It's been a few weeks of learning and reflecting.
The tragic, horrible, death of George Floyd has lead to protests. Not only in the USA, but across the world.Including Canada. Image after image.
The topics of systemic racism has been at the forefront. And while, some wanted to say this isjust a "USA problem", it's becoming quite clear that it is also a problem, a big problem in Canada.
Our guests today will explain how this has impacted them.
Yes, there are friends of mine.
Ki Nya-She is from Kenya She immigrated to Canada 15 years ago. Ki Nya-She is from Kenya She immigrated to Canada 10 years ago. She is a social worker. She is also an inclusion strategist and educator with my consulting firm, Shades of Humanity.
Brigid-(Bree) Bree lives in Surrey and is Nigerian by birth. She is a graduate of the BCIT Radio Arts and Entertainment Diploma program. Brigid works in the sustainable energy program as a communications person.
Hugh-His background is Jamician. He is a Student Advisor at SAIT in Calgary. He has two sons that are mixed race.
Topics we cover include;
White fragility-Systemic racism,
White supremacy- The subtle ways it happens in Canada
“All Lives Matter vs Black Lives Matter. Why the term All Lives Matter is deeply hurtful.
The anger at what has happened in the USA vs The silence as to what is going on in Canada.
Allyship vs Accomplices. What are they?
Learning and unlearning cultural differences.
Will the majority of people who are standing with people of color still be there after the police who killed George Floyd are found guilty? Or, will it feel like "it's over".
