay. And it seems that America is on edge. A U.S. Army veteran- Shamsud-Din Jabbar, 42- who drove a pickup truck into a crowd of New Year’s revelers in New Orleans, killing 15 people, had posted videos to social media hours before the carnage saying he was inspired by the Islamic State group and expressing a desire to kill, the president said. Meanwhile, firework mortars and camp fuel canisters were found stuffed into the back of the Tesla Cybertruck that exploded outside President-elect Donald Trump’s Las Vegas hotel, killing a suspect inside the vehicle and sparking an intense investigation into possible terrorism.…

The forecast for Dry January is looking very wet. The trend among the sober-curious in the Big Apple has seemingly dried up — with New Yorkers calling the once-hip phenomenon “stupid.” In the headlines on #TheUpdate this Wednesday, the suspect who drove a vehicle at high speed into a crowd of revelers in New Orleans on New Year’s Day was killed after a firefight with police, law enforcement officials told the AP. Ten people were killed and 30 were injured after the suspect rammed a vehicle at high speed into a crowd of pedestrians in New Orleans’ bustling French Quarter district at 3:15 a.m. along Bourbon Street. Locally, you can’t rain on their ball drop. Thunderstorms didn’t dampen the spirits in Times Square on New Year’s Eve as thousands of revelers rang in 2025 with a bang. And U.S. stock markets will remain closed on Jan. 9 in honor of former President Jimmy Carter, continuing a long-held Wall Street tradition in mourning the nation’s leaders.…

There are plenty of secrets and hacks when it comes to air travel, but one that’s lesser known is aircraft trading cards. While some travel enthusiasts have been collecting them for years, others are just now finding out about trading cards from social media posts that have gone viral. In the headlines on #TheUpdate this Tuesday, The crystal-covered ball that descends down a pole in Times Square to ring in the new year was taken for a test run, as New York City officials laid out their plans for the iconic New Year’s Eve event. A political war on the Hudson erupted Monday over New York Gov. Kathy Hochul and the MTA’s controversial $9 congestion toll. The MTA can begin collecting the first-in-the-nation congestion fee to enter Manhattan south of 60th Street on Jan. 5 — following a federal judge’s ruling in Newark. And in the American west in Los Angeles, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have reached a divorce settlement, ending one of the longest and most contentious divorces in Hollywood history but not every legal issue between the two.…

Being a pilot has its perks — but it might cost you. Beards are barred on most major airlines, meaning pilots may have to abandon their signature scruffy look when reporting to the cockpit. While it isn’t an official policy enforced by the Federal Aviation Administration, a spokesperson told Thrillist that the facial hair may impact safety. In the headlines on #TheUpdate this Monday, Jimmy Carter, the peanut farmer who won the presidency in the wake of the Watergate scandal and Vietnam War, endured humbling defeat after one tumultuous term and then redefined life after the White House as a global humanitarian, has died. He was 100 years old. And elsewhere, newly released video of a fatal New York prison beating shows correctional officers repeatedly pummeling a handcuffed man, striking him in the chest with a shoe, and lifting him by the neck and dropping him.…

Size does matter. That’s at least when it comes to flying, where every inch between your seat and the seat in front of you counts for a lot. The pros at UpgradedPoints.com crunched the numbers, looking for the average amount of stretch-out space on the 10 busiest domestic flight routes. In the headlines on #TheUpdate this Friday, a taxi driver whose car hit six pedestrians when he jumped a curb in a Manhattan shopping district on Christmas Day was having a medical episode at the time, according to the NYPD. In New Jersey, a mammoth sinkhole opened along a major interstate, closing several lanes and pushing motorists onto local roads to avoid the pit. And in our continuing coverage in the death of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, most Americans believe health insurance profits and coverage denials share responsibility for the killing of UnitedHealthcare’s CEO — although not as much as the person who pulled the trigger, according to a new poll.…

Can you dig it? Archeologists in Spain have recently uncovered an ancient rock slab with an alphabet inscribed that predates the Rosetta Stone by roughly 400 years. In the headlines on #TheUpdate this Thursday, a taxicab hit six pedestrians in midtown Manhattan on Christmas Day, police said, with three people — including a 9-year-old boy — transported to hospitals for their injuries. The man accused of burning a woman to death inside the F train used a shirt to fan the flames, a prosecutor said Tuesday at his arraignment on murder charges. And hang onto those stocking-stuffer lottery tickets. The Mega Millions jackpot has surpassed $1 billion after no ticket matched all six numbers drawn on Christmas Eve. That means the estimated jackpot for Friday’s drawing is $1.15 billion, potentially the fifth-largest jackpot in the game’s history.…

A woman dubbed the “world’s hottest” scientist has shared her diagnosis of a potentially “deadly” mosquito-borne disease. In a video on Instagram, ecologist Rosie Moore told her 192,000 followers she had contracted dengue fever while traveling in South America. In the headlines on #TheUpdate this Monday, the NYPD announced they have in custody a “person of interest” in the early morning death of a woman who they believe may have fallen asleep on a stationary subway train before being intentionally lit on fire by a man she didn’t know. Speaking of the NYPD, the highest-ranking uniformed officer abruptly resigned late Friday night after explosive allegations were uncovered that he demanded sexual favors from a subordinate in exchange for massive amounts of overtime. And in the transition from Joe Biden to Donald Trump, he suggested that his new administration could try to regain control of the Panama Canal that the United States “foolishly” ceded to its Central American ally, contending that shippers are charged “ridiculous” fees to pass through the vital transportation channel linking the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.…

That’s not gonna fly. Along with a surge in post-Covid air travel has also come an unwanted and continuous spat of bad behavior in the skies and airports — we’re looking at you, Crazy Plane Lady. Here are some unrecommended behaviors that can result in having your wings clipped. In the headlines on #TheUpdate this Friday, we continue our coverage in the death of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. The man accused of killing him was whisked back to New York by plane and helicopter to face new federal charges of stalking and murder, which could bring the death penalty if he’s convicted. Elsewhere, Mayor Adams' former chief adviser, her son and two real estate investors were indicted on bribery and conspiracy charges that came as the mayor himself fights a separate corruption case. And in Washington, a day before a potential government shutdown, the House resoundingly rejected President-elect Donald Trump’s new plan to fund operations and suspend the debt ceiling, as Democrats and dozens of Republicans refused to accommodate his sudden demands.…

First, do no parm. Let’s face it — we love our classic Italian-American restaurants for their complete lack of restraint. No judgments, of course, but let’s say you were trying to shed a few pounds for summer — you don’t have to refuse the next offer of dinner at your favorite red sauce local, the experts say. You just have to look at the menu in a new way — and follow a whole new set of rules according to dietitians Melissa Rifkin and Kelsey Hampton Abdullah, writing for Eat This, Not That! In the headlines on #TheUpdate this Thursday, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters said workers at seven Amazon facilities will begin a strike, an effort by the union to pressure the e-commerce company for a labor agreement during a key shopping period. A former top aide to Mayor Adams is expected in court to face corruption charges in the latest blow to an administration beset by searches, resignations and the mayor’s own indictment. And in Washington, President-elect Donald Trump delivered a likely death blow to bipartisan congressional budget negotiations, rejecting the measure as full of giveaways to Democrats after billionaire ally Elon Musk whipped up outrage toward the bill and cheered on Republican lawmakers who announced their opposition.…
