Climate activists say a new report detailing high levels of methane emissions should encourage state and federal government to take swift action.

Data from the Climate Council shows the global methane level is at its highest in about 800 thousand years - and Australia is one of the largest contributors.

Agriculture, the fossil fuel industry and waste are the main drivers of Australia's methane emissions.

Rural Reporter Emily Minney spoke with Report Author Professor Lesley Hughes, who says the report is not an attack on the agriculture sector.
