Have you felt traumatised by the end of a marriage or other significant relationship? You are not alone. It can be hard to believe that you could ever be happy again, let alone that the best might yet be to come.
Many people have found it helpful to attend a course run over two consecutive weekends by the Divorce Recovery Workshop, aimed at helping people make sense of their feelings, understand and let go of the past and set the foundations for a brighter future.
Thirty years after the first Divorce Recovery Workshop was held near Maidenhead, the national charity now runs courses in various locations around the country. In this podcast we hear from Seamus Jennings, one of the volunteers running the workshop in Earley, Berkshire.
He explains how the course is based on a model of mutual support and self help, consisting of a series of video presentations addressing different themes, each followed by a group discussion facilitated by volunteers who have previously been through the course themselves.
The workshop helps people understand what they are going through, provides support from others in similar situations and helps people adjust to their new status. It is complementary to any professional help or other support that may be in place, such as legal advice or formal counselling. The emphasis is on recovery: not just going through but growing through the experience, learning about oneself and preparing the way for a happier future relationship.
